Half speculative, half rubbish. Pedo retired, timing was right, gave us nothing when he came to the senior side. Loved Pedo at the club but it was time. Vince retired, also right timing, can't have Vince and Lewis in the same side. Those goals he missed in the VFL grand final were a sign. He would have nailed them under a heap of pressure in his prime. Also loved Vince at the club! Balic retired. Should Mahoney sit him down and say "no son, you have to play" Kent trade, huge gamble offering him a 3 year deal with his injuries, we don't want to be the barstard club that tries to make him stay on a 1 year deal. Do the best for your family Kenty! He kicked a beauty against WC but it was a full team effort that won us that game, and if you want to highlight 1 player from that win it was Melksham. Tyson speculative, we don't know any specific's yet. Hogan also speculative, we don't know if the club hasn't offered him 2, 4, and 6 year deals and said weigh that up with your offer from freo and give us an answer before trade period. Which is the club doing what best for Melbourne in my opinion. King and Flipper couldn't get a game in the VFL and we are bringing in Preuss. That's a win Bugg, it was time to go. Mckenna, we may never know. But everything else is spot on. At this stage I'm calling TOP job FD. Then let's wait and see how things pan out.19 points

The puzzling things about the advocates for only pick 5 from Fremantle is the idea that Hogan has somehow gone down in value since he was drafted. Picks 3 and 14 for Hogan, Dom Barry and Pick 20. Hogan has gone on to win the rising Star Award and kick 152 goals from 71 games. With the draft still a lottery, surely Hogan's value has increased over the past 6 years...15 points

Fremantle have come out now and said they're not accepting pick 4 for Lachie Neale as he is still contracted. Yet is happy to show Hogan around their facilities while contracted.. Hypocrisy at its finest.. Bunch of fuckwots14 points

My take is that May wants the Dees, but can't show his hand until Hogan confirms he's seeking a trade to Freo. We'll know nothing about May's intentions until we know Hogan's.11 points

It's 2018 and we've just come off a prelim final loss. Our time is now. Look at the different phases our list has gone through since 2013, a year in which we finished second bottom with a percentage of 54. We've built through the draft and have an abundance of talent now who are all hitting the 50+ game mark together. We culled what we needed to during those dark years and at the same time needed to pick up some mature stop-gap players who are now being pushed out of our side. Whilst unfortunate for the individuals, these signs are nothing but positives for our club. Players like Tyson, Kent, Bugg and Pedo have all been serviceable during our rebuild. Tyson even had a better than serviceable year as an inside mid but our younger talent have developed and pushed him out. Again, a positive outcome. Just trust the FD. Look at the position we're in. How can you be worried? We're in need of some specific improvement to make those couple of last steps which means losing a few along the way. No biggie if we want that flag.10 points

1. He's terrified of the Eagles mascot. But he thinks the Freo mascot seems like a top bloke. 2. At West Coast, they laugh at people who smoke cigarettes. That's what your grandparents smoke. 3. He can't convince the Eagles' players that he's not actually an "east coast guy". 4. He's hoping at Freo, they'll let him drive a real ship.9 points

The epic meltdown in the proceeding few pages based entirely on the events in one poster's imagination has really spiced this thread up.8 points

I disagree on Melbourne's desire. In my view it's crystal clear that Melbourne are driving this. They could easily quash any talk of a trade, but it feels like to me the Dees are almost encouraging Hogan to explore his options. They've decided May is the missing piece that could secure a flag in 2019, they rate McDonald and Weideman as a forward combination, and think they can get adequate compensation from Freo. Just my take, but I think Melbourne are more 60-70% in their desire to do a deal on Hogan.8 points

It is understandable that Freo would want to have a presence at the top of this draft, just to sell hope and paint the picture that a rebuild is actually happening. I've muttered it before but I'm becoming more confident about it, I think Freo's 2019 first pick (plus this year's 5ish) makes sense as a fair way to flip a coin on whether it is two very high picks for Hogan or one very high and one fairly high. And I like the idea of letting Jason Taylor have at least some shot in the first half of the draft each year. This could get dizzy - because we 'May' end up trading our own 2019 first pick while retaining the one Freo gives us. Anyway, I think it has been 500 posts on this htread since I last contributed so I figured I'd just throw some randomness in to celebrate how useful the thread has been.6 points

I’ve posted previously that McClure on trade radio is essentially baiting and trolling for a reaction. I would be tempted to call up and suggest that we look at trading Bugg + T Smith + Tyson + Garlett to Carlton for Cripps and a second rounder for a taste of his own medicine.6 points

Sam McClure just said it matters more how freo value hogan than ya in terms of a trade... no sam, if I want to buy your car I also don’t get to set the value. Jesse is contracted and we are entitled to set the price required to Break it6 points

Apart from Hogan I don’t see any of the players you mentioned as a huge loss. Pedersen was pretty awful in every game he played this year and I wouldn’t expect improvement in 2019 at age 31-32. T Smith can cover Pedo easily. Vince was similarly finished this year and lost his place in the team because we couldn’t carry both he and Lewis. I liked the physicality that vandenBerg brought late in the season but he can butcher it and with any form drop off he could easily be playing VFL (he’s in the bottom 6 or so players in the team). Tyson got pushed out of his natural inside role because we have players with more tricks and versatility. I like Kent but he is made of sticky tape and the fact he is so inconsistent is another reason he couldn’t find a regular spot in the 22. TL:DR - I’d like to keep Hogan but we will be compensated. Pedo and Vince were past it at AFL level. vandenBerg, Tyson and Kent will likely leave for personal reasons or opportunities we can not afford them. As nice as it would be to have a VFL team full of AFL standard players. Players won’t stay if they can get an AFL gig elsewhere. I’ll back Taylor, Mahoney and co to get us the best net outcome. I also like the fact that we’re not satisfied with finishing fourth in an even year and seem willing to turnover the list to maximise our window.6 points

Yeah, but the two aren't mutually exclusive. In my view, the club is driving this because Hogan has refused to extend past next year. I wouldn't be surprised if we'd all initially put off contract talks until the year of the season. Once we lost to WC over in Perth, our list management team sat down with Hogan and his reps, and asked him whether he'd extend. When he refused, we encouraged him to explore his options.5 points

Goodwin was pretty strong that he wanted Hogan to stay when he was On the Couch recently. Goodwin may have changed his mind since then, but it may also be that Hogan doesn't want to extend his contract and we are trying to make the most of it by being open to trading him this year.5 points

Next number depends on how many goals Jeff Garlett kicks in 2019. Hopefully lots! The sequence = the number of goals he has scored per season since 20115 points

Who the feck would voluntarily go to GC? Plenty of Vic clubs who could use him. He really is not a bad player, he just can’t play his best position at Melbourne. Will go play inside mid somewhere else and be very good. He could be Carlton’s second best inside mid and free Cripps up a bit.5 points

Absolute gun. Silk, class and also an unbelievable mark for his height. I dont want him in defense though, plays his best footy up forward and up on a wing.4 points

I recall a pie fan saying petracca wasnt worth much and looking up his stats to compare. Tracc was on the same development curve as jordan de goey until late this year minus a good goal avg. Its just that JDG has stepped up a gear this season and in finals due to his pace and ability to nail his opportunities in front of goal. Petracca otherwise is pretty elite for his age, he'll only get better. He's judged pretty harshly due to his draft number and because he's a hybrid mid/fwd which will take time to really find his niche . He's a different beast to gus and doesnt have it so easily with the gawn taps like gus does.4 points
