  2. Just met Gary Baker ex Demon ruckman who owns a restaraunt in Hobart called Rockwall. Top bloke who was one of my heroes as a kid. I had the Barrassi special, which is an Eye fillet steak with melted blue cheese....amazingly good. He sat down and had a chat with me about Dees stuff, he was chuffed that Hoges won the rising star, and we got talking about past champs, and he said Gary Hardeman was one of the most underrated players in the History of the VFL /AFL, played centre half back and regularly beat superstar centre half forwards in his day. A great night, totally unexpected after a good day for the Dees.

  4. I think I can be overlooked how well the MFC has developed Jesse via the VFL in 2013 and then rehabilitated Jesse in 2014 after his back issues. Well done to all the crew at the club who've go this colt firing! And well done Jesse!

  8. I thought Jesse spoke really well in the SEN interview after the official celebrations. Some things he mentioned:- - when he was struggling early this year Goodwin told him to take a few days off and go surfing at Torquay. Goodwin seems really in tune with the players. - he likes that we have a good core group of players who go hard at the ball and we will get more. - he gave Jack V the nod as the next captain! - he was really looking forward to playing with that core group over the coming years. (I took that as he will sign an extension ) BTW, he picked the trifecta! In an interview about a month ago he said he thought the 3 favourites were Cripps, Sheed and himself! He wanted one of the 3 to win because they were all from WA!! Well done, Jesse. The year has ended on a high!

  10. I am almost certain Watts will be on our list next year, further that he will continue to cement himself as a top 22 player. Statistically he has had a good year, even taking into consideration his poor games. He will again finish in our top 10 bnf, which whilst it is not the top 5, it is still a testament to his consistency over the last two years especially. Posters on here and supporters in general often overstate his deficiencies and understate his contribution. Admittedly I am a fan, but I do see his poor traits also. We are lacking, smooth moving, highly skilled outside players and with Watts we have a player who would be pushing towards the elite category for decision making and skill execution. He has started to put strings of matches together and this year has very rarely been our worst and has began to address his problems. That said, conversations about Watts are impossible to have with most posters as they are unable to see past their already made up mind on his contribution to the side.

  11. Unsure if this has been mentioned but from a Herald Sun article tonight. It is understood Bennell would be happy to go to Melbourne given he rates Melbourne coach Paul Roos. “He’s a super talented player,” Dees coach Paul Roos told Fox Footy’s AFL 360 on Monday night. “We’re a young football club that needs talent, but you’d need to be certain bringing him into any club. It’s a difficult question to answer.”

  14. The arrogant way he struts around the football field is a sight to behold! He knows he can't be beaten if he's given an even run at it. Has the same aura as Carey, Brown and Brereton. Like a roided-up peacock.

I cannot tell you the number of tradies, builders, concreters etc that I've come across on gear of one sort or another. Massive feature of "ordinary aussie" lifestyle. Massive.

  20. I'd trust implicitly the word of a player who has recently left the club. I'm also pretty interested in the idea that you can play at a level beyond your natural capability. Sounds like something out of a bad 80s SciFi movie.

  22. He will be a millionaire no matter where he plays. This won't be about money and gone are the COLA days. He will stay if we stop being crap. Simple.

  24. I'm managing to watch the replay from overseas. It simply involves someone at home setting up a laptop with an iPad in front of it and watching via FaceTime. The quality is about as good as the AFL app so not too bad.

  25. http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2015-09-09/hogan-the-rising-star "The 195cm Claremont product made the most of his opportunities, with his goalkicking accuracy (62 per cent) better than any of the top 10 players in the Coleman Medal race." And every week the TV commentators say how bad his approach to his deliberate kick at goal is...... It does look weird but....

