Having worked with someone in a not dissimilar scenario to CP5 - and went on to win a couple of premierships, the energy and effort expended each match was huge to manage his anxiety of re-injury and the potential cost of that, whilst being in a culture of - it's happened...just harden up.

From a neurobiological point of view, those systems are designed to keep you alive, not get you back into contested footy. Even when the body is “ready,” the brain often keeps running protective patterns – subtle hesitation, altered decision-making, or a shift in how risk is assessed – and that can permanently change a player’s game. To me, that all looks pretty clear in how he plays now post injury. If Christian was 22, then maybe it would be different - the holistic view is, presuming he wants/has (IDK) a family, other interests, then mortality (be it philosophical or literal) would be consistently front of mind, be it game day, or training in terms of having to protect himself, subtly sometimes, and more pronounced at others.

The challenge isn’t forcing the old version of yourself back, but learning to operate within the new reality. And that’s not failure; it’s the natural adaptation of someone who’s survived something most people never have to face

This is one of the pieces that does my head in.

Salem, sublime user of the ball but not so much anymore.

Windsor was pretty good last year but not so much anymore.

Viney used to be woeful, then learnt to lower his eyes about 3 or 4 seasons ago and is now terrible again.

I still feel like we've let stands and skills slip over the last two years.

Great game, great to see the effort and some more switching up today and faster movement for a good portion of the game.

Our list isn't too bad. Our skills are generally deplorable. Way too many turnovers

He's not alone. Chandler one of the worst offenders here also.

Chandler was also on his own in the middle just off the square during one of McVee's kick ins late in the third.

Instead of leading and calling for the over the top kick into the middle he points and heads straight out to the skinny side where the ball ends up on top of everyone's heads and turns into a 50/50 at ground level.

Luckily Culley ends up with it and runs / handballs our way out of congestion which i think Chin ends up on the end of it giving it to Melk who gets the joe-the-goose goal to Tracc.

Chin is a handy player but alot of his good work is undone by his poor decision making / lack of composure / awareness on occasions.

That's not to say Chin never lowers his vision or hits targets but he should be doing alot less of the bombing / lack of awareness things now given his experience.

Unfortunately they're still happening though and in some cases, costing us opportunities in transition where we have advantage in play and should be punishimg the oppo more often.

Do you mean the Goodwin who was in charge when we recruited him and then developed him and gave him his debut?

He, like others eg, Kentfield, were raw and needed training and development at Casey.

I see Culley and other young players flourishing and I think it’s down to good player development.

Sure, Goodwin had loyalty to players like Melksham (and Petty) who many wanted delisted.

Who at Casey do you think deserves a go that hasn’t had a chance yet?

Culley was left in the VFL not because of your assertion but because of his inconsistency. His attack on the ball/player now in the Seniors is result of making him work just that little bit harder in the VFL. It goes to show that Taylor has again found another "goody".

We were pretty damn good today but got beat by a side that is so stacked for elite talent it’s not funny.

Bont, Darcy, Richards and Dale might be 4 of the 10 best players in the comp. The first 3 might be in the best 5 players in the comp.

By contrast, other than Gawn, we didn’t have too many stand out performers. We kept in the game through system and work ethic, and that’s what I loved about today.

Windsor in the middle looked good. Rivers and McVee got up the ground more and looked good. Culley on a wing looks good. Langford did some ridiculously good things in the forward 50. Trac started slow but IMO his second half was much, much better. Turner did a lot right, although his turnovers really killed us.

Would love to see us bring this system and intensity these next two weeks.

Agreed.

They both deserve one more season.

Would also be nice for Tom McDonald to play 250+ games for the Demons.

I took the statement to mean not just this game but recent games which I think is incorrect because Kossie has been playing well.

We played 1 qtr of great and the rest we were chasing, in all those close losses apart from the saints we also played 1 qtr of good footy

No question on desire but this should be a non negotiable.

Not sure what it is why we give up leads, is it leadership from our seniors to steady the ship?

New coach will certainly have talented players to work with so not a rebuild and need to be will supported by a revamped footy dept & Chaplin needs to be given a senior role to drive the program with the new coach.

Probably has something to do with the fact that’s it’s an even completion and that all clubs give up leads. St Kilda is one of those outliers that make It seems worse than it actually is. 🤷‍♂️😎

How’s the mythology around Collingwood coming back from any position going these days… these runs of things, are always always temporary.

I somewhat only half jokingly suggested earlier what we would take from yesterday was "learnings".

Yes, I was having a little dig, but I also thought ( really ) that we might learn a bit about this mob, something you only really see when the goal posts move ( fitting ..lol ) and the status quo is thrown in the bin. I just wondered if we might find out more about who can as well as who should play for the Dees.

There was some great footy ... and we played some of it. In classic fashion the game was there for the winning only we weren't quite good enough. The Pups desperation in the end was probably the difference... but that was in the end !! During other periods of the game our Dickensian schizophrenia shone and dimmed. There's not a lot of point lamenting some of the silly mistakes. They happen, they still tend to bob up more than desired. Our skills need attention. I put down some of our calamity to the notion that some old habits die hard and some of our older die hards perhaps have seen better years.

There seemed a little more verve in our play. Dont think ive witnessed as much leading ( well there was some..and noticeable imo ) as was on display.

With regard to some of the fluff ups... well there looked like the intention to get a bit more jiggy, more maverick, more purposeful but it just didn't come off. Some understandable frustration apparent.

Had a few of those plays gelled better and we win.

For mine a 'learning' was we can actually play better footy. It was a bit rough, but there were signs.

A new 'enabler' with some new team members and we might be competitive again.

Again we certainly stuffed up a few things, but we looked like we were trying. I enjoyed the game if not the result.

Possibly the greatest takeaway from the game .... we did the right thing..... in forcing change. Was just needed.

We have been playing fast, transition footy all season and playing with an attacking mindset all season. In fact it's been one of our problems - we don't have the cattle to not cough up huge scores on turnover, as we did again yesterday.

Tactically and method wise, yesterday's game was no different to how we've played all season, particularly since the bye.

In fact, we have been really improving our transition game in the second half of the year, as evidenced by a raft of stats, for example scores from defensive half.

I mean we did some of our best transition and ball movement all season in 7 of our previous 8 quarters before yesterday's game,

I seem to be the odd one out on how good the game was as at the ground the first half was a bit of a snore fest: Both teams applied little pressure, their kicking for goal was poor and they looked to be just going thru the motion in 2nd gear.

In the 3rd qtr those 3 things changed dramatically to make it a really exciting game. When we hit the front the crowd roared!! It was a great feeling, reminiscent of times past. It was a small crowd that made a lot of noise.

It was at that point I felt the players and fans really lift and put the drama of the past week behind them.

Didn't get a win but It was a great way to end the week and give everyone some momentum for the next few!

Leadership is a big problem for us. Max is great but there aren't 1 or 2 more who can ice games, keep their heads, maintain possession etc. TMac maybe one but no one in the middle.
