Agreed. I don't get the hate for Oscar on here. He's just turned 24 and holds down a key defensive spot. Him being in the side allows Lever and May to focus on intercept marking. Rather than worry about the opposition forwards I think team structure is the most important. That's how Richmond have become so good. Playing the same guys week in week out no matter who they are up against. For what it is worth, David Astbury was much maligned early in his career and has now become a solid lock down defender. Oscar reminds me a lot of him at the same age so we can only hope he can get to a similar level.11 points

Assuming he's selected, Neville Jetta will play his 150th game in round 2. Massive shame there won't be a crowd to show our level of appreciation and love for the great man. The Demon Army are currently considering different ways to celebrate him leading up to the game and perhaps on game day as well, so just thought I'd open it up here to ideas and perhaps even a bit of love for him to be shared. One idea kicking around is to have a mini-banner at training (bit like the one Gawny organized for Trenners a few years back) made up of comments from fans celebrating him, like a reverse of the 'mean tweets' banner. Fan numbers would be limited at training (if any are allowed at all) so would be a way to get fan sentiment across to a much loved Dee. Anyways, feel free to chuck some ideas in here Demonlanders.10 points

Jeez tough crowd! I hope Goodwin sticks it up all you doubters just to see the Olympic level backpedalling on here by the so called "supporters" of this club. You're all damaged goods.6 points

They'll have McGovern and Casboult in there as well Oscar beat Darling hands down. He will play. You need to continue to reward good form. May is also capable on playing on small's and mediums as well.6 points

Utter madness, (and not the ska music kind) Tmac is a machine with his cardio fitness and size. He also prospered under every coach, is not a sook, and had one tough season for injury. Hardest player to replace.4 points

What is wrong with ANB competitiveness and hardness? Mock all you want about his horrid decision making, but no way does he take a backward step. Goodwin loves because of his competitiveness and toughness. Billy Stretch was pretty much a free pick. Costs us absolutely nothing. He was stiff to be delisted last year. We kept Josh Wagner and delisted this bloke who would have been good depth for the wing spot. In that same year we picked up a bloke called Aaron Vandenberg and Mitch White. Vandenberg is an animal and White was also a tough nut. There was a theme there.3 points

Well, I’m glad Richardson is impressed. That makes one. Game-style and selection will be telling, has the monotone robot lost the ego?3 points

A few years back, after the great R Flower passed, I made the call that we should call the members wing of the MCG the Robbie Flower Wing. It is now unofficially the Robbie Flower Wing for our home games (I'll take credit for this!). While I'm not at all suggesting that Nev is or should be held in such company as Robbie, he's a player that I feel every Melbourne supporter loves. And let's face it, he does a bloody lot for the club, our indigenous boys and in the community. No harm in having the (unofficial) Jetta Pocket located up the Ponsford Stand end on the members side.3 points

I really hope Harmes is still rotated heavily through the middle. Still not happy with him playing down back.3 points

Considering it’s less than a week before a game and it’s coming in to cold/flu season, I’d prefer it if we sent a Wagner down the slide into the ice water.3 points

No he doesn't. This is his biggest weakness. He is pretty soft for a guy with his frame. Tries to play that floating 3rd tall instead of being the top dog up forward. I'd much rather take the risk on Daniher then Wright. At least Daniher is proven A grader when fully fit.2 points

Can @Lord Nev’s thread, which is here to celebrate Jetta, his milestone and all his hard work to get there, not be turned into a political [censored] measuring contest?2 points

Hibbered is extremely poor as a one on one defender. I think we will start to see him phased out in the manner that Bernie Vince was. I would not be surprised if Joel Smith is highly considered. With his speed and power, he could play a role on either Jack Martin or McGoven. It's obvious the coaching staff rate him highly internally and want to get games into him. I also think Marty Hore will find it really hard to break in this year unless injury to Lever.2 points

