Narrowing in on either Grimes or Trengove for Captain

Both outstanding prospects; maybe Trengove a year or two short on experience and I know we would all love to see Grimes spending more time on the ground. The coaching panel will know if Trengove's development will be enhanced by the leadership or not and I suspect if Grimes had not missed so much football the job would be his.

How can Frank Grimes be considered for Captain yet??

If it happens, fair enough it is an inside call, but i would be astounded....the guy has hardly played...let's be honest.

Probably because of what the captain represents to Neeld. To me Neeld wants 3 things; a full time super professional (there goes Moloney thanks to the drink issue last year), who gives 110% commitment on the field (sorry Aaron Davey you blew that last year) and who plays inspirational football (sorry Greeny but no forward pressure and cherry picking goals doesn't count). To be honest if it was Grimes but Trengove was the VC as long as Grimes could be out there for 10-15 games at least then that wouldn't be a bad thing. For all his crazy ideas I actually didn't mind the Grant Thomas pass the captaincy between the young blokes idea. The older players they had like Maxy H and Hamill were very supportive leaders and passing it around gave the young guys ownership. They understood that the future was now. Similarly our older leaders seem to be flawed. You could state a case that from looking in Jamar appears the best leader of guys 25 or older.

The alarming thing isn't actually the number of games for Grimes (32) or his age (22) and the fact he's had 4 years on the list is good experience. They worry is he's been good enough to play AFL since he walked into the club and therefore truly has averaged 8 games a season. The other worry is the nature of this last injury. They are getting better and I'm touching wood but a navicular bone fracture still is career threatening. It's not a knee reco that 90% of players can forget about 2 years after its done. Right now I wouldn't say no to a Trengove/Grimes co captaincy.

i don't like co captains....Dilutes what the job is....You are either strong enough for it or you are not.

i don't think Reiwoldt is a great captain....He wants to be but i don't particularly rate him....St. Fail has had a lot of rubbish go on while he has been Captain.

G Thomas's idea of co captaincy was interesting in theory, but when the heat is on has it worked?

Grimesy sounds like a top bloke but with a bad back and stress fractures in the foot i worry longevity....We need a long term Captain if not this year, certainly next.

why is no one mentioning Jones in relation to any of this?

full time super professional - tick

110% every game - tick

inspirational footy - maybe not the most talented but always goes hard and puts his body on the line - half tick

surely in the mix?

My mate asked me about Jones today. Would be a great example as a leader I think. He puts in the hard yards on the track, he doesn't shirk away from the contest, and is young enough with enough experience. He may not have as much talent as others on our list, but he certainly gets the most out of his body.

i think the real question with jones is, what is his communication like? something we cant answer not being part of the club...

By all accounts (not having witnessed it first hand) Nathan is a very vocal communicator to the playing group at training and on the ground. Does that make him a good communicator? Don't know enough about what he says or how it is taken by the rest of them.

Not sure about his media presentation, but then Maxwell captained a premiership team and ain't all that flash in the media.

i'm sorry but if Trengove is named as captain, my opinions on Neeld and the entire Melbourne Football Club will change

The KID is way too young to be considered as captain, sure he will be captain at some stage in his career but not when he's in his 3rd year, please.

My votes go to Moloney or Jamar, with smaller ones going to Jones and Grimes, even though Moloney had the one slip up last year, he is an outstanding player and leader and will thrive even more under Neeld's control.

Please don't make Trengove captain just yet, sure he will lead on the field, but off the field the older blokes experience will far outweigh what he has to offer.

sorry, left out that i'd 100% respect giving Green another chance, his passion and effort can't be beaten, he'll end up like James McDonald, not the greatest player but gives his all and contributes

im gonna say green will be named captain with grimes and trengove as vice to give them a year more experience before stepping up. then Neeld will decide between Trengove and Grimes in a year once he knows them better and once he sees if Grimes can stay in the park.

Does anyone wonder about Clark tweeting his thoughts about Greeny to the world. I wonder how Brad feels about his "skipper days prob. over". Alternatively has Brad indicated that he would prefer not to be captain. Has anyone seen any tweets from Brad to indicate this.

Don't make Jack T Captain. All the world knows that it is his for the taking when the time is ripe. Just not now. Let him concentrate on his game this year and if necessary step in if Grimsey is injured. I still believe that Jamar is the smokey. He is held in high regard by FD.

Those that say Trengove is too young but want Grimes consider the fact that Trengove has played more AFL games. Anyone that says that it is either Trengove and Grimes for sure next time consider that you are pretty much saying they are our best leaders now. Why not let them grow into the role. Anyone who says Grimes is eternally injured whose to say the new captain won't go down with a season ending injury in round 1. Anyone that thinks the captaincy so young may hinder their football development - maybe it will do the opposite and push them to new heights. I personally have gone have questioned all of the above at some point over the summer.

Choosing either of the two would be a ballsy move, very non- Melbourne. Where I sit now I for one would love it of either of them lead us out in 2012.

I cant believe it would be Grimes. Every mis-kick would be scrutinized to buggery.

The guy just has not yet made enough of a mark. Let him play mid-field for at least one year (if he can) and actually earn his stripes like Moloney.

I would be happy with Jamar, Molony or even Trengove but even JT hasnt set the world on fire.Yet.

I would be happy to get 100-1 on Green. Storm in a tea-cup...

Reading the various off season reports, I had formed the view that Jones would definitely be in the mix. He's always mentioned as 'training the house down', being especially vocal, encouraging and enthusiastic at training etc - qualities which I expect would impress Neeld and his new assistants. He is also hard at it, loves the club, rarely misses a game and has leadership experience under his belt. The fact that he has a massive dirty great sleeve tatt would also have to impress a coach coming from Collingwood ...

As much as I like Trengove, he's still too young to be captain IMO. And as to Grimes, he's just not on the park enough. Hard to captain the club from the stands each week.

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
