  3. Loved Bernie's comments in the post-match interview. Said he was just having a bit of fun, that's what footy's all about. Said he didn't care about going from a crowd favourite in Adelaide to being constantly booed. Said he's 100% a Melbourne player now, and will do whatever it takes to get a win for the team. But, at the end of it said the Adelaide players are still his mates, and he was getting together with them last night. Would have loved to be a fly on the wall at that get together. Seems a great guy. Very glad we have him.

  4. Adelaide have always been a bunch of petulant and pathetic sooks. The way they threw Trenners under a bus with the bad concussion Dangerfield got (before kicking 5 goals the next week) will live in my memory for a long time. The club have a record of going to the tribunal and exaggerating incidents to get people rubbed out. A bunch of flogs

  5. How about... Adelaide football club a team that thinks they are a premiership contender were pushed and out muscled on their own turf by a team with 10 players of 40 games or less playing, if not for some Melbourne skill errors the crows might well have lost

  6. Curry and Beer is welcome to apologise to Vince, like he had to with Brayshaw, after he labelled Vince's pre-match interview 'pathetic' after he spoke about his time with Adelaide. I think Bernie has made it pretty clear where his allegiances lie now. There can be no mistake that he is a Demon through and through.

  11. The fact that an opposition team was annoyed by us rather than apathetic towards us is a massive win. About time we ruffled some feathers. As for Dangerfield, he's a petulant sook and for what he and his club did to Trenners, he deserved a few more kicks to his nether regions.

  19. WARNING: POSITIVITY AHEAD As we head into round four, we are getting an early indication of the lay of the land. Prior to the season, many predicted the bottom sides to be some regulars of recent times in St Kilda and the Bulldogs, with Carlton to make a further drop as they finally come to grips with the state of their list. Whilst the Bulldogs have started a lot better than was predicted, a 70 point belting from the Hawks shows they are still a fair ways away and will struggle at times throughout the year with currently a very inexperienced 22. The other two have shown they will be bottom four material. Added to these teams are some unexpected names: - Brisbane, whose much hyped midfield has failed to make up for a lack of key position players - Gold Coast, who have fallen off the perch in dramatic fashion with no immediate signs of recovery - West Coast, whose B grade midfield is now coupled with an injury list that has exposed a lack of depth. In total, that is six teams that it doesn't take a wild imagination to see us beating and finishing above on the ladder. Then there are teams who could still push for finals but could just as easily finish mid table or below: - Richmond, the perennial plodders - Geelong, whose aura is finally diminishing with a heavier reliance on younger players, the majority of whom are yet to show much - Collingwood, also a young team with some stars filtered throughout. A tough ask but far from impossible. That's nine very beatable teams. You can throw in the annual upset against Essendon and it's ten. We still look every bit a developing side, but the potential for this season to be one to make a jump up the ladder remains high. I saw getting out of the bottom four as the pass mark. That remains the case, but with the above mentioned teams and the possibility of an upset or two, I'm starting to think that a finish of 10-12th is very much a realistic aim. Am I nuts?

  20. I must admit, any time there's a first quarter like this not involving Melbourne, I always get momentarily excited about the possibility of a 191-point final margin.

  22. Vincent is a character who's been missing from our club for years. A real mongrel who gets under the skin of other players and their supporters. Just watched his highlights on Dangerfield, it's a thing of beauty. Send him to Cotchin next week, could see Bernie pulling a similar number on him.

  26. I was there today in the function room for the round 1 luncheon and saw the bloke up there streaming in an out of the way spot from the main function area. I am pretty sure it was Casey's main sponsor that took the initiative to live stream it and it can be re-watched if anyone missed it: http://livestream.com/WilkarProductions/VFLRd01 Not sure if it was going to be a regular thing, but I would imagine they would stream the non-televised home games. He was there all through the development game, so hopefully he uploads the footage he got of that. Of the Melbourne-listed players, Max King looked impressive up forward. As for the function, Justin Plapp and Shannon Byrnes talked about how the two clubs would be more unified in 2015. He has all the Casey boys on almost the same program as the AFL players with less weights for the younger guys. Shannon hinted that after his playing days are over he would be moving into a full time position with the club. Not sure if he meant with Casey or Melbourne. Fitzy looked bloody great in defense. Pederson played a good game also and would be the most likely to replace Frost.

  29. what a lot of shyte. everything you seem to base your thoughts on, is you think the noisy people want watts to be a pack crasher; or to look like he wants to hit someone.... caarp! the people want watts to go in, to get to the ball first if he's closest, or to tackle if he happens to be the one in the position first. or to use a body bump to fight for a loose ball.... fact All these traits were what robbie flower did on a daily basis on gamedays.

  30. Until we have more mids who can get their hands on the ball 20+ times consistently Cross will continue to be a mainstay in the side. His mature body will be important with Freo, Sydney, Hawthiorn coming up.

