  1. It was one of the better days at Casey today, light wind, good conditions and a lot of MFC on display. Here are my observations of the Demons: Kent: He was clean, fast, kicked well, dangerous and clearly better than the opposition and most of his teammates. He covered a lot of ground and looked strong and determined. He played a very good 4 quarter game and would certainly have put his name forward. He looked well ahead of Hannan for a spot in the 22. Hannan: He was pretty good. He played midfield and forward and found a bit of the ball. He made a few mistakes by foot but he has speed and a great sidestep. He had quiet patches during the game and struggles put 4 quarters together but he displayed the skills we know he has. My observation with Hannan today is he lacks the leg strength to break or stand up in a tackle so it's easy for the opposition to hinder him when he has the ball. A number of times he won the clearance at the centre bounce only to have a fairly innocuous tackle laid which either knocks him over or knows him badly off balance. As a result, he's not very effective as other than an outside player. Brayshaw: Unlike others, I thought he was very good today. He started in the centre and got leather poisoning early and used it well most of the time. He is strong around the ball and tackles hard. He played forward for a lot of the game and kicked a few and gave a few off. He was spent at the end but never stopped presenting and creating. I wish he was in the team tomorrow and is just waiting for an opportunity. Spargo: Started forward and was busy early and had an opportunity to goal which he unfortunately missed. Had a quiet second quarter but was moved on to the ball in the third and got involved around the ground. He's quick without being really quick (if you know what I mean) and he's clean with the ball. He is very aware of teammates and continually looks to do something with the ball. His disposal is good and he has clean hands. He's small, think Caleb Daniel, but there is a lot to like. A good hit out but a fair way down the pecking order. Frost: Best game I've seen him play. He marked really strongly, ran and broke lines, kicked very well and was clean. He monstered his opponent and was clearly our best defender but there wasn't a lot of pressure on. This kid has attributes and is still learning the game but if he had to play tomorrow you'd be pretty relaxed on today's form. Excellent performance. JKH: Was pretty good doing what we know he can do at this level. He played a lot as a high half forward and linked up well and won his fair share of the ball but given the type of player he is he misses too many opportunities at goal and often doesn't hurt with his disposal. He's showing signs as a classic 'tweener and he'd be behind a lot of players for a spot I'd think. Weideman: Played as a forward target and was on the end of some good passes and kicked some good goals. Found a fair bit of the ball. He appears to me to have bulked up a lot from the last time he played, still nicely agile but his upper body looked a lot bigger to me. Most interestingly he played a fair bit in the ruck and did very well, winning a number of centre bounce taps and finding his target. He was also very involved around the ground and used the ball well. If he keeps this form up he'll push to take Peddo's spot but one wonders how Hogan, McDonald and Weideman fit in the one forward line. It was a very encouraging performance especially seeing he missed a lot of preseason. Balic: Was fantastic early when he came on. He has great vision and found the ball well and often. He's quite a big body and won a fair bit of contested ball and his kicking was pretty good. He's got clean hands and always looks to do something with the ball. He's not quick at all but seems to have the ability to find a bit of space when he needs it. I was impressed and would think he'll play at some stage this year. Baker: Started on fire as most of the team did running hard playing wing and half forward (if those positions exist anymore). He is quick, has very good hands but is prone to the occasional "blunder". His field kicking was pretty good, he knew where to go to get the ball and he goes 100%. He's a good size and clearly has X factor and is well worth a spot on the list. King: Won the ruck comfortably, looks nicely coordinated, kicks well and took a nice grab in the goal square in the third. It was a solid effort without being in any was spectacular. Petty: I’m pretty excited by this guy. He reads the play very well, is a good mark and has clean hands and good vision and he executes his kicks very well. Was part of a solid back group and will develop into a good footballer I’d think. He didn’t get that many opportunities given the game but hardly put a foot wrong. Johnstone: Didn’t see him much at all until the last quarter where he was involved a bit. On today's performance he’d be behind any number of players for a spot but he works hard, can kick it well when he gets it and pressures the opposition. Smith: This kid is so athletic and has a great physique it’s hard to think he’s not a key position player. He didn’t do a lot and in racing parlance will be better for the run but he did some good cameo’s and was noticeable when he got it. It’s hard to believe he won’t make it when you see him run around the footy field but he does need to get involved a bit more. Smith: Played well, very well at times. Got to the right places, kicked for goal beautifully, worked hard, very clean in the air and clearly favourite amongst the players. My issue with Bull is he doesn’t get involved when the ball hits the ground as much as he should. He does the 1%ers but just being part of the play is not his strong suit (in contrast to Weid who was involved in general play a lot around the ground.). But it was a good game. Keilty: Had very little to do but did what he had to do well. Frost seemed to hog the ball when it did go into our defence but Dec competed well and I doubt his opponent did anything much. Filipovic: Looked likely at times. Kicked a great goal from a fair way out and competed well in the ruck. He’s clearly third ruck in line but he showed enough athleticism and footy smarts to think given a fair bit of time he’ll be a useful ruckman. In writing this keep in mind I don’t have an eye for the defensive side of the game so a player I think has done very well might have played his role poorly. Also the opposition was poor. At times they had a go but really it was a bit like watching the first quarter of the MFC v Saints JLT game. We played well and dominated and in those circumstances it’s hard to know if the domination is us or them but I was impressed by the general skill level, the commitment and particularly the cohesion of the team play.