  26. I thought this week was encouraging for our young/new guys and future depth (ie replacements for M Jones, Bail, Riley, Terlich, etc) I didn't think that Newton, Michie and possibly JKH offered much for the future, but they all showed something this week. Newton - I am still concerned about his speed and endurance (especially when chasing), but more encouraging than his goals was the fact that he was in the right place quite a few times when the ball spilled from a forward line marking contest. A couple of his points came from roving the packs for quick snaps. Has a high goal/game average so could be a reasonable HFF/occasional midfielder if he can improve his defensive actions. Michie - some really good quick hands gave us some good clearances. ran to good places and was clean around the ground. His game reminded me Sam Mitchell (obviously a poor man's version) Pace and defensive pressure is again where he needs to improve, but there might be something worth keeping to complement Dom Tyson and to be ready for the post Jones/Vince midfield JKH - I worry that he is not quick enough, but last year he had really clean hands which gave him some time. Has been a bit fumbly this year (confidence?) which has reduced his impact. However It was really noticeable at the game on Sunday how hard he worked to make position. He took a couple of the marks in the last quarter where he sprinted 70 metres to give and option. Given our issues with quick ball movement guys who work this hard to provide an option are keepers for me. Harmes - moreso than the marks were the attack on the ball and player. He won a couple of contests that he had no right to. Bulk him up a bit, and a bit of work on his disposal and he and VDB could be Freo style big midfielders who can go forward and take a grab and kick a goal. White - was more noticeable on the replay than the game, but he looked like a pretty decent footballer. Good one on one, got to the right places and was good by foot. Could be a good servant. I think Stretch is great. Works really hard without the ball, tackles hard despite his size, and doesn't panic with the ball but takes a bit of time to take a good option. Although it was a dead rubber, the game was a good mix of contest and ball movement for us. Really feel like we are on the verge of a 1987 style period where a whole lot of kids come through together. When all the kids have played 100 games together we will be a decent chance. I have really been emotionally invested in Watts/Garland/Howe and Grimes, but I don't think they are our future and should be moved on quickly so we can get better kids to bring in with the likes of Hogan, Brayshaw, Petracca, McDonald, Gawn, Viney - plus all the others

  29. If Brisbane or Carlton get a priority pick, I would be going to the AFL demanding a retrospective one. It is beyond a joke that the worse performing club of the last decade didn't get one, but goddamn Brisbane who managed to snaffle Dayne Beams last year, are going to get one. This competition is a farce!

  34. Good analysis. I'm bullish on the future too, but there is a lot of things that can go wrong. In that first group I only count 5 players I'd consider near-certain to be valuable contributors and maybe 3 out of the second group. We need nearly all of those names listed to fire if we are to have any sort of success. The range of possibilities is huge with such a young group. This reinforces the need for bringing in players in the 50-100 games range for me.

  35. We're reaching the point now where consistently good football (not necessarily wins every week) should be the bare minimum KPI. <50 games with at least 1 game in 2015: Hogan Viney Toumpas Salem Brayshaw Gawn Stretch Kent Frost Newton Michie JKH McDonald ANB White 50-99 games Trengove Tyson McDonald Grimes (still has a place imo) Jetta Then we have a very small group in the 100-150 range Dawes Garland Garlett Howe By 2017, a lot of that first group will be closing in on 50 games, and that second group on 100-150. A majority of our players will be in that bracket. That is exactly what you need to be a finals side. We currently have a massive gap in the 100-200 range that I think is reflective in how badly we drop off between our best and worst. When you think about that, the future is actually very exciting. I suspect that 2016 could still be a slog fest, the team still trying to find its feet. Finals isn't a KPI, it's a goal, something to aim for, but by no means a minimum requirement. Let's not set ourselves up for disappointment. Consistent football is what they should be eying down more than anything, and if finals come out of that, bonus! By 2017, finals will be a bare minimum KPI. Goodwin is going to walk into what will probably be one of the most balanced sides in the comp.

  36. Let's not twist the past. Scully and Trengove were clear 1 & 2 at the time. It wasn't like Martin was clearly the best and we overlooked him for behavior issues. Darling on the other hand....

  39. The back up ruck to Gawn has to be someone who can play in Hogan's Forwardline. I don't think we want a big lump in the square because I would prefer to have Hogan deep - watching Gawn spoil Hogan constantly against Carlton made me cringe about what a lumbering back up ruckman might be to that forward line. We would need someone who is mobile and can spend most of his time on 50 or outside and then can give Gawn a breather for 5 mins a quarter. I don't see Kreuzer as that. There are very few players that are that. Mitch Clark (lol) was that. Kreuzer is good around the ground because he plays as a ruckman against a ruckman, as a CHF, I would play a smaller, mobile CHB on him and beat him on the ground and run off him. Convince me I am wrong though...

  40. I'm not sure there was anything wrong with what Blease said this morning. He said a great club like Geelong has made him a better person. Tick. Said the MFC was too unstable to get the best out of players and got rid of veterans like McDonald too early. Tick. Says he has a lot of mates at Melbourne and hopes the club goes well in the future. Tick.
