We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

I just read that McKay’s compo will be band 1, surely they don’t get that and pick 11

An article yesterday made it sound like they'll get the following -

Pick 2 (natural pick)
Pick 3 (McKay compo)
Pick 11 (Priority)

But no Sanders

Teakle has been cut by port,  Don't have to pay anything and can get him as a free agent now.  We should 100% pick him up.

He is only 23 and was ok when he played AFL, just as ruck back up for bottom $$$

Can we throw all our picks at the dogs and ask for Naughton?  They've got too many tall key position players there anyway - they should be playing Naughton or Darcy back in my view.

I can't believe there isn't more heat on Beveridge with the amount of talent he has had at his disposal since winning the flag for very little to show for it - surely there's unrest there?  Naughton can't have enjoyed his foot this year with the way the dogs played.  (Having said that, coming to play in Melbourne's forward line is hardly an attractive proposition!)

Naughton has ability but not a great kick  and perhaps although in the high 40.s slightly  disappointing in2023.

i think i can top you both, beast mode mathieson. he's unreal for culture AND a good leader whos content playing vfl but also wouldn't be a drop off if he was required to play games, he's an UFA or potentially even a DFA and brissies midfield is only getting deeper

a footballing department decision might be elijah hollands however or taylor adams??

Whilst we do need a key forward we also need to look at our midfield.  We have lost Dunkley, and looks like we will probably lose Jordon and Harmes too, as well as Brayshaw's future pending.  Whilst these arn't big losses individually(beside Brashaw if the worst happened) we have taken a hit in our depth in that area.

Do we use our high pick and get a top end pick or get some solid cover from free agency? Lyons, Parfitt, Matheson, are options for pretty cheap and pure cover

That would make sense in a way because the AFL wouldn't have to break the Academy rules to do it and Sanders would be left in the pool which is already heavily diluted by Northern Academy and F/S.

North might even be able pick Sanders with 11 or trade up with it to get him. It kind of has the same effect without breaking their rules.

How about this for a scenario:

- Pick 5 take Nick ‘Wizard’ Watson

- Send 2024 first rounder to Richmond for Tom Lynch.

- Pick 32 to Adelaide for Shane McAdam

- Send Grundy to Sydney for pick 22. Then package up picks 13, 22 & Jefferson to Geelong for pick 7. They can use those picks to regenerate their midfield and forward line in the post Danger/Selwood/Hawkins era.

- Pick 7 take Conor O’Sullivan

McVee May O’Sullivan

Salem Lever Rivers

Langdon Petracca Brayshaw

Watson Petty McAdam

Fritsch Lynch Pickett

Gawn Oliver Viney

Sparrow Smith Bowey JVR ANB Hunter Tomlinson

We only need Lynch for two years.

I've posited Lynch before, but would probably prefer a younger forward like JUH, Naughton, King ahead of him.

Maybe Yze can do us one last favour on the way to Richmond and tell them he wants to invest in youth and Lynch doesn't feature 😉

Seriously though Richmond would be heavily relying on Samson Ryan forward without Lynch. They probably need to keep him for transition.

Unless they see this as their Hawthorn end of 2022 moment or MFC 2010(?). A chance to improve their list with draft picks, so deliberately maim themselves to unearth players on their list and then finish so low, they'd be in line for top 5 picks before Tassie come in. Otherwise, they're in huge strife I reckon.

Their under 22yos are pretty ordinary or untried except for Ryan.

With the likely midfield exodus of JJ, Harmes and Dunstan we need to invest there.

I think it would be a good idea and wouldn't be surprised if we were after Xavier Duursma at Port.  He's been injured, hasn't been playing well and is behind Rozee, Butters, JHF, Wines and Drew, they also have Sinn who has hardly played.  I believe we rated him in his draft year and he showed early on that he can play.  He's stalled.

Port have to acquire Ratugolea, Zerk-Thatcher and Sweet and are reported to be chasing Soldo - all with limited draft assets.  They need some list turnover with their disappointing result yet again.

Duursma is 23y2mo and is out of contract at the end of next year.  Might be a classic buy-low play I think.

I like the look of the below draftees...

Coby McKercher (Mid)

Zane Dursma (Mid/Fwd)

Connor O’Sullivan (Def)

Mitchell Edwards (Ruck/Fwd)

Logan Morris(Fwd)

We should be getting Kynan Brown (Father Son) this draft??

Why not throw this guy an opportunity to play with his brother :Sam Van Rooyen (Brother of Jacob)

They are not getting 3 and 11. Why would they get overs for McKay and then get 11 as a bonus?

I thought it meant they would get 11 instead of 3 for losing McKay, as other clubs were screaming.

Suggestions of a top 10 pick for Tom Lynch are ridiculous. He is a 2nd rounder at best given injury and proximity to retirement.

I think 2024 will be a lost year finishing somewhere in the 6-10 range as we regroup and relaunch for 2025-2026 after acquiring a raft of young players that will require a season or two to acclimate to AFL footy. We should take our picks to the draft and chase pick 4 hard, while keeping pick 15. We should get a 2nd rounder for Grundy and possibly a 3rd rounder for Harmes.

Trade our 2nd and 3rd rounders + F2 to GCS for Pick 4. Word is Doggies are more likely to sneak in front of us ala Geelong style in the 2020(?) draft to pinch Holmes. I feel that a F1 would be way overs and the suggestion is that they need more future picks in 2024 for the next rung of academy players (starting to become a draft pool within a draft pool for select clubs). Perhaps we take future picks for Grundy and Harmes and bias the trade for pick 4 draft with a bunch of 2024 picks. All i know is we need pick4.

Take 4,5,15 to the draft. This should be our objective.

There’s an opportunity cost in pushing hard for silverware in your flag window. Late first round pick is marginally ‘overpaying’ for Lynch (maybe) but would you be lamenting it if it was the move that brought home a second premiership with this group? No.

Jefferson for ‘peanuts’ is not what I suggested. It was 13, 22 & Jefferson for pick 7. Maybe a third rounder coming back our way. There’s also an opportunity cost in gaining access to the absolute best talent in the draft.

Jefferson is a speculative tall at this stage. Some ability there but reality is he’s probably only a 50/50 chance to impact at AFL senior level. That’s just the way it is with young KPP’s. He certainly hasn’t yet shown the AFL ready attributes Van Rooyen has.

No-one’s suggest a top 10 pick for Lynch. Haven’t seen it suggested in the public arena either.

He’d be worth pick 16 - 25 depending on the situation of the club interested and Richmond’s keenness to get picks in and get his salary off their books.

I’d be surprised if we don’t use a top 30 pick on a midfielder this year given we’ll likely take 3 or more picks in that range.

But Im also not too worried by depth at the moment. If Gus needs time away then that changes things but we can wait until at least the trade period to know more about that.

I can see a promotion of some of our maturing players to the level of playing 5-10+ games a year.

Laurie - Dunstan
Taj - JJ
Howes - Harmes

And then a fresh wave of kids coming in behind those guys to have a taste of afl footy if they are ready.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
