Who gets an extra week's rest?

We cannot fall out of the four and cannot control how the four finally shapes itself since there is a faint chance of movement above us, so even with the pre-finals bye coming up is there a case to rest anyone next week for an extra spell?

The clearest case for mine is Viney. His form has been terrific but he does have that shoulder issue. Who replaces him? The obvious prospect is Harmes although there may be a case for a debutant, not exactly a like for like (since there is none) but would Howes benefit from senior exposure? I'd like to hear other's thoughts.

Also Bowey's disposal has been off. Maybe he needs an extra spell. Hibberd is the obvious sub. No other defender should go out since Goody likes to keep the unit together.

Gawn is belted every week but seems to thrive on work. If he the fitness crew reckon he could use the extra week then Grundy would love the chance to show what he can do solo.

I hopeLaurie is given another chance. He showed plenty yesterday. Without consulting the replay I remember couple of score assists - handpass for Melkie's first score in the city end pocket and a clever kick under pressure to set up a  last quarter goal, a great tackle in midfield on a bigger opponent and covered plenty of territory, along with a couple of fumbles but he was not alone there.

Salem has some injury

Playing no where near his ability at the moment

Viney is our main extractor.

The closest we have at Casey would be Dunstan not Harmes.  Although i'd probably have the moose as even more Viney like if he was on the list.

Not saying it should happen & only Viney & the FD would know the answer.   It's certainly worthy of a discussion though if the shoulder is serious enough to warrant an extra week of recovery before finals.

An in-form Howes playing somewhere near his best at Casey might get a look in for Salem (even then unlikely as Salem probably has a few more credits up his sleeve) but hasn't returned to play  as yet.

Woe about the only other plausible option for Salem i'd think but not sure how he went yesterday.

Hibb was concussed & unfortunately won't be available for the Swans match.

Seems to have reverted back to his mark / short dinky kick, stop and prop game of 2022 in the last 3 to 4 weeks.

No run or dare at all and some of his kicks are now either turnovers to the oppo or loopy telegraphed ones that end up as hospital jobs where the receiver gets smashed.

Getting to the right places and contesting well but with ball in hand the signs aren't great.   Possibly Hibbo (post concussion) if he doesn't lift from here?

Can you imagine Viney being rested and sitting in the stands? Or even better, sitting in the coaches box with Goody?

I can see him one minute sitting there normally and then the next minute headbutting the glass repeatedly until it shatters.

Given there is a bye already after Round 24, I'd be reticent to rest anyone.  We can't give anyone 2 weeks off and lose momentum.  I'm thinking more along the lines of who do we drop for Fritta next week.

2 weeks off??? It will be 3 weeks between games if rested

Happy to play the rest of them but:

1. Salem is running up and down on the spot right now. He needs the week off and some speed training.

2. We have to at least consider resting Gawn given his value to the side and age. We’ve got Grundy to use if we need him.

Salem may have a slight niggle so could be rested but some speed traing for a couple of days isn't going to do anything for him.

Highly doubt Gawn being rested.

Injured and out for the rest of the year, alas.  He was on the verge of senior selection too, it was reported.

He's had terrible timing with his injuries, poor guy. Not the first time he's been injured when on the cusp of selection.

    GAMEDAY: Rd 16 vs Brisbane

It's Game Day and the Dees are deep in the heart of enemy territory as they take on the Lions in Brisbane under the Friday Night Lights at the Gabba. Will the Demon finally be awakened and the season get back on track or will they meekly be sacrificed like lambs to the slaughter?

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the

GAMEDAY: Rd 15 vs North Melbourne

It's Game Day and it very well could be the last roll of the dice for the Demon's finals aspirations in 2024. A loss to the bottom side would be another embarrassing moment in a cursed year for the Dees whilst a win could be the spark they need to reignite the fire in the belly.
