How anyone who hasn't been coached by Goodwin (or knows his coaching capabilities) can comment one way or another is beyond me. Process has been conducted with appropriate thoroughness by smart and experience people, including Roos - who, let's remember, put a premiership coach in place at the Swans. If it's good enough for Roos/Viney/Jackson/Bartlett, good enough for me.10 points

I read a post on Facebook that said the same thing about Demonland... Now I'm just confused, who do i believe?!10 points

If he was out of contract and wanted to leave, fair enough that's the nature of the sport now. The fact that he was still contracted for next year yet we restructured it to pay him out on the udnerstanding we'd be the team he returned to if he was able to make a comeback and then go shopping round other clubs is what gets me. It's despicable behaviour and shows a complete lack of ethics and honour.9 points

What is it with supporters (in general) who threaten not to renew their membership cause of a decision the club has made which they disagree with. If that was the case NONE of us would renew our memberships. Yes we have made bad decisions, yes we have been a basket case, yes we have been the worst club in the past 8 yrs but ffs its the club we support in both the good times and BAD. Yes its been very hard to keep supporting the team lately but don't grandstand and threaten not to renew your membership. Just do it and go about your business. The real supporters while frustrated will continue to support the club financially. I just don't get it not renewing your membership only harms the club further and what's the point of that?9 points

Id rather trade pick 2 and 3 on Shiel and Trelor rather spend it all on the one player who is 25 next year and probably get 5 years out of him the way his body is going. Lets not put all our eggs in one basket.8 points

Am I the only one that doesn't mind this appointment? Goodwin was a champion player, club captain, won premierships, All Australian (x5), B&Fs. He's gained experience under one of the greatest coaches of the modern era (Thompson), and will have a further two seasons with another of the greats (Roos) before taking the reins. Yes, he was involved with Essendon during the ASADA scandal, but he wasn't the orchestrator of the program and he is widely regarded as a stabilizing influence that helped the club perform well despite the constant media attention and speculation. Roos & Co have said that he was very honest with them about his role in the scandal, and I have faith that they know what they're doing and wouldn't appoint him if he was an immoral person. I'm glad that we have a successor in place, and I think that Goodwin seems like a strong appointment.8 points

What a wonderful microcosm of Demonland this thread is. Never fail to make judgements and character assassinations based on half truths and innuendo. Put all your trust for truth in Twitter, Facebook, Demonland and BigFooty. Jump to conclusions based on the feeling of the day and the direction the pendulum is swinging. Ascribe motives without real evidence. By the way, I thought the Essendon drugs scandal was at its peak in 2012. At least that's the period ASADA concentrated on. Goodwin joined their coaching staff in 2013.7 points

Mods - for the sake of most threads, can you please create a "trading" thread where Olisik is the only one allowed to post, with the condition that they (Olisik) are not allowed to post their trade ideas in any other thread?7 points

Might be better getting ROK or Sewell for 12 months for next to nothing as a mentor to our young mids and use picks 2 & 3 on Petracca, Brayshaw or similar.6 points

@DemonFrog Do you actually think you know enough facts about the Essendon ASADA issue to categorically rule Simon Goodwin a drug cheat, and then effectively remove the biggest support you can provide the football club, your membership? I would suspect you, me, and nearly everybody else (including journo's) don't. You also must not think much of Roos, Jackson, Bartlett and rest of board who made the appointment of said 'drug cheat'. Given they conducted the interview process, reckon they might know a bit more than you and I. Maybe a couple of deep breaths might be in order...6 points

Middleton J's decision. Justice John Middletons full ruling against Essendon and James Hird in the Federal Court Brilliantly put together and a very difficult finding to appeal against. Of course, the Bombers won some time and will win more time in the unlikely event that they appeal but it's as damaging a defeat as you can get. An innings and 350 runs.5 points

Mick Warner. It infuriated me at the time and i posted as much. Fair dinkum what a moron. It was actually quite revealing because his 'score' could only have been arrived at by who he perceived had thrown the best mud and made the other side look silly - nothing to do with the legal question of ultra vires. Revealing because it is exactly this shallow analysis that has dominated the coverage, in the main, of this whole circus. As Sue says great to hear a clear, well reasoned argument stripped of all the hyperbole and deliberate obfuscation. Ironic actually becasue even on the mud throwing score board EFC lost with Middleton all but dressing down EFC and Hird's lawyers for their attack on Andruscara and going out of his way to say she acted professionaly both in her role as CEO and in the witness box. Sort of takes the wind out the sails of any Federal review i would have thought.5 points

What a pleasure to hear a well-reasoned analysis, coloured neither by the Essendon apologist cheer-squad of journos, nor for that matter by those of us who have a range of reasons for wishing Essendon sunk. Clear as day. And to top it off, even if he had found it was improper, he wouldn't tell ASADA to wipe its memory.5 points

