  1. Great idea. Give a guest who is giving up his time to the fans for free a grilling as if you’re frigging A Current Affair. If you want the podcast to be unable to attract guests in the future, this would be a good place to start. This is a good opportunity to get him to clarify things that aren’t clear or explain the process in making the decisions, but levelling the questions as accusations from an ignorant position would just make us look like morons.

  3. Garlett is a gun. Just had a poor season this year. Don’t give up on him folks. Not yet at least.

  5. Hmm, not sure about Corey. Apparently a lovely bloke, but I'm not convinced on his footballing abilities. His kicking in particular. But with Tyson going, he's a cheap back up, so smart decision by the FD.

  6. I think to further expand on that question, I'd like to know how far in advance they start making enquiries about a player. For example, I think we said that we had been monitoring May for a little while, so at what stage did they circle 2018 as the year to attack? This could explain why sometimes they don't bring future picks in to the equation, as they are planning on making a play for someone else that following year. Hope that makes sense!

  7. Oscar is a little bit taller and surer than Frost. He's less prone to a brain fade. He plays more to his limitations. Steven May has many of the attacking attributes of Frost. Frost stood up at the end of the year, but in choosing a collective six for 2019 I see Oscar's skillset as more complementary.

  9. More than anything this is saying we want 6 main list spots and 2 rookie spots. 7 and 1 was always going to be hard to fill. 4 draft picks that we rate on 2 year deals. 2 rookie draftee pick ups on 1 year deals if it doesn't work out. 2 more list spots to fill some other way. I like Maynard as a depth option. Excellent size, really good athleticism and hard at it. Moving him to the main list is recognition for his professionalism and in some ways an incentive to get back, play some good footy and stick with us. Will have to improve his kicking and feel for the game to be a long term player but I think he'll be handy next year and in the short/medium term even if he doesn't.

  10. A few things because one size doesn't fit all and not everything is black and white. The signs were there against the Hawks that we were starting to look fatigued Don't underestimate how much the previous back to back 4 must win elimination games we had effected our players emotionally. We were on a knifes edge coming in against the Eagles. They should have been done week 1 at home against the Pies and without the week off Kennedy would have been in trouble, but somehow they dug out a win. Good luck to them they hung in and the Pies ran out of legs In the prelim we started nervously and bang it was almost gone. Players come out after quarter time in their shells and bang bang two quick goals and that is it, the mountain is to high and we were officially cooked. We had the weaknesses down back going in which were magnified by us getting smashed at the clearances allowing them easy delivery. I like our game style it stands up but needs some tweaks and some greater outside polish. We saw in the later part of the season much improved delivery inside 50 and cohesion moving forward in waves with quick ball movement. Not finishing top 4 cost us dearly, I honestly believe with the build up and emotion we brought into week 1 of the finals that we would have beaten any side in front of us, but we shall never know The ball moves quicker than any player will and you never look slow controlling the game. Take the prelim out of it and I seen a lot to be pleased with and a lot, which I have seen in previous contenders just before they hit their straps. Lewis has been great for us as was Bernie but the baton started to be passed this season with many of the younger players becoming on field leaders and taking the game by the neck. I expect Lewis will be depth come mid 2019 and when we get the 80-100game mark into our nucleus we will see flexibility in our side, we will have the combative game style but we will see players controlling and taking the sting out of games regularly. The biggest hurdle we face next season is for the player group to not believe in natural progression, if we do we will be caught out. We were the hunted in the Prelim and didn't deal with it. We must work hard from the outset, set standards in workrate, preparation, discipline and hardness. We have the cattle, we have the gamestyle and are so close now but nothing comes easy no matter how good you are

  11. Daniel Menzel has elite talent, no question. Jack Watts has elite talent also, as does Jeff Garlett. What none of them have is ability or desire to apply the forward pressure required in today's game. In Menzel's case, he may never have had it, I don't know, but four knee reconstructions mounts a case as to why he may not have enough confidence in his knees to do it. Ex- Geelong players at our club, Matthew Egan, Max Rooke, maybe even Shannon Byrnes and Brendan McCartney may know him well enough to know. Simon Goodwin has a game plan very much built around forward pressure. Jack Watts is gone, Garlett is teetering and yet both have more talent than say the likes of vandenBerg, coming off a longterm injury and Spargo, a kid who doesn't yet get enough off the ball, who while deficient in some areas, perform the non-negotiables of tackling and applying pressure. If a player in the 22 doesn't perform these non-negotiables, then the fabric of the team starts to fray at this one seam and then the rest can begin to rip and has to be patched as Watts and Garlett have found out the hard way. I have much respect for Daniel Menzel's elite talents and admire how he has been able to resurrect his career, however I don't think he fits what we are trying to build and would send a wrong message to the rest of the list. Having seen him interviewed, as a person he comes across as likeable, humble and grateful to those who have supported him on his journey and I really hope he finds an AFL lifeline somewhere.

