I don't care that much about the Rising Star Award or who gets the weekly nod.

It's little more than a sideshow for me and certainly nothing to get worked up about.

Coincidentally, the three Melbourne players who won the award all subsequently left our club.

common reoccurring theme for winners since the inaugural winner in 93:

  • nathan buckley
  • ben cousins
  • byron pickett
  • sam mitchell
  • jared rivers
  • brett deledio
  • danyle pearce
  • rhys palmer
  • dan hannebery
  • jaeger o'meara
  • lewis taylor
  • jesse hogan
  • jaidyn stephenson
  • luke jackson

all played for two or more clubs

And furthermore the suspension to Reid is a joke that he is ineligible. He is head and shoulders above the others.

This is what really irks me about it. It's not the 'fairest and best', it's the rising star. Suspension should have nothing to do with it.

Unheralded player deserving of some plaudits. He is becoming a versatile and consistent player. I have called him a spud in the past. He is no spud. He actually has a relatively high ceiling. Wiling to concede I got it way off with this guy. I'd even rather have him kicking out than anyone else, he has a thumping kick and makes the right decisions. He has gone from a player I didn't see why they were persisting with, to a player I now wish we had 2 of.

He is quickly finding his feet at AFL level, making quicker decisions and hasn't been caught out trying to do too much.

I still think he has midfield "bull" potential in the future but enjoying his development in the backline.

He was very apt to stop to admire his own or his teammates’ work in the past but that trait seems to have been coached out of him.

I’m not sure about his wont to befriend opponents though.. he’s still often the one holding out an arm to assist a rival regain his feet, or share a gag

Don't worry about Kolt, I asked another couple of players, he never shuts up on the field, gives opposition players the irrits, gets under their skin, also helps him play. A different cat indeed.

His composure with that kick from defence in the dying minutes of the game showed he belongs. That was all class.

Edit - was in last 2 minutes.

And a fantastic contested mark by Sparrow. Great play all round, including Blake Howes.

Howes could have marked a difficult chance - but Kolt was there to mop up. Great team defence. Spaz played a ripper.

mispelt name

The one thing I missed with Kolt early on was his endurance. I thought he was more your FP, HFF maybe push into middle kind of player but he's looking a lot more like a run all day guy.

I'll put my hand up here, I'd completely put a line through him and been very vocal on that front and was a complete list clogger.

This year he's played his role very well and he has shown at stages some of the skills and abilities that other posters here have long been fans of. I don't necessarily think he's done a lot in every game, but he's done a hell of a lot right and justifiably is holding his place in our weekly 23.

Good on ya, matey.

The Kolt needed to find his niche in the team, his coaches trust and his teammates confidence in him, in his first six games this year he has demonstrated his aerobic fitness, his ability to shut down and now playing back, all this with a team first mentality and a bit of pizazz. I really rate the Kolt and so glad that he has lived up to his cred.

King has shown an innate ability to bring out the best in all his young talented chargers a very admirable trait, look at Spaz, Chandler, Howes, Sharp and Kolt just to mention a few, who knows who else is going to come up. I haven’t included Langford, Lindsay or Windsor as I felt they had already shown plenty.

Purely and simply, he is playing the Angus Brayshaw team role.

Now has the ability to plug holes whenever he is needed.

We have seen him as a tagger, wingman, half forward and now doing a great job down half back.

We havent had this type of player since Gus retired.

These guys are so important. Can easily see him becoming a top tier mid/HF in the future.

I also think Langdon is doing his lion share of that.

Tholstrup is a reminder that not all players are ready made as soon as they are drafted.

Not everyone can be Clayton Oliver, Sam Walsh, or more recently, Murphy Reid and dominate matches from day one.

In year three, Kolt is starting to look like he belongs in the team and justifying that high draft selection.

I thought he had a strong game, but I was even more impressed after watching the replay.

High ceiling, strong aerobic traits, lots of power in his movement, pretty reasonable disposal, and seems to be a fierce competitor.

My knock on him has been that he can be flat footed around the contest, waiting to see where the ball goes and what happens and then reacting, rather than anticipating and being on the move. I expect that playing tagging and defensive roles either trains that out of him, or removes the weakness because he is responsible for someone else who is moving.

Really great to see his strong development and performances this year.

Let's not forget his first two pre seasons were a right off with injuries, he's benefiting from a coach who believes in him and finally getting a good run at it.

Absolute credit to Kolt and to King for how he has become a definite best 23 versatile defender who can tag and also hold down a defensive role.

Throw in his powerful and generally accurate kicking notably his last kick on Sunday arvo which both cleared the danger area and found a target - he has I think exceeded the expectations of most.

his kickouts were awful, just banged them long and regularly shinned them straight down the corridor, we were lucky not to be punished the other way mainly due to strong contested marking or guys like kozzy flying in and being clean below knees, wont be the case every week

Was that coined by someone on here? Because today I mentioned the “Kolt-Lock” and he’d not heard it before. No surprise that he LOVES it.