  2. Final score: Casey 21.18.144 Frankston 5.3.33 Goals: Kent 4, Weideman 3, Hannan 2, Scott 2, T.Smith 2, Lefau 2, King 2, Brayshaw 1, Kennedy-Harris 1, Filipovic 1, Dwyer 1. Thought Frost and Kent were outstanding. Brayshaw tried hard and did some sublime things. Petty, Baker & Spargo all showed promise.

  4. Happy for Bugg. Honestly feel like he is one of our most underrated players. Guy works his ass off, gives lip and is always in the right places. If we win a premiership mark my words he will be in the team.

  5. Casey 121 v Frankston 32 at 3/4 time. Weideman very good that quarter. Spargo a good spell on the ball. Bull Smith excellent and 2 goals (maybe 3). Brayshaw continues to rack them up. Kent and Frost good. Frankston not much good but our skills look impressive.

  6. Oh, and bad news for Old Dee. Weideman looks good. Playing ruck a bit and getting involved around the ground.

  7. OMac is a better defender than Frost, it's just that some people have invested so much in to bagging him that they'll never see it.

  9. Name a young player we’ve ruined by playing in the 2’s for too long in the last decade? Always the opposite. At training Gus has shown flashes of good Footy but has always regularly made bad turnovers and hasnt shown a lot of zip. He’s missed a lot of games with injuries the last two years. A couple of weeks or even a month or so in the twos won’t hurt him

  14. Went down the road for a look. It is hard to guage our performances due to the fact that Frankston were shizenhausen. Brayshaw looked uninterested but played okay. Frost was good at half back and was short passing the ball alot. Hannan was average. Kent good in the second half. The weed looked good today. Did some ruck work as well. Baker looked okay but has to learn to control the ball better. Spargo looks lively but is small. King looks like he can do a bit in the forward line on top of rucking. There wasn't a bad player actually but as i said the opposition were no good.

  15. When I was picking my best 22 just prior to the season starting I had Brayshaw on my bench and Vince out. If I had to put Vince in it would have been Brayshaw coming out. In other words he's close but around the 20-24 mark. I expect that to change over the next year or so and for him to become a staple in the team.

  22. Currently playing in the Casey practice match and dominating. Very strange he isn't in the team again this week. Hopefully he is straight in next week. He gets nothing out of playing at Casey, he's been a level above VFL from before he was drafted. It's a waste of his time, and a waste of the clubs time. He needs a consistent run at AFL level to develop and become the player we think he can. He's an obvious talent (pick 3), and is also quite flexible. Can play inside or outside mid, wing, half forward, half back. His skills are decent, he reads the play well, and he lays a good hard tackle. If we don't give him games this year, he'll walk and become a star at another club.

