PREGAME: Rd 06 vs Brisbane

Featured Replies

My (not so helpful) 2 cents... Essendon's kicking games picked us apart. Brisbane's kicking game >>>>> Essendon's kicking game.

If we do not pressure the contest and allow the ball to easily get on the outside, we are going to get absolutely smashed.

There are too many possible changes to predict so the injuries are what ill stick to for now.

I'd put Tholstrup on Zorko or Wilmot, to negate defensive transistion as we will put up lots of turnovers.

If Melksham pulls up well, a defensive role on Andrews.

Midfield wise we are heavily outgunned - which has me worried. Ashcroft bro's, Neale and McCluggage that is an all-star midfield. Neale is their ball winner so obviously Steele goes to him to negate him as much as possible. I wonder if we bring in Culley or Spaz to also try a defensive setup around the contest.

If we can keep the loss to under 40 points i'd be happy to move on to Round 6.

Zorko out with a calf.

Neale's 300th.

If he is a selfless player that prefers team success over personal accolades.....he would/should be open to it.

It would be nice to have marking options on all parts of the ground.

Brodie G says hi !!

Melksham out.

Salem out.

Rivers set to miss a few weeks with knee issue.

Salo amd milky confirmed outs

AMW for Salo

Probably Laurie back in for Melky - go smaller for better balance

Then....... TMac out - Petty back. Bring in either Moose or Luker for the extra tall/ruck cover

.

You'd think AMW would be a straight swap for Salem. Really looking forward to seeing him back in the senior side should he be named.

We were probably too tall last week so Melk comes out for Laurie for mine.

I think Roo has used up the last of his credits from his six goals against St Kilda. If he turns in one more average performance, it could spell trouble, especially with all of AJ, Kentfield and Jeffo in form in the VFL.

Honestly if we even come close to the Lions on Sunday, it will just raise more questions about our effort against the bummers.

Yeap. Lions are playing an old fashioned brand of contest, stoppage and clearance (1st in the comp). I recall a few years ago they kicked something like 5 goals from forward 50 stoppages against us. We have been good at the centre square this year because Pickett is a freak but around the ground its been a lot more iffy. If they get on top of the stoppages and clearances it could get very, very ugly.

Yes, pressure will help but they are a low handball team, so its not like their game plan will break down if we press the ball carrier like GCS. If their kicking is on they will slice us apart. It wont be pretty. With our current injury toll, we are playing a bunch of kids against back to back premiers. We have to be incredbily efficient going inside 50 and really need a bag of 4 or 5 from a key forward to keep Andrews pre occupied. Maybe can run the legs off them after half time also.

We didn't exactly show up for melky's 250th, no reason we can't spoil the party this weekend.

You can’t drop blokes off 1 bad game, have some balance FFS

who am i dropping off one bad game? structurally we have an issue with TMac and Petty, its one or the other next to lever and turner not both, personally id be settling petty down there and leaving him there

JVR has kicked 1 goal in a month

Salo and now Melky injured

so its 4 changes

TMac, Melky, Salo, JVR

Luker, Jeffo, AMW, XT in

better balance with the talls as luker can do the second rucking but offers more forward than Petty, and either he or jeffo might get a 30-50% TOG type role

bring in some more speed off HB tholstrup plays up the ground more in a defensive mid role, i also think he'll get torched by Charlie/Lohmann/Bailey if we leave him down there

could also be the week Heath debuts instead of Kentfield and Jeffo playing given teh lions ruck setup

-Lever Turner AMW

-Lindsay Petty Howes

-Langford Steele Culley

-Sharp Jeffo Chandler

-LPickett Mihocek Fritsch

-Gawn KPickett Sparrow

-Windsor XT Kentfield Tholstrup Langdon

Just maybe Max for Mac to help Max?

Out. Salem, Melksham, McDonald

In. Moniz-Wakefield, Kentfield, Laurie

Petty goes back

Smaller, faster, more agile

Better balance up forward

This is where I'm leaning. I'm very much on record as not being a Laurie fan but he was the one who got the call up to replace Fritsch vs Gold Coast so I presume he's next in line whilst the likes of Cross, Rivers, Jiath, Viney and Bowey remain injured.

Kentfield forward, Petty back, TMac out. AMW replaces Salem. Laurie replaces Melksham. Reasonable balance, improved running.

Agree Henderson has shown little but I ran out of options

It was between him and Laurie , but unfortunately Laurie has not taken his chances

White, Onley, Taylor, Mentha, Matthews, Berry are not ready yet and all need more development at Casey

Adams has shown very little

With recommending to get Kentfield in, it keeps Johnson and Jeffo to impress more at Casey.

And Heath in and JVR out

Kentfield plays key forward alongside Mihocek

Fritsch Chandler and Sharp as forwards

Laurie or Henderson come in but that shows our current injuries list and lack of depth

4 changes In: Taylor, Moniz-Wakefield, Jefferson and Heath

Out: McDonald, van Rooyen, Salem, Melksham

B: Lever, Petty, Howes

HB: Tholstrup, Turner, Moniz-Wakefield

C: Windsor, Langford, Lindsay

HF: Chandler, Mihocek, Sharp

F: Jefferson, Fritsch, L.Pickett

FOLL: Gawn, Steele, K.Pickett

IC: Taylor, Langdon, Sparrow, Culley, Heath

EMERG: Laurie, Kentfield, Henderson

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.
