  1. Tried out for Manchester United as a kid and also represented Tasmania in Junior cricket in case you didn’t hear the commentary every single time he lined up for goal.

  7. Watching the last two minutes of Melbourne v North highlights on the AFL website with the Yze news showcasing "Yze and Neitz blitz." brought a tear to my eye. For a number of reasons: A reminder of how good Yze and Neitz were. How many good players we had in the team at the time. (Why didn't we win a flag ?) Seeing Troy Broadbridge holding the ball aloft when the siren sounded. RIP Troy. Great news. The Albanian cheer squad will be back in force at the MCG. (We hope. If restrictions allow.?)

  9. Have been asking for a Football Director on the Board for over two years. Last time we had one was Greg Healy. The club finally acknowledging a lack of football experience on the Board. Great appointment in concept and Green in the role.

  12. This might be unpopular but having followed Brad on Twitter I don’t observe a smart analytical mind at work. Apart from the time he put Saty in his place. Then again, the Hawks seemed to do just fine with Kennett in charge.

  13. Yawn. Goodwin is the head coach. Yze is an assistant. I think it is likely he will take on some of the match day strategy/analyst role that Craig Jennings had, but we havn't since filled. With the reduced soft cap, he may take an active role in skills as well. “I’m really excited to be back at the Club but more importantly, I’m excited to be working alongside Goody (Simon Goodwin) and the coaching staff,” he told Melbourne Media. “Goody and I have got a strong connection and I see us as a really good fit together." What evidence do you have that Goodwin doesn't listen to the team around him?

  16. Polec no go. Nothing heard about Merrett. Smith a very good chance to be a Demon. Brown a chance, but not a big one yet - Price is reasonable, but injuries a barrier. Don't know we'll do much other than Smith tbh. We apparently just don't have the wriggle room atm.

  17. From his profile on the Hawthorn website: Adem Yze - Head of Match Day Strategy & Opposition Yze was promoted to Assistant Coach at the end of 2014 after establishing himself as a respected teacher at Hawthorn. Originally, Yze joined the Hawks at the end of 2011 as a specialist coach, working particularly with the forwards on their goal-kicking before being appointed as a Development Coach at the end of 2013. Basically his specialties (kicking skills, kicking for goal, match day strategy) are our weaknesses. Fantastic get.

  18. Elegt, too many of your posts are couched in absolutes. i.e referring to Tom Mc Donald as a 'disgrace to the jumper'....just to name one. There have been others. Here's my take. People make mistakes. And it's possible to make mistakes and still be 'a top bloke'. These things are not mutually exclusive. I'd argue that it's fluid for all of us. There's a trend on social media to damn people for all eternity for real and perceived indiscretions. You appear to have embraced this 'cancel culture' and run with it here on Demonland. That's your right of course, it's a forum. But it's (for mine) joyless. And, at it's heart, lazy.

  19. Cal Twomey on AFL's footy feed today reporting that Melbourne are very very interested in Ben Brown. For what it's worth, Cal's word around these sorts of things is very reliable so I'd expect a high level of truth in that. Would imagine some stronger links may be made once our salary cap is roughly determined for next year after the new club soft cap, list sizes and further delisitings and salary dumps of ANB/Oscar are announced and done. Would be good to have an in principle deal done soon with Brown to ensure he wants to come.

  20. Richmond over Saints, though I'd be delighted if this went the other way. Geelong vs Collingwood? This is like being given the choice of dying from either Ebola or dysentery.

  23. Yes. At last we have an assistant who has completed the formal qualifications and has a lot of coaching experience, in a successful club. He is more qualified than the rest of our 4-5 person coaching panel put together. (Have excluded Goodwin for that comparison).

  31. Agree Steve. What i like about this appointment is that he does bring 10 years of coaching experience, a dozen flags and success. He like Gary Pert know what it takes to be a successful club. I know for a fact he had a fantastic relationship with the Hawks players and they loved him. Don't underestimate how big of a loss this is for the Hawks just like when Fagan left them.

