good time to re-read this one: http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/how-melbourne-built-jesse-hogan-20150427-1mukbm.html In particular this part: "Hogan kept learning during his time out. He sat in on the forwards' meetings, went to watch games with one of the coaches, wrote up reports on other teams' defensive set-ups and studied the players he expected to one day play on. Misson watched him deal with a string of setbacks, developing some resilience and a clearer understanding of how his body worked. He saw him start to realise that all the annoying little exercises the physios were telling him to do three times every day really were helping him. And importantly, the conditioning coaches got to know him better too, learning how hard he could be pushed, at what point he would break down, how they could best challenge him. They're doing the same thing now with Christian Petracca, a few months into his return from a knee reconstruction." Clearly Trengove will be getting some of these 'when life you gives you lemons' lessons right now. I don't understand this 'he's finished' attitude some people have. JT has played 81 games. The most anybody has played from his draft is D.Martin at 119. In the top 20 of that draft, he has actually played the 8th most games. All that has happened is that he's missed two seasons. Every club every year has a couple of season-ending injuries. He's just been unlucky enough to have two years worth. The club would not be carrying him if they thought he was a write-off. They would have shipped him out to get some speculative ruckman on the list or something. I absolutely expect him to be lining up in Round 1, 2016.14 points

Quite enjoyed seeing Rivers walking off the ground with bis head down after losing to Melbourne and after being exposed by Spencer and Gawn inside 50. Enjoyed it a lot actually.11 points

I can see last year's draft being looked at as a massive one for the club. Especially if we are up in a few years challenging deep in finals. #2: Christian Petracca #3: Angus Brayshaw #40: Alex Neal-Bullen #42: Billy Stretch #53: Oscar McDonald Rookie Draft #2 Aaron Vandenberg Plus there also needs to be included in this Sam Frost who we traded pick 23 for and Mitch White who was our other rookie pick and seems to be developing well as a small defender with a booming left foot.10 points

We are also building a nucleus of guys who hold limited baggage from our losing years and are creating a culture of enthusiasm and expectation that hard work, good development support and buy-in will create the environment for success. Thank you Paul Roos and Peter Jackson.9 points

Watching training at the moment - I forgot how clean and skilled he is. Watching handball and kicking drills with him and Petracca and then Bail, Dawes and Newton - Trenners was fast and silky and hit each target. Only Petracca was the only other to do that (and they did it so quick it was amazing). When he gets back to running - if he feels comfortable running and chasing he is going to be the serious player we know he can be. He is way to skilled. He is seriously talented and has gotten cleaner and better while he hasn't played.7 points

I went to 6 or 7 training sessions in the pre-season and it looked very much to me like Petracca, not Brayshaw, was going to be the one to burst onto the scene. Just his physical development and the way he was going about it, he looked absolutely ready. The fact Brayshaw has absolutely killed it makes me very eager to see CP out there next year, can't wait. I posted in the Trengove thread that article about how the Dees put all that work into Hogan while he was injured and are now doing that for CP, I reckon we won't be disappointed come 2016.7 points

Vince is not only highly effective, he has virtually invented a new role, that of the creative stopper, shutting down a key opposition player while being a playmaker and finisher himself. Equally important I think, is his work as chief morale officer. Clubs need blokes like Bernie - always up beat, likeable and ready for a laugh. Anyone can make themselves a dour professional if they try hard enough (think a former number one draft pick who absconded north), but professionals who also lift everyone up around them regardless of what else is happening are invaluable. That's how I see Bernie giving us some X factor.6 points

A bit surprised this thread hasn't been updated since the win over Geelong. In the euphoria we seem to have missed that we have a very promising player in ANB. I see prior to his debut there was a lot of talk that he wasn't ready and hasn't had enough game time since coming back from injury etc but his game on the weekend was outstanding. When was the last time a 2nd gamer kicked 3 goals for us? Watching the replay again I was more impressed than my first impressions. Thought he contested well, seemd to run all day without a problem and certainly knew where the goals were. He looked very composed. The goal in the 1st quarter was a cracker. He was alongside Lumumba on the wing and kept running as the ball was moved down the boundary line. The ball was kick inside to Jones on the 50m line and there was ANB tellnig Jones to move it on quickly to Watts all alone about 15m out. He kept running and when watts played on and got himself intotrouble he handballed over the top to ANB who had run around 100m and finished off a great team goal. If we didn't have so many good players on the day there would be much more written about this guy. Its early but might have unearthed another player.6 points

