Watched the game with my wife and our 3 day old daughter, Remi, in a private room in the mat ward.

It’s fair to say I will never ever forget this game.

We had absolutely lost that game, until we won it.

Melk’s mark and goal was immense.

Signing up Remi as soon as I finish reading some of the threads here - she’ll be a Demon for life.

Great to see you on here Ronny. Congrats mate.

We were taking the banner up the race ready to raise it. I was carrying a ‘grounding plate’ one of the two metal plates that spike into the turf into which the giant banner pole is inserted. This thing weighs a tonne and is very unwieldy. We never go onto the ground until every player has left the field after warmups. We were stopped at the top of the race and were told there was a player still on the field so we had to wait. That player was Melksy. Choco was directing him where to take set shots from and watching him intently. A couple of my comrades were antsy coz time limits and extremely heavy gear. Despite my arms and back screaming blue murder, I turned to one comrade and said, “All good, we don’t wanna rush Melksy. Him nailing his set shots tonight really matters.” My comrade did point out that I was just saying that because it was Melks, and he’s probably right, but I’m claiming it. I’m taking the credit.

Y’all are welcome 😂

exit: also saw Chin and Brodie pregame in the race with some trainers. They were all in really good spirits. I yelled out “hey Chin!” and he laughed and waved and said, “hey! How’re goin?” The mood was awesome.

The goal from Viney was the single most important turning point. His will to compete and win is outstanding. A great leader.

Probably correct call chook BUT.

That mark by Melksham on the wing members side final quarter surrounded by 3 lions was extraordinary. I believe it lead to the Pickett running goal.

Could easily have been game over if not for that absolute brilliance. Thankyou Jake!

Petty was on Hipwood as much as Lever early, and that’s a pretty normal Hipwood stat line.

5 intercepts is a bad day for Jake. 80% efficiency isn’t a surprise when you don’t take any risks or provide any drive with the footy. 189m gained, that’s very ordinary.

Lever repeatedly won key 1v1s. Way off here, DS.

Jake, Jake, Jake! Thrilled with his game.

Let's sign him up for another year, he has more to give still.

On a night where lions had over thirty more marks, Melksham was supreme as our best marking player.

Ten marks in total with five contested. Instrumental link in Kozzies third goal. His leads were good too. A fwd who knows his craft.

A power marking fwd is what we have just so simply had missing.

As for Grundy, he must play solely as a fwd, if he plays. I would say him in place of either Jvr or Bbb. I'd guess the former but it's not a given. Jvr is good but still very much developing. I don't want Max run into the ground carrying such a heavy load so maybe Grundy has to come back for 20% of the ruck and then play fwd. The only problem with Grundy fwd is his marking.

We continue with Milk even when Fritta comes back.

We have been so top heavy with smalls. Spargo is there to score and he's simply just not performing in that role. He could go out for Fritta.

Smith is the penultimate sub. He can play fwd or back and athletic enough to play most roles.

With Trac playing fwd can we please rotate Rivers and Salo through the middle more.

Tomlinson must come until Petty is 100%

Go dees!

Disagree, Goodwin keeping Petty on nearly cost us the game. Be very clear the players win this game not the coaches.  I have been a consistent Melksham detractor as he consistently goes missing. The perfect sub imo

Everyone is IGNORING the FACT that Hipwood has his arm around Lever's neck!!

It was a free kick every day of the week. And yes it was a mark to Lever in any case

I’ll have to watch the replay but I think the umpire paid the free (which was blatant IMO).

Brisbane has such a soft draw to close out the season

Weird thing to say given we don’t have any other top 8 sides left on our run home.

It was Lever who had the majority of that ball in that final contest. It hit Levers chest first .

How about the contrast in celebration between Viney and Melksham for their respective goals.

Viney gives a couple of low fives, nods to his teammates and strides back to the middle. Already focused on the next play.

Melksham goes straight to the Dees fans with fist in the air. Wants the adrenaline shot and buzz from the roar and interaction with the crowd. No less focused on the play by the time it resumes, but needs that kick of energy first.

I love both. Neither are right or wrong, just indicative of different player personalities.

To be fair, we still had to get one more after the Viney goal and I think they knew there wasn’t heaps of time left. Whereas Melksham probably thought he kicked the sealer, which he did in the end.

Oh right, gotcha! I thought you were referring to the cheersquad and the lady was WCW 😂

I'll definitely be trying to get on over to that side of the ground in future, last night we snuck into M50 in the last quarter as I could see there were plenty of vacant seats but that's a reserved seat area - is M52 reserved seat or reserved bay?

M52 is reserved seats. Too many oppo fans just waltz in  and sit in the empty seats. MCG staff do a lousy job at checking tickets or memberships. But the Make Some Noise lady is a hoot, she will approach the oppo fans and ask if they have a ticket for the seat. When they can’t provide a ticket she kicks them out and if they refuse she then calls security.

I’ve met WCW and they could pass for twins 😂

Going from deeply concerned that we had no answers and looked impotent for 2 quarters to what unfolded felt very similar to this time in 2021. Didn’t seem to happen in one game in 21 but there was a similar journey as the season came to a close. Suck eggs Zorko. Gawn finding some form, petracca kicking goals with ease, rivers continuing on with his year as well as Viney. Maybe that was the game to get kossie going offensively, he seemed to find his way into it. Having an Oliver and petracca less midfield for large chunks of games recently and still competing in there is a big find for the back end of the year. Helps find a place for Gus and gives the forward line an edge with petracca going nuts while his opponent tried everything that is well beyond illegal in this game

True, although Melky celebrated his previous one similarly - and I’d say with 33s on the clock after the last goal, the game was far from sealed.

Interesting hearing Goodwin and one or two players mention after the game about engaging attack mode when we really needed to score at the end.

Footy games these days go in big momentum swings, much like how NBA games go. Would love our leaders on the ground to be in a position to call for us to engage that attack mode during games when we have the momentum. That is the time to cash in and at times I think we could get the 25 point buffers that we regularly seem to build out to 45 and break the oppo. I think it would also result in our forwards getting better looks and building confidence.

Not going into attack mode is what cost the Saints flags in that 2009-2010 period...they dominated games only to keep their opponents within reach by sticking with the ultra defensive method. Same for Freo a few years later.

Add Attack mode to Viney's Beast mode and voila!

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