  35. True. English has struggled and seems years off having a proper AFL big man body. Pruess and future first rounder? I'd do it in a heartbeat. Hunter is elite.

  37. There's interest and we're still trying to find a deal, but his salary is the sticking point.

  38. We're interested in Brown, but several things need to happen for a trade to happen. Salary cap is our main enemy at the moment. We were hoping to get TMac off the books, as apparently we're tight and need to free up some cash in the coming years to hold onto our elite core of Oliver, Trac etc. If we can fit Brown in, we're keen and have enquired already.

  39. I just reckon when you look at our board, having a 250 game, former captain (also captained Int. rule FWIW), Bluey winner, Barassi Award winner in there is pretty handy given we're a footy club. https://www.melbournefc.com.au/club/board

  40. Don't take me too much as gospel, this is just what I've heard. I won't repeat the specific wording used about Polec, but what was passed on to me was that he wasn't really a desirable personality. Lots of things still up in the air this time of year, there's been media rumours/talk about all of Jones, ANB, OMac, TMac, Jetta and more not being with us next year, so the cap situation could change, especially if there's a surprise trade request none of us saw coming. My opinion is that we know we need forward help, but there's just not much around in our price range currently. Club rates Petty highly apparently, so it's not the end of the world, but also not ideal.

  41. Biden is the candidate because of who he's running against. The Democratic primary was all about who was most likely to beat Trump and it's clearly Biden. Biden is the least offensive candidate to moderates and seniors who don't want a progressive reformist (like Sanders) but also can't stand Trump. Those on the left will vote for Biden anyway because the alternative is Trump, but the ones in the middle need to be motivated to vote. Plus old people vote a lot more reliably than young people, so a candidate that appeals to them is going to be really important (especially in places like Florida). It's also important when looking at the Senate races, which is probably where most of the Democrat resources will go now that Biden's strong lead looks stable.

  45. Agree wholeheartedly with Ungarie Boy. Some Posters : Use possessions as their criteria under rate the opponents especially for the defenders , do not take into account what /and how the ball is coming down to your zone/opponent. So many people have criticised OMac for Membrey's mark . There was nothing he/or 90% of AFL defenders could have done. Once a bloke gets 3 yards in front and the ball is delivered in the right place all you can do is hope !! A lot of criticism of players really does go beyond the pale. They are all young men with different attributes who are playing their hardest. That does not mean they are insipid/mentally retarded/ absolute S#$$$@ etc whic is routinely leveled via some contributors. The Mc Donalds ( and I am not related or have met them) were both No 51 draft picks , and neither came to the club with reputations like TRac, Clarrie etc so they have been very good team players for MFC . They have been a credit to have played as much AFL as they have and would not have done it without massive personal efforts. So....lay off the personal insults !!!

  49. Tom's right! Many supporters seem to think that unless a player is elite, then they must be junk and fair game for abuse (not being relevant). No team has won a premiership comprising only A grader's (supported by elite) look at our very own Stephen Armstrong as a Weagle premiership player. There's even a Morton who won a premiership. Oscar performs admirably and as strange as it seems I am more relaxed with him kicking than most of our other talls (he's safe, despite others like May being better kicks). Many seem to base a lot of their opinion on his early output when he was thrown into a struggling team, as a KPP, while very young (and not fully developed). As a coach I do not just see the numbers as performance. I currently have an inside midfielder who doesn't wrack the big numbers expected of the role (which others in the team could do better), but when he plays in the midfield we never lose it and rarely is a goal scored against us (they predominantly happen on his rotations). I seem to recall Omac coming into the team this year which equated to May and Lever performance lifting to new levels, which they then maintained ' making Omacs role less of a need; but would they have gotten to that point without the confidence gained from Omacs inclusion. This is not say he cannot be traded, it's just an observation that he does have value, he is a contributor, and can form part of a premiership team. Ironically calls for him being traded is actually recognition that he can play such a role (for someone)!
