Also more comment that question and a topic that's ripe for a Binman rant...

Not unusual by any stretch but how sombre were the commentators once Melbourne got on top late in the third and right through the last quarter? I know a famous Swans victory at home to farewell Buddy was the order of the day but you'd swear they were commentating a funeral towards the end of the game.

They basically laid out on making any comments for some outstanding play eg. Trac's goal and Nibbler's holding the ball tackle and said nothing of the Melbourne effort, strength and determination to win in hostile territory.

Hello gents. Thanks for the brilliant podcast. Your enthusiasm (and sometimes your MFCSS) is contagious and my football weekend is never complete until I hear the panel's dulcet tones analysing the latest game by the Mighty Dees.

On the Sydney game, I was very impressed by our last quarter, but not surprised. We have been finishing well for some time. In the final quarters of the last five games we have scored 16g 18b to 7g 5b. Put another way, we have recorded 34 scoring shots to 12. Only the Crows have pantsed us in the last 2 months when they scored 7g 2b to 3g 6b - but at least we matched them for scoring shots. What I am getting at is that we probably are the fittest team in the finals. We should be confident.  Go Dees! 🔵🔴🔵

I think they and the AFL were mad because of losing on a Sydney home final.

Should we call the Pope? It has been a strife-ridden year in our Forward 50: Ben Brown, TMac, Fritter and Petty all go down at various times and, just when Melky steps up and looks like the answer, he goes down. Fortunately we had a sort of sliding door moment because Fritter stepped in just as Melky stepped out. But then it looked like Fritter had re-injured his foot and it all went pear-shaped for a moment or two. When you throw in the agonies surrounding Grundy in the forward line, and our period of goal-kicking yips, I think we all have to applaud the efforts of Greg Stafford this year. Despite all these problems in the Forward 50 we keep winning. Is he a miracle worker? Should he be beatified? How does Saint Gregory of the Forward Line sound? All we need now is a statue with weeping eyes....   Go Dees! 🔵🔴🔵

Question.

Laurie > Spargo ?

On exposed form... the panels answer is 🤷‍♂️

Consistency is yet to be seen but Laurie may have a higher ceiling than Spargo

Luke Darcy and BT 🙄

Two ‘commentators’ who can’t stand the Melbourne Footy Club. Unsurprisingly how often they get to call our games.

Well done on a great podcast... looking forward to the finals editions at least another 3 😁

My question is without melky in the side playing so brilliantly as a defensive forward who also kicks goals, could Joel Smith play this role as he has defensive capabilities and is talented up forward?

I feel we really need this type of player forward as it's a weapon to be able to shut done the opposition intercepters.

Question for @binman. At some time over the pre season Goody talked about how momentum swings had become such a big factor in games especially in that 2022 season and that they were going to do a lot of work on how to stop them. It's safe to say he's achieved that brilliantly this year. Wondering how you think we are achieving this.

I've been able to see the last two games live. It seemed to me that when Hawks then Swans got momentum swings they did it by moving the ball quickly and often short passing and it was effective at dodging our zone defence and avoiding our contested superiority. I thought we switched from zone defence to man on man and this amongst other things such as extra players behind the ball, is instrumental in stopping momentum swings. What is your view?  If you agree, I wonder what the mechanism is for making this switch during games. Is it player driven or the coaches?

As a side note Pies are masters at the uncontested quick ball movement into uncluttered forward line but we stopped it in the Kings Birthday game and they don't seem to have a plan B if stopped so it looks like it's going to be critical.

the Melksham injury was devastating . he has been a huge part of keeping our decimated forward line together in the absence of Fritsch, Brown, McDonald & Petty and i just feel gutted for him even more so given he missed out of 2021 . given the recovery time and his age i can't help think he may now hang up the boots . just a week ago he would have been a lock to go around again next season .

You boys are consistently knocking each podcast out of the park so thank you for being a big part of my Demon supporting week each week.

Would love to get your thoughts on Disco's game this week as well as your thoughts on Laurie's cameo.

Both showed some very good signs.

Disco for mine is ahead of Tomlinson at the moment so would love to get your take.

Laurie for his part did some nice things when he came on too adding to his good showing last week.

