On balance I think Roos has been really good for the club but like everything there is good and bad. Those wanting to make a case against can do it based around some poor periods on game day and some rather questionable comments about the past and supporters. They can rightly query his commitment given he was only ever a two to three year coach. The case for is that we have obviously improved. We now look like a footy club, much of the damage of the past FD has been fixed and Roos would have been one of the very few people with enough credits to rectify the carnage perpetrated by previous FD's and administrations. I'm not sure anyone could have done better. If we'd taken a rookie coach and performed at this level there would have been serious questions over his future and if we'd taken someone experienced but less successful we'd be seriously questioned now. Many question Roos' salary. I reckon he's probably paid for it through additional memberships and sponsorships. I think he's been invaluable in making the place attractive to players like Vince (a huge win), Tyson and Lumumba (disappointing) and perhaps his greatest achievement is providing an environment where our young players have been prepared to commit. Many have rightly questioned the succession plan. I think it's been very successful. If Roos' tenure had been open ended imagine the conjecture now or worse still if he decided he didn't want to do it anymore. Roos at least stopped us heading quickly to oblivion. We've now got a stable platform from which to improve. I'm glad he came, I wish we'd improved quicker. Jackson is a very smart strategist. I think he's thought this through very well and got the right person initially. Let's hope Goodwin is a win as well.12 points

I don't like Etihad (shocker, huh?), so I prefer to stand at ground level, floating around as if to suggest I might do a runner at any moment. When Jesse Hogan belted in front of the pack for a mark and just kept running into goal toward the last half of the second quarter today, I gave a "fire 'em up Jesse!" for good measure. The chap standing next to me laughed, and I turned to acknowledge him. He said "I'm only laughing cos he's my son". We then proceeded to chin wag for the remainder of the quarter and through halftime until he went to find family at the opening bounce of the second half. The lesson to be learnt here fellow Demonlanders is that when it's the last game of the year, at Crapihad and with nothing in the result, and you'd rather stick pins in your eyes than watch another rubbish game,it's still worth going just in case there's an unknown reward for your loyalty. Tony had a good Fathers Day.9 points

Mine was his tackle on Mav Weller..Tried the old don't argue on him running into an open goal, and Viney dumps him like a sack of potatoes.. Wellers reaction after trying to catch his breath with Viney strutting to take his kick was hilarious.7 points

Well, it's an auspicious dropping... It is obviously a message and an indication. BUT I want value, you don't build lists by just getting rid of talent - however unrealised that talent is. Sylvia got us Vince, Frawley got us Brayshaw, Scully got us Hogan. So, yeah, trade and move on if you want to but don't get ND33 and tell me we did the right thing.7 points

They would be a lot worse off without my 6 memberships that I buy every year. And WGAF if I choose not to go? What business is it of yours? If the team served up crap like they did for the previous 4 weeks I am surprised anyone went. And don't start me on the last 8 years. I am surprised we have any members at all. Oh and we have lost 22 in a row at that shithole. There is a good reason to go. So take your sanctimonious lecture and jam it. Some people have a life and if we are scheduled to play at Shitihad on a Sunday afternoon which is Fathers Day don't expect anyone to turn up. Crawl back into your hole now....7 points

Bit worried that we just let Jesse's dad stand at the back with the plebs (no offence to you Webber). He should be reclining on a velvet throne in a gold-plated box while someone feeds him grapes.7 points

There were many reasons to savour Melbourne's victory over the GWS Giants including the fact that we managed to rise above St Kilda on the final home and away ladder. I know the Saints beat us twice this year including once under controversial circumstances but the fact remains that, apart from those two victories, they won only 4½ games for the season. Yet every man and his dog is predicting that the Saints are the next big thing along with the Bulldogs. This is what Shane Crawford wrote in the Sunday paper:- Shane Crawford looks into his crystal ball and predicts what 2018 will look like It's not only Crawford talking up the Saints. I heard Tim Watson saying much the same thing about them on SEN this morning and previously, other commentators have also been bullish about them.So what does Crawf have to say about the team which finished up one place in front of St Kilda:- Fair call. We are going through a long rebuilding phase but in my book, we have better youthful talent than St Kilda and one of the main reasons why they beat us twice was the influence of their more experienced types. In 2 to 3 year's time they won't have the likes of Riewoldt, Montagna, Fisher, Gilbert, Dempster and Ray in their lineup so I'm not buying the Saints hype.6 points

I really hate this increasing practice of young players (< 23) 'nominating' clubs and invariably getting to their nominated club. If you're out of contract and want out, then clubs should be able to trade you wherever. Stop putting a gun to your club's head and at least be a bit flexible, either that or wait until you've done some hard yards and qualify as a FA.6 points

Highlight for me : the nucleus of what will become known as 'The Diaper Demons', a group of hard nosed competitive guns all of roughly the same age leading us up the ladder. They will be lead by Jesse Hogan, Jack Viney, Tom McDonald, Angus Brayshaw, Dom Tyson and Christian Salem, and further enhanced by Billy Stretch, his best mate Mr. Neal-Bullen, James Harmes, Oscar McDonald, Mitch White and presumably Christian Petracca. It's a rich group who will continue to crystallise as a team and shake off the past like it's not even there.6 points

Don't think anyone else has mentioned it: It seemed that each time Daniel C had a hand in the play the scoreboard flashed "Thanks Crossy"? Nice.6 points

