History buffs: Has there ever been a team in the top 4 so late in the season with a percentage below 100?

    Gee that place brings back memories..    used to live on Wills St as a kid... that park was like my backyard ( in a fashion ) ,long before the freeway went through and re-jigged that pocket ;).  Spent hours....hours..... HOURS with my Lyre-bird and a few mates.....practising goal kicking and marking.  Fond memories ;)

    Anyway...back to the game... still at 6's and 7's as to what 's really going on. Quite intrigued really. Am truly hoping for a masterstroke of selection and intent.

    The truth is: we had and still have 3-5 absolute champions, and quite a few good players behind them. But so do our competitors!! Eg Carlton have had Cripps and Walsh, Weitering and Curnow. Footscray have many good players starting with Bont.  Brisbane have got many good players starting with Neale but all around the ground. Etc etc etc. We are not the only team in the league and premierships are not given for the asking. And we have had some bad luck at critical times, most notably the injury demolition of our forward line at the pointy end of last season, not to mention what happened to Gus.

     

    Time to move on. We have won a flag, we have been consistently right up there, we are regularly pointed to as a model of defensive setup, and we have brought in a heap of good young players to take us forward. Let's support them!

    Carlton - Cripps, Curnow, McKay, Wetering & Walsh

    Brisbane - Neale, Dunkley, Daniher, Andrew, Cameron

    Bulldogs - Bont, Libba, Naughton, Jamarra, English

    Pies - N Daicos, J Daicos, Moore, Pendlebury, Sidebottom

    Swans - Gulden, Warner, Heeney, Papley and up until this year Franklin

    Every side in the top 8-12 teams atm has genuine stars running around. It just takes a bit of luck and to get your game going at the right time to win a flag.

    We finished the 1998 season in fourth with a 14-8 record and a percentage of just 102.7%.

    Back in 21 there were a couple of posters who would come on and post how we were not good enough and wouldn't finish top 4 couldn't win it etc. Called the positives [censored] polishers etc. There was ProDee and another poster who kept the positivity going whenever it looked like we may falter, unfortunately I can't remember the others moniker, doesn't seem to post anymore which is a shame.

    That is a resolute statement, PF; it is also quite reassuring and as such, relieving, so it will be - perhaps - a lesser load for us to bear as the game progresses. All we need now is for Jeffo to get appropriate gametime and he flings himself into the fray like never before. That would not be fumblingly reassuring, that would be plainly fabulous for the MFC. Your vote of confidence is working already!

    Brings back memories for me, too - in those pre-freeway times - giving up a morning of yabbying in Gardiners Creek for a good two-hour session of kicking practice and then on to Central Park for some distance running. My bike got a flogging in those days ' 50s - 65 ' . Wills Street fish & chips were the ideal nourishment for a budding footballer - as testified by Kevin Bartlett - but my debut was with the Chadstone footy team, and we were lousey! Just an aside, now back to the real stuff ... Carna Dees!

    What's infuriating is that they could easily make top 4 off the back of 1, maybe 2, wins against eventual finalists.

    Got to smash the Bombers. My hatred for them stems from 2000 GF and the fact my brother in law supports them. Not only is he an arrogant toss, he is also my brother in law!

    Did anyone ever hit one high enough to touch the high voltage rock n roll power lines? A few blokes from St James Glen Iris had a crack at it. Bats in those dayz couldn't do it as far as I know, but these days . . . maybe?

    Kicking efficiency is actually down significantly, you were probably looking at kick % which is just the kick/handball ratio as a percentage. Inside 50 marks are up very slightly but overall marks are down, and contested marks are down significantly. He's having more shots per game but scoring noticeably less. Really pressure acts are the only stat that he's had a significant increase in.

    Also worth factoring in that he's a forward in a side that's performing more strongly than last year. If he hadn't improved or declined this year then one would expect his stats to be up anyway, due to more access of the ball. I rate Amiss a lot, but the stats couldn't argue against an improvement any more conclusively.

    He is becoming a more rounded player, week by week, and the stats prove that "conclusively". If that isn't improvement, I don't know what is. And I am sure Longmuir is very happy with the role he is playing in that forward line where the other key forwards (i.e. Treacy, Jackson, Banfield, etc.). are sharing it around

    This is a must win in my household, not just for me but for my little one. Wife and father in law are devout Essendon supporters. Many Essendon paraphernalia has been intercepted or thrown out, but I’ll struggle to keep this up if we lose. They’ll be too strong.

    They’ve got Fremantle, Sydney and Brisbane away in the last month so there’s no where to hide for them.

    I’d imagine to finish top 4 they’ll certainly have to win one of those 3 games. So eventually they’ll have to finally beat a premiership contender to earn their top 4 spot. Arguably they already have by beating GWS.

    I suspect they’ll be a North Melbourne of 2007. Get spanked in the qualifying and prelims while sneaking over the line in semi.

      A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.

      The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder.       What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around.It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