We've added some nice depth late in the season. Do you think either of them will feature in September?

Would be interested to get the panels take on Salem's game this week and I guess an overall take on his form since his return from injury since the Port Adelaide game.

I thought his first 3 quarters were terrible. He couldn't get his hands on the pill. To his credit he lifted his game in the last.

Taking away the emotion and my love for the guy and all of his past contributions and the memory of his exceptional first half in the Granny I would even say he could be on the verge of needing a spell to find form. However we are at the pointy end of the season and with Bowey possibly injured and Hibbo possibly returning from concussion and very little game time in the past month or so I don't think we can afford to do that.

Plus we do know what he is capable of and I hope he can turn it around on the fly.

Love the podcast, thank you, and keep up the great job guys. Some exciting times ahead.

Just popping in to check on Andy's MFCSS levels this week. The Melksham injury is devastating and seeing Bayley hobble off the field and Bowey come off with arm looking like it needed a sling I can't imagine Andy's blood pressure and heart rate was in a good state. I must admit neither was mine.

Love all of your work guys. 5 and half stars.

I know we're not supposed to talk about the Collingwood game this week but surely we can take a moment to talk about the scheduling of the match on the Thursday night. I realise that the match has been scheduled for the Thursday night so that whichever one of the Dees or Pies loses on the Thursday they will play Friday nights winner on the Friday night and therefore give the higher ranked Pies/Dees (hopefully Pies) the extra day break over the Blues/Swans (hopefully Swans) for a matchup on the following Friday night.

However, Thursday night is a horrible night for access to the footy for those like me that live in the country and for the kids who have school the next day.

The AFL and their broadcast partners strike again.

Absolutely gutted for Jake. I listened to your brilliant interview with him and discussing playing on next year. Looks like career is over. Such a sad way to finish up. Unfortunately in all professional sport you have to move on quickly and we need to find a replacement. Who else could play that important negating role?

Thought Disco did enough to keep his spot as the 3rd tall.

Salam very quiet again. Most players a bit sore at this time of year so hopefully the week off helps but is it more the the general (soreness)

Great to have Fritta back I’ve missed looking at his amazing hair! Seriously though, what a player. And well done to the fitness staff for getting his ready to play at that level straight off the bat. How was your MFCSS Andy when he went down yo the room with his foot injury?

Cutting off the questions here. I've got a mountain of work to do to put this all together and I think we've covered off enough to ensure the show is still 2 plus hours even without Changes and the Preview.

Thank you once again to all the contributors. I will give you all the shoutout on the show and in the thread tomorrow.

Good luck on the poddie tonight guys. Sad news for Milkshake and Dunstin. Obvious question is how do we fill the Melksham size hole in the forward line? I think is is time for Joel Smith to step up and play the role. I think Tommy Mack gets a sniff. And it may be time for Grundy to come in for a big game against his old side. Not necessarily as a forward ruck but i think he will be very handy against the wobbles in a couple of weeks.

Thanks once again @Demonland, @george_on_the_outer & @binman.  It’s starting to look a bit like the Milky Way

Sorry if this is my fault, but I tried to listen this morning and it sounded like it was sped up?  Maybe so it would finish sooner? Not sure, and again, could be my fault.

Are you listening through Apple Podcasts? Check that you don't have  1.25x or higher (up to 2x) selected by accident. On an iphone in the Apple Podcast App it is in the bottom left hand corner of the screen when you are listening to the Podcast and the current podcast you are listening is on the full screen.

I will add that it is working at normal speed for me set at 1x.

Also just listened to the source file on my computer and the file that was uploaded was normal speed.

It has to be whatever player you are listening to it on and the player must have an adjustment to the speed levels.

1.25x speed is a good way to listen to cut down listening times. 1.5x is listenable depending on how quickly I'm yapping away. Any higher than that and you're in Mickey Mouse territory.

If you have plenty of time on your hands try out 0.75x speed for a Stoned sounding podcast.

curious about your take on the inclusions of Turner and Laurie so late in the year .  how do you think they make us better than say tommo and spargo?

Laurie had a direct hand in the lead up to 4 or 5 goals in the 3rd and 4th quarter with quick hands and good game sense. He looks to see the game unfold a bit quicker at times.

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