  12. Not just Neeld, it was a top to bottom problem. The whole organisation was rotten.

  13. I just watched the interview with Steven May on the club’s website. He is already a favourite of mine. I never heard Jesse express that type of enthusiasm or excitement about the club. I found it super refreshing to hear it from May though. Hogan will be a very good player for Freo, but I’m very happy we have May now. I expect he’ll become a club legend. The Dees secured a cracking trade result here.

  14. Frost was good on Hawkins in the Elimination final, the times that Hawkins marked it were classic lapses by other players failing to fill the hole directly between Hawkins and the kicker. No KPD could've stopped that - it's another illustration of how up field pressure and positioning is key to defensive success.

  15. Wow. The star pulling power that Demonland has is impressive. I noticed that Maxy also gave Demonland a bit of a shout out in his B&F speach. That these players and officials of standing keep rocking up to give interviews is a real credit to the manner in which the moderators and administrators at Demonland run the forum. Well done guys.

  16. His last pre season was excellent, hence the Rd 1 spot, was developing nicely, as Mahoney said, but crueled by the hip injury Last time I spoke to him, was way ahead where they expected him to be in rehab As other topics show, you don't have to be a superstar if you have the attributes Goody wants and you play your role

  17. Defensive pressure is not actually our issue, being one of the leading pressure teams in the comp. What we lack, Gaff would offer, which is accurate disposal and lots of them. Still, I hope KK can live up to his pick 5 selection in terms of talent and he'd end up being a much cheaper and younger option than Gaff. This highlights to me how overrated Kent is too.

  18. From first hand experience (he coached my son for 3 years during his re-hab) he is a quality person who would add to our improving culture. Was outcast by Scott who plays favourites with his team. Is an elite user of the ball, strong overhead and a very accurate set kick. Watch the last 2 minutes of the Geelong game at GMHBA and see who set that play up that broke our collective hearts. Attached are some interesting comparative stats for those that dismiss Menzel and bag Garlett. I am biased because I know him but a lot of Geelong people are shaking their heads in dis-belief.

  20. The 2018 prelim saw two clearly different teams match up against each other: traditional KPPs vs a dynamic contested possession focussed game style. I for one believe in the contested game style, my question is: do we need to acknowledge the eagles game, or do we back ourselves into 2019 with our existing blueprint? the new 6-6-6 rule may have influence...

  21. At least the brains trust at AFL haven't slotted a team to play in Alice Springs in the middle of summer at 5pm, and off a 6 day break like they did to us last year. Probably cost us a spot on the ladder in the end, and probably a GF position. 9.35pm for Adelaide v Freo, in Darwin is half sensible, but why a game needs to be played there at all is beyond me.

  25. Is he staying at the Dees beyond 2019? He apparently applied for the role as CEO only to be pipped by Pert. I've heard JM was PJ's choice. Given that, I'd be interested to know how Mahoney, Pert and the Board are getting along. Mahoney is one of the most important components of our success as a football club. I'd like him to be with us for the next 3 years at least
    2 points
  26. I don't think so. I think the teams they play twice will be 3 in their 6 based on ladder positions, 1 in each of the other two groups of 6, with a showdown guaranteed against Port. Last years the teams Adelaide played twice were Port, Richmond, Melbourne, Carlton, and the Giants. They'll play Port twice and double up against 2 of Geelong, Sydney, North, and Essendon in 2019. They'll double up against one of the top 6 and have requested Hawthorn, Collingwood, and Richmond before us...

  28. It might be a slightly sensitive question to ask of Josh, given he was somewhat touted for the top job, but I'd genuinely be interested to know how things are settling in under new CEO Gary Pert. Has been a pretty low key transition and not without some frenzied media style controversy, but we shouldn't walk on eggs shells forever and I think it's time that the MFC members and suporters get in behind Gary a bit more and give him our suport as we drive towards the ultimate sucess.

