Yes playing as the #1 ruck has increased the player rating but after Rd 10 he has been fairly ordinary and actually providing very little around the ground.

I see why we traded for him but also agree once the decision was made that it didn’t work it was right to clear space and move Grundy on

Grundy can't mark above his head. He was never going to work as a forward. He was never going to work if we asked him to concentrate on getting back as the extra defensive interceptor. He was only going to work as a (mostly) very effective tap ruckman (although I would say he relies far too heavily on umpires being extraordinarily lenient with their interpretation of holding during ruck contests). That would have meant consigning one of the best Melbourne footballers of the last 50 years and arguably the best ruckman of all time the last 20 to an understudy role. 

Easy to say in hindsight, but I found it equally baffling way back when it was clear Melbourne were keen on him.

i thought the grundy acquisition was a risk, but a risk worth taking - another example of the club not being prepared to simply sit back and NOT try something different

He's a small man in big man's body.  Generally hits to his feet, creates a contest, lays a tackle and goes again.  His clearance work creates turnovers mostly. He can't mark and he can't defend and he doesn't kick goals.  None of this is news.  It was a terrible decision to recruit him in the first place.  I am pleased that King and co have finally noticed. Lucky for the swans that they have an incredible midfield (and that Collingwood are still paying a big chunk of his salary).

Perfectly said.

I think it was pretty clear that we were going after a key forward to improve a team well within contention.  

When none was available, we tried Max was happy to sacrifice his own game to try and become that extra marking forward a lot more.  I don't think there was any other options out there so well done to the club in being proactive to improve.

Sadly, it didn't work with both Max and Grundy sucking up forward.  We did right by all parties and moved Brodie on.

I've never understood why people saw this as a negative.

Agreed, but I wish we'd tried Max behind the ball and Grundy in the ruck. We obviously thought it would wreak havoc with our defensive system and leave us vulnerable at ground level if Max were to play anchor.

Anyway, as you write, we move on.

I was hopeful and a little excited when Grundy came our way. I watched him closely in his first few games and what I saw was, he was an all glory but no substance footy player. Refused to run hard and throw his body in defensively, but if he had a chance to play attacking footy he would put in effort.

But WAS Max happy to play forward more?? The answer was NO and as consequence we Blew the Premiership to the shizzen last year. Exhibit A Schache the UNUSED SUB WHAT GREAT COACHING THAT WAS🤮🤮

I keep wondering if Schache was brought on in the last quarter, to play on the clearly concussed Weitering and told to run him all over the place,or just get out on your own in space, if one possession could have put us in a PF?

Weitering was shaken and unbalanced early in the last from a head knock and ended up staying on and giving the pass that led to the final Blues goal.

That is exactly what happened last year. Grundy ran out of form and his last 6 weeks in Sydney coincides with their drop-off. Last night Draper moved Grundy off the ball and took a clean possession. Swans looked better with McLean in the ruck than Grundy. Max back as 1st ruck almost certainly will result in his 7th All Australian. I cannot remember a time when 1 ruckman has so easily brushed aside his opponent as Draper did last night.

Him and Don Scott are suss .

I'm the only one in this town that can rock a manbag and still look macho.

No wonder Reg went to Sydney.Manbag and Manbun in one.Totally suss.

Could not have been any worse than Tmac, six touches and none in the last plus no scores for the game. 

Draper loves playing Grundy. He owns him. He smashed him last year when Grundy was with us. 

Brodie is just a battler these days. He’ll have some good games, but his importance was always over inflated because of who he played for.

I agree that he was a really weird choice as sub, and this season has confirmed that he was not a half sensible trade in to say the least*, but in that last quarter TMc was quite lame ( not a criticism of Tom by the way) and Schache was as fresh as he ever would be.  I believe he can run, so running off the concussed but not subbed (CFC are such a privileged shonky mob) could not have been a worse option.  Poor coaching in my inexpert view - akin to the Stan Alves leaving Shannahan one on one on Jarman back last century in a GF that got away. 

* remind me please of the details of the trade. Who out and who in, what draft numbers etc. Thanks.