Brayshaw's performance will only inspire and challenge his good mate in Petracca next year! I get the sense Christian is a competitive beast who'll be out to build his reputation.6 points

I didnt see too much delusional talk in that thread, although I did skip the first page. What I did see, was a forum that looks like it was put together by a first year IT student, who was full to the eyeballs with the good stuff. Very ugly site to read..5 points

How Stretch didn't get the nickname "Brownless" I will never know.5 points

Wait until Petracca starts to play some good games, they will be in full melt down.5 points

Fair chance the last time he was playing 'regularly' was with an injury. There's no doubt it's an uphill battle from here. But forgive some people for being positive and hopeful rather than writing him off. I have no doubt he has what it takes mentally to get himself back to where he needs to be. Whether his body allows him remains to be seen, but if he gets that right I have faith.5 points

Yes Bernie is a few things in one. Not only is he the experience to replace what we lost, he is icing on the cake. Along with his own enjoyment ( he actually epitomises footy enjoyment ) he seems to have rejuvenated himself. Take that left foot goal. It was like a hole in one. The smile said it all and that's infectious5 points

Yes. Don't get me wrong I love Brayshaw but Fyfe is one of the best players in the league who can do just about everything.4 points

Yeah, Robert Neal. Played for Geelong moons ago. A third of ANB's name is Neal and he happened to be in Geelong, isn't it obvious CB, you !diot.4 points

All they need is Gawny to continue his great form and there could be a huge shortage of #1's4 points

Regardless of whether they're doing it for PR or not, it's still a good thing.4 points

Whilst I am sure he would like to clunk more pack marks, if he is able to bring the ball to ground and fight for it or create the contest to allow our smalls to crumb how is he doing the wrong thing? At the end of the day an average of 2 contested marks a game is elite and I would say his contested marking is poor, but he was never a great contested mark player. I would guarantee that if Melbourne were to play Collingwood again he would have made a lot more contests for Adam Oxley than what happened and that could well have changed the result. Unrewarded running which sets up goals is vital for any team, whilst I agree if we are paying him 700,000 he is being paid overs, but clubs have to pay a certain amount of their salary cap so at the end of the day he is therfore deserving relative to what our list has been. The amount of times I have seen multiple Melbourne players spoil each other in other rounds in our forward half, yet this week our forwardline seemed alot more open with many more 1 v 1 contests and I personally think it is no coincidence that Dawes played and was able to help create but also instruct team mates on the proper moving patterns. Ive never said he was a star, but the attributes he has make him more than handy as a forward, whilst I would like to see him get more reward for effort, if the team is scoring over 100 points how can we fault how the forward line set up. I agree Pederson is more versatile, can play back and ruck, but I think a fit Chris Dawes is a much more important player to the side that Cameron Pederson.. Dawes is no superstar, but as our second KPF and a role player he is our best option4 points

Good Comments C&B Its one of those times that I actually miss TDI training reports as it was always possible to get an assesment from him Hope the new job is going well TDI4 points

Kent falls into the same category as Viney, Brayshaw & Hogan for mine. I see him as untradable (unless it's too good to refuse) due not only to his ability, but his attitude. Kent along with the other three I've mentioned above are team culture changers. Competative, fierce and wont take a backwards step. The offer would have to be out of this world for me to be happy about trading him.4 points

I think Brayshaw stood out before the draft as that ready made player. I thought he was a safer bet than McCartin and Petracca IMO. McCartin was a relatively secure pick for a forward, Petracca logical high quality draft - with that X factor and upside that list managers look for, but still some risk attached. Brayshaw was exactly as you see now, quality kid, rounded game, dual sided player, contested ball winner, on field leader, he ticked all the boxes. I will never understand why guys like Wines, Martin, Brayshaw, Selwood, get overlooked for forwards, or X factor types. There is no way in a hell I'd of taken McCartin before Brayshaw, that was a mistake by St Kilda, while the debate was ongoing about Petracca Vs McCartin, St Kilda ignored the obvious. I think Brayshaw is a future brownlow medal winner, at the very least.4 points

Just finished watching the replay. Tyson's look away kick to Stretch in the last quarter was a work of art!4 points

The thought that the MFC, who have done a pretty good job with recruiting recently, had reasons to believe that Petracca deserved pick 2 over Brayshaw is exciting.4 points
-
I thought he was overrated in that game. Pleased with his work rate but most of his possessions went back to the opposition. I rated Trenners ahead of Scully and still do. I hope he gets back on the park soon.4 points