Thamks for all your hard work Crossy. You are an inspiration to everyone. Really do hope you stick around for us.. Gussy! What a champ!6 points

I actually think it will make it much, much harder to pry someone loose from the Suns now. With Dixon and Bennell, two quality players, already leaving it's hard to see them allowing any more to leave unless they are out of contract. If a player does want out and they are under contract I can see the Suns playing extra hard ball which won't help us at all.5 points

Talked to Pederson on way home yesterday, [he got off train at the G]. He said Frost was right to go this week but they decided to put him away for the year. So Frost will get a full preseason and be right for next year.5 points

Take those glasses off. I'd give our second-rounder in a heart beat and I'd even consider our first-rounder if there were an exchange of picks.. I doubt GC would even entertain a second-rounder though. The bloke is an unbelievable talent.5 points

A public nuisance? Wow, really serious. I find the whole thing ridiculous really. He is the unluckiest bloke to have been caught out when somebody provided that picture of him snorting you-know-what because I would say 80 percent of players within the AFL would be doing the same thing during the off-season. They're recreational drugs and the reality is that kids aged 18-26 ish will experiment with these kinds of drugs in a way that is perhaps less 'carefully thought out' than guys in the older age bracket. Of course it doesn't 'look good' when news like that is leaked but it ain't nothing but the truth. The way people paint these kids is as though they're criminals. Harley obviously has some settling down to do. As he gets older he'll learn to party more 'responsibly'. I guess the Hawks should get rid of Luke Hodge after his little incident on the Thursday night. The Captain of their club.... I'd have no issue in bringing Harley to the Dees and I'd back our coaches and development 100% in bringing the best out of him.5 points

I blow with the wind. I think a lot of us do. Today was great. We showed great promise and considering some of the players out of the side it was a terrific effort. But geez we sucked against Carlton. It's fantastic to end the year on a win so my yo-yo feelings towards the Melbourne Football Club are optimistic and we can all look forward to the new year with hope. Imagine next years pre-season reports! But I am still wary of the teams split personality.5 points

Yep 24 possessions, a goal, 8 marks, 3 clangers with 110 DT points. Not bad. Some people focus too heavily on him and just wait for him to make an error, confirmation bias.5 points

If, and it's a big if, that's true then I trust Roos, Mahoney and the rest 100%. They would have done their due diligence and made a decision that, despite his talent, his character and off field issues aren't something we need at the club going forward.4 points

If he's overtaken Grimes who had 24 possessions, 4 tackles and 1 goal then he must be about three laps of the Flemington racecourse in front of Lumumba who managed 27 possessions in his last three completed games and a single possession in the first quarter against Carlton. It's disappointing Dazzle that in the act of praising a terrific first up game from White you couldn't resist a sling at Grimes who, just for the record, was much better than White yesterday. For someone who is so quick to jump on others you certainly put the boots in where you can. I suspect you'll be dancing in the streets when Bail is delisted in the next few weeks. Happy days eh?4 points

I know Peter Jackson and he wouldn't tell supporters this even if it was the truth. I say this was bs.4 points

Honestly, GTFO if you think Paul Roos thinks that. You can't bemoan Roos-speak and then take such insult from his words 'if you take it literally, and read it in this way...'. The guy has been a bloviator of whimsy for a decade and yet here are sane, functioning humans who are convinced an excellent coach thinks 'fans are to blame.' We just love being the poor, little victim, getting it from all sides. "Even the coach hates us!" decried the poor little Dees fan as he explained his lot to his colleagues, mentioning that Hogan might leave for WA so he doesn't want to get his hopes up too much. "He will probably do a knee anyway!" he said with a nervous laugh before agreeing with the vacuous Hawthorn supporting contractor that 'some clubs just aren't meant to keep playing football.' When the fat, balding [censored] said "I think Dees supporters would be happier back playing in the VFL," the poor little Dees fan briefly shot his eyes wide but then remembered his place: "well, we are playing at that level aren't we?" he said with a self-loathing smile. The consoling, condescending pat on the back from the Hawk, who really only has followed the game since 2008, was married with a "maybe you'll be out of the bottom four next year, hey?" The poor little Dees fan could have corrected him but what would be the point he asked himself - they will probably be back there next year anyway...4 points

Excellent summary but the Grimes criticism is plain wrong . Sure he makes disposal clangers but this can be magnified in supporters' minds by his often prolific number of possessions .4 points

I always feel sorry for supporters like you. Every poster here knows there is still plenty of work to be done, however, for the first time in ages we can see some REAL light at the end of the tunnel... yet you can't bring yourself to enjoy it. What a shame.4 points

Nothing remarkable, just positives about the personnel at the club, Jesse having a good year, the fact that he loves playing with Chris Dawes amongst other usual suspects. He gave some nice anecdotes about Jesse as a teenager, his own football history, quote : 'Jesse's a Rolls Royce, I was a Ford Prefect'. Lots of looking to the future with with new young guns at the club. Very nice bloke, and likewise the conversation. On the man of the moment, Dan Cross will be much missed on game day, he's enormously respected.4 points

Is it just me or does Salem look like he is going to be our best player in 24 months time? Has an aura about him that the classier players in the comp have. Just something about him.3 points

Thought Michie earned himself another chance to play after today's game, as well as the other few weeks. Better disposal than our other depth players anyway.3 points