I can definitely confirm that the Melbourne recruiting staff and Paul Roos were not fans at all of Peter Wright in his draft year. The theme of their recruitment style that year was kids who had competitive physical instincts. Peter Wright biggest knock was that for a big lump of a lad, he is quiet "soft" and doesn't provide much physical presence around the contest. I don't think much has changed since.⅝2 points

How disappointing that we're not the first club listed when they talk about MCG tenants. The MCG is our home, the others are just squatters. (***enter @Sir Why You Little for comment...!!!***)2 points

They got the crowd noise so wrong tonight. If it had been a Broncos crowd there would have been dead silence. Forced laughter came to mind.1 point

'Cal', I would prefer Melbourne seek out 2 Metrix Peter @the Suns, well over and above, Joey Daniher... for next year; or for 2022_? Even if it costs us TMc, and OMc, to get it done. Maybe Ben Ainsworth could be added into that mix.?1 point

Sure I envision the team being: In: Weid, Vanders, Smith, Bennell, Jones, Salem. Out: Brown, Spargo, Hibberd, ANB, Lockhart and Bedford. Jetta May Lever Salem OMac Smith Langdon Viney Tomlinson Melksham TMac Harmes Bennell Weid Fritch Gawn Oliver Petracca Jones, Kozi, Brayshaw, Vanders Coaches want Harmes in the backline but I think you get the athleticism and rebound through Smith. Rolling through the midfield you can put: Viney, Oliver, Petracca, Brayshaw, Harmes, Salem, Bennell, Vanders, Jones and Melksham. In the podcast Inside Melbourne, they seem to be floating the possibility of taking OMac out for Smith and sounds like they are looking at Lockhart as coming into the back line. In that case I would put Jones on to start and Lockhart starting off the bench. Probably a better side actually, better rebounding side anyway.1 point

Sounds like there is some chance that Kossie, Bedford, Jackson, Rivers and Bennell all may play. quite like the idea of Bennell, Kossie and Bedford all buzzing around the forward line with TMac, Jackson and Melksham1 point
-
nah, that's consistent forward line pressure i can completely understand why anb holds his spot despite his woeful disposal - he runs all day and works hard defensively, something that few in our side seem to be capable of doing consistently1 point

Even All Australian careers come to an end. Hibberd had an average season in 2019 and his first game this year wasn't good. As for Rivers, well we can only go on training reports as there will be no VFL this year...but his last game against North in pre season was very good. He may not get up for the first game back but he is at least putting the pressure on a few of the senior players and should be ahead of Wagner and Hore for a call up.1 point

Troy Chaplin very bullish on Lockhart and Rivers in the latest official podcast1 point

I’m not sure it really matters... where does the money come from? I don’t know what sort of money he’s on, but where does the $1 million + come from to pay him out? How do we then pay a new coach? Would the AFL give us further assistance if we’re throwing that sort of money away? As is said, I see contracts being honoured as very few clubs will be able to pay anyone out. FWIW I still believe Goody will be a very good AFL coach and we’ll perform well this year, so for me, it’s a moot point.1 point

It’s one thing to bring the knives out, it’s another thing altogether to pay out 2.5 years of his contract in this current financial climate. Id say anyone with a contract is very, very safe to the foreseeable time-being.1 point

Such an exciting time... if we lose however I'll be wishing for a second wave of corona infections, so we all go into lockdown and they shut down the season again. Absolutely 0 excuses to lose this one. They have key injuries, we appear to have almost a full list to pick from. If we are serious about making amends for the disaster that was 2019, we absolutely cannot lose to Carlton.1 point

I can see why you chose your screen name... are you talking about the coach who got us to a preliminary final in his first full season? Sure they failed miserably last year, but I'd be holding off on the crucifixion a little longer; and the first game of this year was lost in the first quarter after which they adjusted but were not good enough to overhaul what they had already given away. And have you noticed that the new "improved" Carlton have a rather extensive injury list that includes two of their main forward targets, while we are pretty much at full strength (something we were nowhere near in the first round).1 point
