What's the height difference between them?

I thought Jim Stynes was close to 200 cm...

Yep, bit misleading that photo. Only 9cm difference

But no one has come near Max for having the biggest impact on the club.  To play and lead as he has done is the single greatest football story in the clubs history. A full culture change in an 18 team comp culminating in a 57 year drought breaking flag and then to maintain the standard is by far the biggest mountain we have climbed.

Thanks Max!

  • Aaron Davey the quickest
  • Greg Healy the slowest
  • Brett Lovett the most underrated

  • Brian Wilson the biggest hips
  • Darren Bennett the biggest kick
  • Allen Jakovich the most mercurial
  • Rod Keogh the best Ressies player

Young George Gawn is not quite two years old but is reportedly already taller than Charlie Spargo.

Demon fans should also be rapt than George's middle name is ... Oliver!  (Nickname GOG?)

Where I’m from if your name is George you get called Dod, or Doddy.

In my mind he is an absolute unicorn, and difficult to place in the rank of club greats.

Best ruckman for tap work - yes (just beats Peter Moore)
Best ruckman for mobility - no (Stynes was a freak)
Best defensive mark - yes
Kicking/handballing/ ground ball - no
Biggest heart - yes, equal with Stynes, Flower, T Viney and Jones. I don't remember Barrassi at the Dees.

But for me it is the influence of his CHARACTER. Everyone loves him ,the players play with him and for him, he is not a d**khead in any way, he speaks with a disarming honesty to the media, and he accepts the quirks of his own story and personality. All these traits combine is some strange spiritual form of leadership that is magnetic and powerful. He is a rare gift in footy. Cotchin changed captaincy and his impact at the Tigers is greater than that of Hardwick. I feel Gawn has had a similar impact at the Dees.

Well done big Max - here's to 200 games, and hopefully another Cup or 2!

This crept up on us. I hope he gets the kudos that he deserves and a bit of media coverage.

His 200th match this week and richly deserved with the injuries he had to overcome early on in his career. a premiership captain, All Australian and B&f winner and most importantly a good bloke.

Well done skipper and  I hope we get the win.

Here's some merchandise from the club email to celebrate it. https://shop.melbournefc.com.au/gawn-200/?spMailingID=9824151&spUserID=Mjg4NTYxMzIyNzkzS0&spJobID=1800275706&spReportId=MTgwMDI3NTcwNgS2

Oh and it's Alex Neal-Bullens 150th to.

I was at both of their break out games.

I sat in the players stand at Kadina Park the day Gawn come of age and and when Nibbler kicked 3 and Jones and Vince put on a clinic and we spanked the cats on Corey Enrights 300th!

I recall, back when Goldstein was far and away the best Ruckman in the League, Max made the statement that he wanted to be as good as Goldstein (or words to that effect).  At the time, I thought yep, that's a nice thing to aspire to, not really, deep down, believing he would ever achieve it, and kinda thinking he was just biting off a bit more than he could chew.  At the time, he was just an average Ruckman, and to effectively say you were gonna become the best was a stretch too far.

Guess what!

He did it.

And, then, he just kept on getting better & better & better!

From where he came from, with his slack training, poor habits and knee recos, what he has achieved is truly remarkable, and he deserves all the plaudits that he gets!

Well done Maxie!!

Bit late to this, been a bit withdrawn from DL this week.

This is a terrific milestone. In the 126 years of VFL/AFL history our club has had 26 players with 200 games or more. If you'd told Max or anyone after that second ACL that it was all going to turn out like this you'd be sent to the looney bin.

The best captain of this club that I've had the privilege of seeing. The skinny ruckman that Jimmy saw something in that he didn't even see in himself at the time. The words from Jim: "This guy is going to be different, he's going to challenge the status quo" you don't have to use too much imagination to know exactly Jim would would have said this.

Not a religious person but if there was ever a story that just might have been fate, this was it.

Doesn’t surprise me that stat. Some would think he lost more games, younger fans would think he won more games.

Nathan Jones played in over 200 losses…

Well done to Max for staying himself and becoming a champion. One the best 3 players I have seen in red and blue. The other two also playing on the weekend…

He barely played in his first 6 seasons so the stat isn't surprising when you think about it.

We have so much to play for, but max's 200th should be the icing on the cake.

Expect a huge effort sunday afternoon.

What I do expect for Max this coming weekend (200th) is a little bit of overdue umpire protection for the bashing and physical abuse he has endured over the years. It must stop, here and now. Congratulations, Max, we hold you in absolute awe.

Probably one of the greatest ruckmen of the modern era too.

Don't agree with the "Probably one of" bit.

He's the best ruckman I've ever seen and that includes players like the Maddens, Dean Cox, Sandilands and Naitanui.

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    TURNAROUND by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons won their first game at home this year in the traditional King’s Birthday Weekend clash with Collingwood VFL on Sunday in a dramatic turnaround on recent form that breathed new life into the beleaguered club’s season. The Demons led from the start to record a 52-point victory. It was their highest score and biggest winning margin by far for the 2024 season. Under cloudy but calm conditions for Casey Fields, the home side, wearing the old Springvale guernsey as a mark of res

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