Why do crud players who are going to be delisted nominate a preferred club anyway? Surely you'd just go anywhere that would have you. I remember Peter Walsh putting in a similar request to Craig Cameron in the mid 00s - "I know I'm gone, if you could find me a new club I'd be grateful". The club obliged and traded him to Port, and moved up two places in the draft.5 points

As amusing as that exchange was, Moneider96 has been banned for a week. Next time just send me a PM and ask instead of polluting a perfectly clean thread. With your 92.5% uni grades, you should be able to manage that.4 points

Next. I can't see how the AFL can avoid giving them severe sanctions for running a drug cheating regime. Little made sure that he protected what was left of Hird's reputation by insisting in the settlement last year that it expressly said there was no suggestion of drug cheating and the sanctions were expressly only for poor governance. Can't possibly see how the AFL can avoid giving them very serious sanctions otherwise the reputation of the AFL as a sport will be more damaged than anything that is going to happen to Essendon. This case has set another unrelated but incredibly significant precedent. The Judge referred to the fact the players had entered into binding contracts with the AFL to be investigated and give up their right to avoid self incrimination and that contractual agreement is binding. This is the first time these contracts have ever been commented on in the Courts. The significance of this is that the court is saying the Clubs and Players contractual obligations with the League are binding. These contracts include the salary cap and the draft. In the past there have been rumours of threats by Eddie No Where that if he didn't get what he wanted he would get the salary cap etc set aside for being anti competitive but the Court is saying if you sign a contract to be part of the AFL it is binding. People have often wondered what would happen if a player or Club took it to court. Well here is the answer.4 points

Great interview on SEN with Goodwin last night on Ox's show. While I still think Robbo is a [censored], he asked Goodwin about his previous troubles which were akin to what the Ox went through. He says he has come out of it a better man and with more strength in his character. For those who condemn him, just think that with adversity comes a better man who survives such adversity. Once again, Roos has demonstrated his currency and worth, not only by the cultural change he will bring to the club - still a work in progress - but also the people he identifies that will bring footy nous to place. Lord knows we need that. Given the sudden upheaval at Adelaide, to take one of their favourite sons from under their noses is a huge coup. Roos would not be taking on Goodwin if he for one minute doubted the integrity of the man. For all the glass half empty people out there, on this one, just go quietly please.4 points

I can understand the apprehension when it comes to Goodwin - I can relate. But "goodnight MFC" and "we deserve to go broke" (whatever that means) are just nonsense reactions to a coaching decision. The MFC survived Neeld and all that he entailed. We have survived worse than the last 8 years, and we have survived the last 8 years too... Nothing is black and white. He may not bring us a flag but I doubt Roos will let him be a failure... He has the respect of those who know a bit about footy and seems to value the right things - culture, relationships, etc - he deserves patience and faith because he is going to get those two things whether you like it or not and when it comes to assistants - who the bloody hell knows whether they good until they prove it in the job?4 points

Well he was in Melbourne. How close is Channel 9? I protest, I'm older than that! Wrong to both you guys above. His answers were completely political, constructed by others and not really answering the questions just giving the same old tripe that all players roll out week after week. I am conVINCEd he won't be there next year. Just hoping the info received is true that he is Dee bound.4 points

Would really like to retain Trengove and Toumpas. See little point in getting rid of them at this stage. Plenty of upside also with Salem, Kent, Michie, JKH and Riley. I think Viney also played injured for most of the year. Add that lot to Jones, Vince, Tyson and Cross I think we have the basis of an A grade midfield. No need for rash decisions.3 points

Off with you then. Don't return. Ridiculous comment based on rumour and 1/8 truths. Just about the dumbest comment I've read on Land.3 points

Yes. Depression is episodic, and at the time he may very well have met the criteria for a diagnosis of 'depression'. That and his current acts may or may not be directly related. If he was running a negative past orientation and stable attribution style (I'm injured, have been for ages, will never get better...) thinking process, then helplessness, hopelessness, social isolation and depressed mood would have all been realistic outcomes for him. We are not in a position to judge that. We are in a position to judge his current (expected) actions, however. If he is running a comorbid anxiety, and he believes that the MFC may act as a trigger to 'kick off' his depression again, I could understand his reluctance. However, avoidance is a poor coping strategy. Would need to address the external locus of control (it's the MFC, I have no responsibility for my response), stable (it will always be like that) and negative expectation. Suggest if a clinician has advised avoidance, he has been poorly advised. Seems to me there is a lot more going on, and MFC may be exercising more control than we give them credit for. Let's see how it plays out.3 points

I've been a Dangerfield sceptic from the start and based on what I've seen and heard from and about him in the last 24 hours, I would say that anyone who thinks there's any truth in the story that he's coming to Melbourne next year is dreaming.3 points

Just one of the players and the fifth for their fourth. They'd be stupid to take a risk on all three - but then again this is the club that was laughing at us when they got Chris Johnson in the PSD.3 points