  31. The prophets of doom often have the satisfaction of being vindicated - most items in any category of things turn out to be average - it's the statistical bell curve. Isn't the average AFL career around 5 years? So that on the law of averages Watts has done ok so far. Number one draft pick? Everybody thought so at the time; surely time to let that one go. The real question surely is whether or not we will ever get a regular match-winner out of his mix of skills/deficiencies. the impatient anti-Watts crowd are making a lot of noise - but will history prove them right? Here's my couple of thoughts: 1. Talk about Watts being tough and playing aggressively, even thumping someone, is "begging the question" in that it offers as grounds for dumping him the fact that he isn't the sort of player that he isn't. It amounts to the question "Is a soft player worth anything?" being answered with "no, because he's soft." Robbie Flower wasn't one to hit anyone. Lots of good players aren't. It is at least theoretically possible that a team can have a "soft" player who is still worth a game. Whether Watts is one of them - well, that's the question. So, what criteria can we think of (other than hitting people, bashing and crashing) that might be grounds for valuing his contribution - when his value is not going to be in terms of "toughness"? What KPI's can we come up with for a player like Watts? I'd suggest we could look at, for example, things like efficient disposals compared to possessions lost due to his alleged softness; or examples of possession retained through his exceptional skills where we might well have lost possession had a less silky player had the use of the ball - the sort of break-the-game-open things that a Robbie Flower did used to do. The impact of his involvements on momentum in the game. And maybe also we might consider excusing his failing to win or retain possession if tougher players left him unsupported... I'd suggest this is not special pleading, but really just like saying Jetta cannot be expected to outmark Buddy, and so criticising him for failing to do so is just ignoring a fact. No doubt Roos has his ideas of what to factor into his assessment of Watts, weighing whether his skills outweigh his deficiencies. It seems to me that on Demonland we keep hearing frustrated voices shouting here that Watts has deficiencies - and from my point of view those ventings of frustration must not be taken as the whole of the story... Jetta (or anybody) can still be a good player despite there being things he cannot do. Ditto Watts. 2. We are clearly still trying to work out how to use Watts. Garry Lyon offered his thoughts, and Roos is apparently still trying to nut it out. We have a player with these wonderful skills, but cannot get them into play often enough. For many of us his shortcomings keep obscuring the picture of what he brings to the team. I say there is a need - on here, at Demonland - for a more carefully weighed evaluation of what Watts offers. It reminds me of Churchill, the First Lord of the Admiralty who dreamed up that absolute lunacy the Allied attack on Gallipoli in 1915. In fact, everything he did in politics was a fiasco until he became Prime Minister, replacing the insipid Chamberlain in the desperate days of the Blitz, and then Churchill eventually astonished his critics by becoming unmistakably the greatest of all British Prime Ministers. They finally had him in the job where his excellences were exactly what was needed; and his undoubted peculiarities and poor judgment simply didn't matter. Or Abraham Lincoln - a loose cannon personally and no fiscal manager, took the country through a most destructive civil war, but he abolished slavery. Great things can be done by people with great talents, despite their very-evident failings - if you can put them into the position to use their skills. If the times call for those particular skills. Remember Norm Smith taking his old mate's boy who couldn't quite cut it, and creating the new ruck-rover position for him. Barassi had some excellences and some shortcomings - but the right fit unleashed all his good points and he became a superstar. Until we really have worked out where Watts ought to be played to maximise his undoubted skills, and to minimise the effect of his weaknesses, we haven't made use of him properly; and we won't really know. While there is no clarity about his proper role - and I think it is clear enough that there isn't yet - I think we have to hold back from passing judgment. It is fascinating watching. Tantalising, seeing his first game last year, his first game this year - and then having him not kick on. Of course we'd like to see him grow stronger, with a more obviously competitive nature. But meantime, there are star qualities in there! All the Watts-hating on here is disappointing, because it ignores the real issue. What I want to see is the right fit; then and only then will we be able to gauge his value. Until Roos gives him a settled position, and then either lets him and his team-mates grow into his playing that position, or else discards him as a failure in that position - I'd prefer to wait. I think I trust Roos to get it right in the end. Meantime I'm disappointed repeatedly, but still live in hope. Loving it when Watts deservedly gets named in the best. I still think that on skill - vision, hands, kicking, coolness - he is an outstanding talent. Such an amiable and patient person too - I wish it was easier to have the same qualities when watching him play for us!

  33. This reminds me of last years grand final when a number of Hawks players lined up Buddy in the opening stages of the game and dropped him hard a few times. And at one stage Hodge went up and kissed on the cheek...a bit of fun! All still mates after the game. Then the 3qtr time melee yesterday reminded me of that 'line-in-the-sand' game between Hawks and Ess (about 2006) where the Hawks players created havoc after half time. That was the turning point for their style of play and now have 3 flags. A long time since we have had a gutsy, rough up the opp. team. Great step towards earning back on-field respect and no-one will call us 'bruise-free' again. Don't care that we lost. Respect is worth a lot more than one win. We will win many more on the back of yesterday's performance in the years to come. Our tough guys noticeably stood up yesterday: Vince, Jones, Kent Jamar. Jamar getting old but the add Viney and there is a core group of 'come and get me' players. Final observation: Dangers reputation went down a few notches yesterday...basically couldn't take the heat! Edit: one more observation...I don't get why crows supporters and Walsh are all sooking...Tex sure looked like he lined up Tommy Mc leaving him crouched on all fours and looking like he may need to be subbed out.

