  1. New game plan. Get Hunt to take the kick in with the wind behind him and just have shots at goal. If the wind is anything like it is here it will travel 200m!!

  2. Cold and already breezy in Hobart this morning. Sky is dull and gloomy ......... a bit like my head after a solid night out. I fear that the weather forecast for the afternoon might be on the money, despite Nasher's confidence to the contrary in another thread. But I suspect that there's a more important forecast occupying the hearts and minds of most Demonlanders right now .............. from my perspective we are a far more mature outfit than when we were narrowly beaten by this mob a couple of months ago, and that alone is sufficient fo get us over the line. We simply won't let ourselves be beaten, no matter what the circumstances. Dees by 15 points in a hard slog. ps. I'm keying this while sitting on a very hard and cold wood and metal bench somewhere in Hobart's Centrepoint Mall. Red and blue scarves are currently outnumbering blue and white by roughly 2 to 1. Go Dees!

  13. I was at the game. Gutted. Yeah their were some bad umpire calls but we didn't look like winning it. People were pumping up ANB last week. Well let me tell you, his decision making and execution today was shocking. Didn't see Hannan get near anything. Hunt was quiet. So so funny. Took my mum for her first game of AFL footy. She said Jack Watts was sh!t.

  14. The last time I opened a game day thread with a touch of poetry, it worked a treat and Melbourne upset the Eagles over there in Perth. So when I heard the distant sound of a gate creaking in the distance in the morning's gusty old weather, I knew that it was time for a touch of Henry Lawson:- "I can still feel the spirit that bore us, And often the old stars will shine — I remember the last spree in chorus For the sake of that other Lang Syne, When the tracks lay divided before us, Your path through the future and mine." Surely, the time has come ...

  19. The garbage in this thread doesn't sit well with me. Chris Connolly made some mistakes but had the best interests of your club at heart, and got strung up on trumped up charges just the same as your club did. Now it comes up again and we regurgitate and eat our own again. Sometimes I wish we had a stubborn, arrogant, pigheaded culture like the Bombers. We are not big enough to maintain all these grudges.

  21. My god you people are hysterically over the top... We are kicking against a hurricane and after it looked like North were going to get a hold of us we shut the game down and go in a goal down with a huge wind at our backs having said that I've seen numerous games where the wind doesnt get sides home so we'll have to play this quarter smart, if we lose than the criticism seen on here so far will be warranted

  29. Tyson is about our only midfielder consistently winning the ball. The rest look like they penciled this in as a win before we arrived. If they wanna play finals they better get this in order because this isn't close to good enough against a bottom 3 side. Idgaf about the wind

  35. Between 2008 and 2013 I lived 200m away from Arden st oval. I used to take my footy down there and have a kick, take my dog for a s*** on the wing, watch training and wear a Melbourne hoodie. I hate that club. I used to think that if I tortured myself enough I was somehow helping the Dees, you know "doing my bit" It hurt living so close to that cesspool Time to repay Melbourne

  37. Just on Dean Bailey. Leaving personal opinions at the time, along with current opinion now out of the picture re the tanking saga. Dean Bailey's tenure was one of the most 'controlled' coaching roles in the history of football. He was given directives from above, some of which went against and some that went with his plans. 'In my opinion' Bailey was criminally underrated, especially by those above him, mainly because of the reason stated above. He had a great working relationship with the players and was pulled from pillar to post to please the playing group and the hierarchy simultaneously. This is what lead to his downfall. With the right culture and support he would have been a very successful coach. You only need to look at what he was capable of doing as a coach when looking at the game against the Swans in Paul Roos last season there as coach. With the benefit of hindsight, the awful drafting and players at his disposal makes it even more compelling. The defensive aspects of his game plan would have come with time but he knew what he was working with and all out attack was the best option and all out exciting football was one of the directives from above anyway (to get more members on board). I had the pleasure of chatting with Dean on occasion and if given a bit more responsibility, respect, input into drafting and a non toxic environment I believe he would be spoken of now in much higher regard.

  42. This. It was easily our worst display with the zone defence. One of the most frustrating things I've watched this year and I doubt North have ever enjoyed scoring so many easy goals. And it was still close. This time they'll be relying a lot more on contested grabs. In those conditions, good luck. I'm still not confident, but my uncle and I have joked for so long that we'll never beat North again while we're alive, it's not really a joke anymore. Please just [censored] win.

  43. It's one of the few things I hate about the footy industry. Most clubs have signed up to the responsible gambling charter but still pull in millions in pokies revenue. Our broadcast deals are massive these days, would love for the AFL to place year on year targets for clubs to lose their dependency on pokies revenue and provide temporary support for clubs that need it. If all clubs did it with AFL support, then no one has a competitive advantage and we can be genuine about our responsible gambling claims.

  44. Gee wiz. Engineer a couple meaningless losses for Judd and Hodge (for example) instead of a Luke Ball, and surely most of us would be up for it. We had a losing culture anyway. That is what most simpletons conveniently dismiss. The carrot was there. This was always a Demetriou AFL system problem, not an MFC intent issue....IMO.

  49. I heard him on SEN this morning and the headline is NOT what he said. Being behind the paywall most won't find out what he actually said. i thought what he said was reasonable.
    2 points
  50. I think the headline is misleading. If it's based on his comments on SEN, he said that planning for the future was smart but that the current draft system made it difficult for club's *not* to tank in some way if there was a potential superstar up for grabs. He calls for a lottery draft to eliminate tanking. I think the headline is more a reflection of the discussion happening on the live podcast. He never actually says that tanking is smart EDIT: Here's a link to an article about his actual comments. The headline the OP mentions links to a live blog discussing today's headlines. http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/the-easy-solution-to-kill-tanking-speculation-chris-connolly-says-the-afl-should-use-a-lottery-draft-system/news-story/40f9a97189f65ae81af960839b3a4820