How do other teams afford all their good players? You can fit more than one big salary in the cap. $1 mil? That's the combined wages of Jamar, Garland, & Howe, none of whom will be at our club next year.3 points
-
We need to use our cap wisely to retain the young talent on the list, dangerfield is individually brilliant but not a brilliant team player. Next mfc who gets 1 mil a year plus should be jesse hogan3 points

The main thing I took from that was that we passed on Nat Fyfe four times! Thanks3 points

Haha. I thought Rooke had a breakout game in the ruck. It was one of the rare times I listened to the commentary. I think the only way Sandy Roberts can remember any of our players names is to give them some random association to a player from back when his memory was more reliable. As for Dwayne... Still a [censored].3 points

The goal might have been a bit lucky but his 100m run was fantastic as was a 2nd game player telling the Captain where to kick it. Good players make their own luck don't they?3 points

To be fair, that's because we have screwed up a number of picks.3 points

Super impressed with that interview with the twins. A really refreshing interview. Their enthusiasm and passion for the MFC and its future was palpable. No guarded comments or footy speak, just full on enthusiasm. Two very genuine boys with no tickets. What you see with these boys you get. No bull merde.3 points

This might surprise a lot of people, but I rate Jimmy Toumpas above Tom Scully! Defibrillators anyone??3 points

The more games we win from now and the more publicity we get, especially about the youngsters, the more we will be seen as an attractive proposition by players looking to move clubs. I would be talking up the players out injured and how they would improve the team as well.3 points
-
Bugger the comparisons with Greig, Selwood, Harvey, Pendles and the like. Within two years supporters of other clubs will be using our Gus Brayshaw as the benchmark player for their newly drafted 'guns'. Their hopes will be forlorn!3 points

This bye basically means I get to enjoy a Melbourne win for two weeks in a row.3 points

I'd also lock in Garlett and possibly Kent and Vandenberg. Also you don't think Lumumba and Dunn are part of our plans going forward?3 points
-
I think ANB and Petracca may fit that bill together with Vanders.3 points
-
Strong midfield? Oh yeah, clearly we won't need him! And he may not be a big possession winner or a clearance machine but what he is is balanced. He can win clearances, can win the goods own ball, can get it out, can tackle, does runs hard outside, does link up, does mark overhead well for his size, will finish well going forward. Will he be our best player? No. But he does complement the other players well and due to his balance and versatility, he could be invaluable.3 points

Wife had our baby, another boy and another demon member. Smoked my Montecristo with a bottle of Ron Zacapa and both are HIGHLY recommended. I've always spent my hard earned on expensive whiskey but the top shelf rum is really stating its case, will have to explore a few more3 points

if he can get his body right, regain full fitness with the speed he had in his first few years, he would become one of the first 10 selected each week IMO.3 points

Well done D'frt. I have observed his development over the past few months. It started slow because he wasn't sure where he was in the team. It didn't take long for him to become a leader and say come with me. He is showing the nouse and leadership our midfield has lacked for years. All in the hands of an 18yo. effing amazing.3 points

Lets just win 2 in a row to start with that would be nice It's an old cliche but this team with it's current stage in rebuilding is very much a one week at a time side3 points

Dare to dream. The Geelong win would instil a lot of belief. It's about time we took another scalp - other than the standard Tigers, Bombers or Bulldogs. They've done that now, having addressed a number of issues on and off. Geelong at Geelong - who would have thought! I'm not saying we'll make finals, because it's not realistic given our form of recent times. But if there were ever a game or result to shake up and correct a number of issues, the Geelong game was it IMO. It's quite feasible if more consistency happens, and key performances witnessed on the weekend, continue. We could win as many as 8 of the last 10. And that's ludicrous given where we are coming from, I know. So I'll say 6 or 7 of the last 10. Which would give us 10-11 wins and finish just outside.3 points

Until we're down by 6 goals at half time against the Eagles and you blokes have the entire list culled again!3 points

Brayshaw having 10 disposals in a match, would be more effective than Matt Crouch having 20 disposals. I wouldn't put too much weight on Matt Crouch having a lot of the football, because he has been largely ineffective. I would be very surprised if we look back at the end of Crouch's career - and kick ourselves for taking Bernie Vince ahead of him, Vince is effective, that is what we need. The amount of benefit our young brigade will receive, having Bernie Vince out there, cannot be measured. Out of all the kids we could've taken with the Sylvia pick, there is only 1 player that would outweigh the Vince trade. So 9.5 times out of 10, you would take Bernie Vince. This isn't even taking into account that amount of improvement that Vince could have in him, he is in career best form, is a 'footballer's' footballer, and could play till he is 35.2 points