  36. Even though we lost, it was great watching as I really feel there's a sense of passion and pride reemerging and we now have a fair bit of youth mixed in with a few old pros. To the guy that keeps wanting Cross out, hang your head in shame. He was always going to look a bit slow pre-season, but he does all the things you want from a player - the amount of times he makes body contact to evoke a spoil is fantastic and he's the sort of leader we need. I would be very happy if Roosy signs him up for another year. How good is it that our recruiting staff now seems in synch with the game - big fast guys like Vandenburg, Lumumba, Frost (unfortunately got injured early so little impact yesterday) and tough big bodied midfielders like Angus and Newton. If Petracca hadn't done his knee he'd also be playing and showing the same sort of approach, although maybe as the sub. A lot has been made of Vince's intensity and it was great to see, especially in Viney's absence. A lot has been made of Wattsy's lack of intensity and it will be the topic of the next few weeks. But back off him, the guy is a great kid and has immense skills - it's not his fault that he doesn't have the aggression for AFL, there are more things in life than being an AFL footballer. Roosy will sort it and he's been through it already last year with him - the final 8 weeks or more were devoted to it. He'll be playing for Casey - enough said. Tom Mac rise is now getting plenty of airplay and it's great to see him run off the superstars - a bit like Hawk Chris Langford in the old days. But it is also great to see the return of Col Garland as a player - he seems to actually be enjoying taking the game on now - hard to believe if you watched him last year. Perhaps a bit of Tom Mac's confidence is rubbing off him. There will be three/four changes this week for the Friday night game and it will be interesting to see if a few players get rested after halftime today for Casey in preparation.

  37. I loved the hard tackling and that Bernie got in Dangerfield's face and really ruffled him. What a complete sooky la-la Dangerfield is. The Adelaide coach lacks quite a bit of finesse in the public speaking arena - needs a few lessons from the super composed Paul Roos. I was proud of our boys yesterday. They were tough conditions with a feral crowd, pathetic crowd influenced umpiring and some missed opportunities. I am looking forward to Friday night. Bernie is officially my favourite player.

  39. I absolutely love Hogan and really believe he is going to be a star and elite key forward. However, gone are the days where you would recruit a young player and think to yourself 'gee this guy is going to be our marque player, we found one here' The way the game is now, the thought that dampens the future of our stars is whether or not they will just demand to go home when their contract is up and be forced to accept a trade because of that.. I'm not saying Hogan will do this. I just miss the days where players had less of a say with where they would end up and you could appreciate landing and holding onto a star player and building a team around him rather than the thought of losing him.

  40. Thought id go for a sunday stroll onto the Crows bigfooty board. Enjoy the show ''Paul Roos coaching style. It's worked for him. Once. But Melbourne were attacking in round 1 and got a massive win, kicking over 100 points for the first time under his tenure, then the first half last week, they were on track again. They get smashed in the 2nd half last week to lose by a ton and they come out playing the man and being all dour and defensive again. Note to Roos, you'll need to kick goals to win games! ''Paul Roos. I'm going to avoid having a dig at Vince as he was merely the symptom of the root cause, and that is Roos wanting Melbourne to play like a bunch of goons. Paul Roos caused that 3 quarter time melee with his disgusting style of play. If Melbourne want to play that way, that's up to them but they're not going to win many games playing the man and not the ball''. ''I dont expect Vince to be laughing or being jocular, but a the same time acting like a street thug on a footy field is a reflection of the coaching manner of Paul Roos. Disgraceful''. ''Lost a fair bit of respect for Bernie this afternoon, went out to be a thug and thats it. Paul Roos is destroying that side, they have loads of talent but are being sent out to stop the opposition nothing more''. ''Bernie Vince - a bloke I do know well totally lost his marbles today. Weak as they come''. ''I think on reflection Bernie Vince may list today as one of his regrets in football. I dont think he could be proud about the "fairness" in which he approached and played today's game. Its a pity because the Bernie I remember was a highly skilled weapon at his best for us''. Melbourne have really molded him well''. ''McDonald (wont get near Tex on a dry day)'' Vince - I think Carl hit the nail on the head - his physicality was likely an over reaction against his old club. Whatever the reason, he was deplorable today. Shameful really. ''Bernie in his latter time was emersed in self absorbed pin up boy mindset. In my opinion he never truly committed. After today his tactics were really outside the ethics of AFL fair play. I would not like our players to resort to what he did. I hope he cops some grief on review to pushing players heads into the ground. That is how I seen it. Proud of our guys not to re arrange his pretty boy face.'' ''Melbourne players constantly tackled us at the stoppages before we'd taken possession of the ball. Was infuriating. Because the umps let it go early they had to continue all game. Made it very scrappy''.