  23. Raining goals out Casey way in the 3rd Qtr. Dean Kent has been brilliant kicking a great set-shot as our lead is out to 60 points, 92-32 Kennedy-Harris kicks a perfect through ball that ends with Mykelti Lefau scoring from a set-shot, 99-32 Tim Smith quickly adds another, 105-32 Lachlan Flipovic scores from 40m out, 111-32 Tim Smith does the team thing kicking over to Mitch King who converts ! 117-32

  25. If the AFL ran international cricket ... Demetriou would have called Lehmann and Smith telling them they were about to be nailed Bancroft would have been made to swallow the sandpaper There would be no charge of ball tampering. The whole thing would be put down to governance failures Smith would be sent to France for a year on a management study course Lehmann would score a gig with a management consultancy firm Warner would spend a year in New York learning to be a barista Smith would eventually present the Alan Border medal Everything would be the fault of the media. The players would all be brave, hard done by, Some numpty would sue the ICC

  26. Not sure why you have that attitude DAG 99% of what I have read is just discussing our shortfalls and attributes. The split is reasonable even. If you only want to read glowing reports about the MFC go to the MFC site. This is a fan site where people give their opinions and quite often they vary. And to your last comment. No Thank You.

  27. Cloudy, warm ,humid with showers up here in Brissie today and also expect the same tomorrow. Even if no showers the humidity will make for a greasy ball. Finally after a few years looking forward to seeing the Dees live and expect a good win.

  28. Changes make sense. Tyson replacing Maynard is no surprise. One of the non-pressuring forwards had to go and it was Hannan. We don't need him and Fritsch in the same side and Hannan didn't do enough last week to warrant keeping his spot. What Bugg did last year was a dog act. But he's done his time for it. I actually think this is a good opportunity to get him in. I'm not sure if the wider AFL community cares any more but, in case they do, we'll be totally off Broadway with this game, no one will be watching/listening other than Melbourne and Brisbane fans. Take any pressure off and get him back into the side. Let's hope he's learnt his lesson and he's worked hard. His pressure last year was important and he is a strong two-way runner, which we sorely lacked last week.

  30. Buggy is there to run around annoying the crap out of Zorko and Beams so they spend their whole time trying to smack him and forget about the footy. He’s our master of psychological warfare we are way better with him doing what he does best.

  31. Lost by one kick to one of the weakest sides Geelong will field all year, plus they lost a key player early. I am filthy at the thought of those who state this was a gallant/brave loss. This was a matter of not being good enough to beat a weakened team on our home ground after an off-season of talking tough and saying how we’ll rebound after a pathetic end to last season. If you lose a game you should’ve won, that is a bad loss.

  38. Haha I 100% agree. Not safe money at all. Not quoting you anymore @Petraccattack I just quoted you because we as supporters have had to enjoy 'dark' humor to get through a lot of seasons. But I firmly believe we need to change our mindset. We are not an elite team but we are a much much better team. It's a long season and the start is always frantic (upsets and fast paced footy). This Dees team is playing some good footy, I for one am pledging to drop the negativity for the first few rounds

  39. Both captain and coach took full responsibility, even though it seems the key offender was Warner. But as leaders they recognise that with the prestige of their positions and the big bucks, comes ultimate responsibility for both good and bad. Yes what a stark contrast to Hird. Steve Smith (and Bancroft) will be welcomed back, in large, by the Australian public with open arms after serving suspension. Redemption and forgiveness will be theirs. I wonder through hird’s iron clad ego, if he reflects on how things could have been.

  40. Lehman has done the right thing in stepping down as coach. It's a pity Hird didn't do the same and accept responsibility for what happened on his watch. This whole business would have been done and dusted long ago if he had.

  41. Good result for us. Good to see more top sides droping points so early in the season. Soothes some of the sting from our loss to Geelong. The game against Brisbane is a must win to keep us on track.

  42. He had a calf strain pre-season, he had to prove his fitness off that. It was mentioned that he wasn't ready. one extra week for the calf, to be sure, to be sure.. Calf injury can take time to heal. If he redid it, he could be out for a while. We don't want that with Viney out for another 6+ weeks. I'm wondering IF with the issues Brayshaw had, they may want to have him in tip-top match form, before he gets another senior game. Also he has to prove he's ready,,, again. Teeth or no teeth, he has to keep the head out of the way, and stay on his feet as it were. If not its bit of a worry.

  44. Can you believe what coaches and FD say about why a player gets or does not get a game? Last week Tyson did not get a game because he had an interrupted pre season and had not had enough game time. Then one week later he is in the side without playing one minute in between. How does that work? They tell us what seems to work at the time. Forget logic that seldom gets a run.
