Contracted Tomlinson Looks to Move On?

If Tomlinson leaves, I presume we'll target an experienced defender as depth.

Agree.  We would have to. Daniel Turner is promising but doesn’t have the size and is more of a backup for Lever.  Adams and Kye Turner are very raw and skinny. At least 2 years away.  Tomlinson provides cover for Petty and May.  He’s done well when played this year and would attract attention on the market if we decided to move him on.  If so, we would have to get another mature bodied big defender as a backup with May being 32 at start of next year and Petty picking up a few injuries this year.

Is is it possible we and the media overrated his performance against Collingwood?

At the time it appeared as though it was one of the stiffest omissions of recent memory. Maybe the coaches weren't satisfied with his performance and didn't have the confidence to continue with him irrespective of Petty who was injured at the time.

He'd slot in really well at North as one of their key defender if he's got the stomach to digest a 3 to 5 win season.

It's not possible that Tommo's form  was overrated on KB.

Yes it was I believe his best all round game for us as we got drive from his game not just defence. 83,000 plus saw his game and he is at the moment after that and at Casey at the top of his game.

Not a great selection decision to drop him ( one of Goody's worst in fact) and Petty should have been eased back in with a Casey game and CHF on his and our minds! Where has thjs experiment gone without a full blown chance of success? And why ?

Therefore Tommo commands consideration as an AFL standard defender great back up and up there with May Rick and Petty as he can handle a key position say on Hawkins, Lewis if need be and perhaps Casboult.

Unfortunately Disco can't play that role but is Levers back up or a HB flanker intercepting. Try he Suns game proved that even though it appears harsh on Disco at this stage.

One of the posters here has said he wouldn't lose any SLEEP if Tommo was not with us next year. Well I think most thinking Dees fans know he would need replacing especially if we want Petty to still try as a forward. For the very reasons above Tommo is needed when we are serious about our depth and a quality defender available. Name who can replace him?

No one whether you are awake or asleep!!!  Jed Adams May in 12 mths time if he builds his frame but not this year at this stage of his development.

So it's great that Tommo is back and actually I won't lose ANY sleep if he is asked to mind one of the Crows talls but I sure would if we didn't have him.

PS Joel Smith in certain circs May be up to it but I don't think we can be sure yet to rely on him on the bigger KP giants that are looking for goals.

Tomlinson would get a game every week and Grundy can get number one ruck and we could get Harley

Guess our looking at another defender is not such a big  deal if we snagged Harley Reid. Maybe Brodie could play CHB if needed!! Hold on we would need a replacement for both wouldn't we?

Ben McKay and one of the DeKonings looks alright! No Worries! Plus Harley.

Neither of those guys would ever entertain going to West Coast. They are both at the stage of their careers where they want success.

Given Barass seems to be open to leave WCE I'd be surprised to see Thommo get much more interest than last year

u know the ruck merry-go-round. well now we have the Key defender merry-go-round and the inside mid go round

Barrass, Sav, Clurey, Tomlinson, Doedee, BMckay, Himmelberg, DGB all floated as available or on the move in some capacity

Crouch, DevRobertson, Mathieson, Dow, Macrae, Shiel, Parfitt, EHollands, Harmes, JJ

all move for opportunity and then fill the spot of someone else to be depth elsewhere, tommo will leave but someone will come in to replace him in the squad unless they back in Smith, Adams and KTurner

Tomlinson held us together at times and was pretty calm under fire. I thought he was in our best six.

May did not play with his normal purpose and steely focus ,same with Lever, although the latter improved a bit in the second half.

Good on Adam yesterday l would be sorry if he goes. When called to step us he usually does the job.

Absolutely.  I had Tomlinson in my votes. Solid. Made the right decisions.  Only one fumble but otherwise surely handling.  Bodied out Fogarty in many marking contests who just him twice on the lead when we had turnovers.

I think the Crows would be an option for him if he decides to leave. They’d be interested in someone of his experience.

I have no issue if he stays in the side for the rest of the year.

We are undefeated since round 1 2021 with the May/Lever/Tomo combo. Yes you didn't read that incorrectly. Undefeated.

Can we trust Petty to get through a final without getting injured? He's definitely one of the more injury prone players on our list.

With that being said, I think it's pretty obvious that Petty will be replacing Tomlinson at the earliest chance.

Surely after Sunday he stays!! He is contracted and we should hold him to it and PLAY him! Apart from anything else, in a team where our disposal is iffy, his is a real plus 90% of the time. I love the idea of him, Salo, McVee all distributing out of the backline.

Keep him, Petty is somewhat overrated on this site, still being judged on 2021 form, has dropped off somewhat also keeps getting injured.

If Ben McKay is worth first round compensation, then that's what Tomlinson would be worth too if he was to leave. Fact is he's achieved more, is in better form and is more durable than McKay. I'm being sarcastic obviously, but also shows the insanity that Ben McKay is worth anything more than third round compo. Legitimate lunacy he's being considered worth first round compo.

Tommo has been really good this year. He was again our best tall defender on the weekend. We seem to play better with him in the team as opposed to Petty. Lever and May are able to free themselves more when Tommo is there. Perhaps he makes them walk taller or feel more confident take risks.

Petty has obviously struggled with injury, but Tommo has outperformed him in every way and deserves to stay in the team. Petty needs to earn his spot through the VFL now as he's been poor this year and is being stubbornly selected off past reputation at this point.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
