Arguably, I can only nominate Chandler as the sole improver in performance from last year, and even he hasn’t been overly convincing.

Surely this is an indictment on the entire football programme at the club

I've improved a lot, I no longer swear at the T.V or throw my remote at it. My wife thinks Its an improvement!

To be fair... when you lose by 10 goals every week everyone looks like [censored]. But theres also a reason why we're losing like this isnt there.

Yeah, well, say it....

No one. We've gone backwards.

Not to pot Tom Sparrow but he is the epitome of this question for me. Players you wanted to see take the next step since the flag but haven't.

Has to be Chandler since moving to the wing. Outsized by Dempsey, but still busted a gut and won some 50/50 contests.

Maybe Bowey……….compared to last year and not his 2021/2022 form.

That’s about it. Pretty damning for all of our coaches not being able to develop our players.

So a new coach, many assistant coaches, GM of footy, list manager and CEO…………..no too many holes to fix 🤮

There have been too many games over the last few seasons where he’s gotten the ball and I’ve done the whole ‘oh, Tom Sparrow is playing’. He plays ok and has some good games, but isn’t damaging. I doubt his name is mentioned by opposition coaches very often, if at all. Which is what I was saying about him in 2022 with the caveat that he’s still learning the game.

Turning 25 this year.

Bowey is having a good year

And if we were functioning better as a team would be even better utilised

He’s had a great start to the year. It’s been very worrying that his intensity at the contest has been a point of difference to the majority of other players. A number of times over the last 3 games I’ve asked myself why is it he looks like he’s on another level in terms of being hungry for the ball?

Why isn't JVR making any progress?

Seems to have trouble with clunking marks.

as well as using his body well...or making good leading patterns or even contesting well in the air to bring the frikn ball to ground half the time. So he IS making progress...but it looks like its backwards.

You’d be lucky to say more than 3 players. The only conceivable world where that happens is one where the players are genuinely hating and confused with the game plan. I’ve never seen a team with this many players ‘out of form’ & ‘devoid of confidence’.. It’s a chain reaction from the coach. Goodwin has NFI and it’s filtering down.

I’ve also never seen so many uncharacteristic mistakes from even the better kicks in our team. aka bowey, melksham & kozzie were making some howlers.

It’s so grim atm. GRIIIIMMMMMM

Definitely only Chandler and Pickett from his pre season form..

Bowey and Chandler are probably top five in our B&F if it was held today.

TMac has continued his late career resurgence in defence.

Otherwise, pretty slim pickings.

J. Brown: Van Rooyen needs to work on his foot work, it's poor, he is very clunky. His ability to turn his defender isn't great. I think about it as a phone box, what's your craft in the phone box. How can you use your feet and strength to protect the drop zone, for him it's not there. He is turning balls where he has 60/40 advantage to 50/50 at best.

To me it looks he tries to hard or is terrible at reading the flight of the ball and runs under the ball as well. This is what happens when you don't actually have someone who is a forward, coaching forwards.

Can we please raise a fund to get JB down for a few sessions with JVR. I am sure he has it there but looks confused.

Bowey and Chandler have both objectively improved. T Mac’s unexpected renaissance is continuing.

Petty, Rivers, Viney, Spargo and JVR in general and Fritta’s goal kicking have all gone to the dogs.

The rest have stagnated (Oliver, Trac Gawn, Salem, Lever, Turner, Sparrow)

When 3 players are at the top of their game, you’re probably winning 2 to 4 games for the year. I wonder how many Hawthorn players have improved and/or are at the top of their game?

it would be much easier to list out the players that have regressed

No, not enough room on DL.

We’ve spent two first round draft picks on key forwards entering their fourth and third years and they are miles off impacting at AFL level, really concerning, I think we will have to go back to the well and draft a couple more this year, very time consuming, there’s no way we bring in a big trade to fill the void. JVR will become a KPD in my view.

I know it was VFL, but JVR was a mostly one grab mark and would come out and meet the ball at Casey. It's like the forward aggression has been coached out of him.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