  29. I would suggest that the synergy of linking Hames with Harmes should be a marketing opportunity made in heaven. Would it be appropriate to ask contestants at the quarter time break to do something with their r's?

  30. Oh wow, nice get. Lots of topics you could ask Josh about: 1) how he made the transition from coach (Bailey brought him here as an assistant) to administrator - I recall him saying at one stage he didn’t enjoy coaching as he thought he would or words to that effect. 2) A bit of his time as a player. He was a battler/journeyman type as a player. 3) Some general background on what happens in trade week - are some clubs as hard to deal with as they seem and can that be an obstruction to getting deals done? 4) some specifics from this trade week - did the club have a view that Jesse going was inevitable eventually? How long had we been courting May?

  31. Oscar needs to develop some mongrel. Forwards need to earn their kicks. Brown, Kennedy, Cox, Hawkins etc. were far too physical for him. Frost has Xfactor with dashing runs and torps. Did a good job when he came in. Should have been in much, much earlier. Fritta definitely plays round one!

  32. I don't get what's so hard. See that other bloke, your opponent, who has the ball? Go and try get it back off him. Do so successfully and both you and your team will kick more goals - hurrah! Are the elite athletes and competitors who actually reach the AFL and don't apply pressure just lazy or arrogant, or incapable of doing so in terms of their defensive capacity? Is it systems-based - can it be taught? If I was given the choice of extending my sporting career on a quarter of a million dollars per year, on the proviso that I made an effort to chase after some guys for a couple of hours twenty-odd times a year, or going into real estate, I know what option would appeal. Surely Menzel on these terms is worth a punt. Put in and you probably play, don't and you can fade away in the football boondocks. We need to back in our our systems if we're to convince everyone else we believe in them. Note: please don't cite Jack Watts if you choose to respond to this post.

  33. Not too sure of the date (around 2010) I decided to play at Royal Pines on the Gold Coast. Had paid and was waiting to join a group when the pro came up and said let them go and I have put you with the next group. No problems as the Japanese group left and I joined up with the next group. Well I was really happy ( I was wearing a MFC logo shirt) as he joined me up with Jeff White. What a day. By god he could hit a ball.

  34. I think binman was comparing Omac and May at the same age. Frost had 222.85m gained per game versus Omacs 200m so not too different. Omac had 2.08 turnovers per game versus Frost 3.08. Frost 2.77 score involvements versus Omac at 1.84. They are close. Different strengths and weaknesses.

  35. Can you ask him if we even factored in Lever's ACL history when we asked for a trade with Adelaide last year, given that we overpaid so much, it would be interesting to know that a) Mahoney even knew about it, and b) whether it came up in negotiations with Adelaide. Cheers.

  38. He's a tease at the minute. I suspect there would have been some stern words as to where he needs to get to next year and what shape he needs to come back in. I believe Fritsch, ANB and OMac scored better in the B&F from a points per games played view. Needs to own accelerating his improvement or be left in the dust of Oliver, Brayshaw and Harmes.

  44. I’ll predict through necessity he’ll play high up at the ground at CHF where he rarely had the poor body language and play very well. Just like he did in years 1+2 here. In fact Lobb at FF suits him as a partner more than any Melbourne forward did. I’ll predict he averages 20 touches, 8 marks, 2 goals but doesn’t really make Freo all that much better because even though a lead up CHF is nice it’s only required if your team doesn’t move the ball quickly and accurately enough to produce flowing direct passages of play.

  45. Strongly disagree that the numbers show that. The numbers show that most of the elite key position players explode in season 3 or 4. Jesse has continued at a similar level since his initial season. His numbers I would imagine are similar to Jack Darlings. Goals in 4th season: Riewoldt 78 Roughead 75 Walker 63 Cameron 63 He is a good player, but he isn't close to the player some on these boards talked him up as from season one.

  47. Goodness me Macca, Withhold beat home 33 runners two starts ago and that run was in October last year. A field of 34 in a flat race? It’s common for the steeples, can’t say i have ever seen a field of that size on the flat. Withhold is 33rd in the ballot for the Melbourne Cup and $15 to win it.

  49. Sorry, but I don't understand where you are comming from with either of these statements. Jessy's performance for a guy of his age would be top 5% in the league for a key forward. He had practically one season out of 4 or 5 where he had a stuffed back and a dog of a year last year (but still played 10 games). Asides from that he has played around 20 out of 22 games per season. Personally I'm just disappointed that he isn't performing for us in it as both he and the team hit peak maturity and performance.
