Duncan Wright vs Brayden Maynard. Similarities?

Factual Similarities:

Both Played in losing Grand finals

Both wore original jumper numbers in the 30's

Both took out a champion opposition player in finals (those players' season over as a result)

Both victims have a flag to their name

Both victims were wide open and undefended 

Neither Wright nor Maynard were suspended

Both instigators were Collingwood players

 

Factual Differences:

In Wright's case the ball was about 40 metres away, Mayanard was around 10 metres away.

Each act occurred in different centuries.

In Wright's case , no-one saw the act - In Maynard's.......the AFL world saw it, me live.

Conclusion

 I guess in my mind I'll see both acts as one in the same on balance

That Gus's hit happened 58 years later and still went unpunished is unfathomable - but that's just my opinion. At this stage only an opinion - but like Wright - Maynard will forever be associated with the recent act - thanks to the internet. A legacy that he will spend his lifetime justifying - as Wright had done till he passed away.

I wouldnt bet on dees giving Maynard a hard time. 

Why didnt we sort him out in the QF when we had the chance. Hawthorn would of put Maynard on a stretcher to keep Brayshsaw company.

If anyone gets hit in the KB game its probably us. Collingwood is protected but we're not. May will be reported and suspended in a nano second if he so much as tickles Daicos.

The AFL is a joke run by amateurs.

Im becoming less interested in this season 4everyday as we approach March 7.

Some comments about the incident are getting very silly.

Maynards actions were reckless & similar to Cripps & Rioli in recent times who both managed to get off due to "technicalities". It was nothing remotely like the Wright/ Somerville incident.

The fault rests totally with the AFL & the way the rules were written and interpreted.

Agreed this is squarely on the AFL. After all that was said and done re head high contact, the fact that Maynard gets off is laughable. If I’m a legal team positioning for a class action on concussion, that goes in as evidence item number #1.

Didn't say the acts were like for like if you read the post.

My conclusion however is that outside of Collingwood this act defines Maynard's career. And like Wright we will hear now a lifetime of justifications etc.

That, for Maynard's far worse a penalty than 3 weeks from a Tribunal.

Most interesting to me is how the Pies handled each case. Pretty classy in 1965. Disgraceful in 2023 thanks to current culture.

Pretty different acts to me.

One was a king hit behind play, the other was a bump to the head sort of in play.

One was a criminal assault and the other a bit of rough/dirty play.

Collingwood lost John Greening to a king hit years ago by Saint Jim O’Dea. Greening could have been anything, he was brilliant.

Maynard should have got at least 8, The AFL are going to rue this decision for Decades. 
for at least 10 years we were told that the Head was sacrasanct. But obviously not when The Filth are involved. 
Brayshaw had finished his kick and was wide open to the full force

I looked at the O'Dea case and noted the victim in Greening was a Brayshaw-type player - all class, except O'Dea got 10 weeks - because it was on the tele. 

Thus Wright's defence of " no Comment" to the police investigation, along with no tangible/reliable witnesses meant he walked- just like Maynard. O'Dea not so lucky.

But Wright was a "good bloke" notes the Pies club website.  Just like Maynard.

Different methodology,  but similar result. Maynard could, and should have, avoided tucking in his arms and knocking Gus out. It was deliberate. 

The AFL could, and should have, suspended Maynard on rules existing at the time. They didn't. It was deliberate.

Wright played 3 times against us for 3 losses, including the 1964 GF - good result!

Amazing photo from the time of him standing hands on hips watching the play 80 metres away while Somerville is flat out on the ground next to him. One of the Filth players goes over to near where Somerville was lying and mouths the words along the lines of “You so-and-so…”, but not aimed at the victim.

I actually think they were all shell shocked.

I'm pretty sure we will see some sweet deserving retribution during Kb round.

I'll bet Maynard is out though beforehand due to a strained hammy or some other lame excuse.

Laurie was a not a great replacement as sub and racked up even less disposals than Gus. I fully believe that hit cost us a flag birth.

I worked with Sommerville when I was a junior clerk with the SEC in late 1967/68. He never wanted to discuss anything about it. ( It also shows how much the game has changed: his 'salary' at the SEC would have been less than $100 a week...reasonable money in them dark days, when 'men were men' and on-field assault was de rigueur. Sure, we've come along way, but the fact that 60 years later 'disguised assault' - if you played for certain clubs - was still kosher.

Rules that require "interpretation" : unique in the world of sport, and a joke and a travesty.

A sporting tribunal that allows itself to be hijacked by QCs who are granted unlimited time to blather & split hairs & nitpick & run hearings like court cases; also a joke and a travesty.

Good point. Head is sacrosanct, but there is a now a body of work, from Gablett Jr's two-weeks-in-a-row escapes, to Cripps' laughable exoneration (and plenty of other cases in between), and now Maynard, to show just how arbitrary this sanctity is. With the AFL MRO/tribunal jumping through hoops to get these players off.

 

Jim O'Dea, in front of the modern tribunal, might well get off (except for the fact that he hit a Filth player).
