I believe there are 3 cases to be heard.

If JVR is last it could be late night on Demonland.

it's 4 cases now, uncle. extra one from sunday's games

I remember years ago, giving character evidence at the Tribunal, for a Demon who punched an opponent in a Reserves GF.

I told the Tribunal I was extremely disappointed with his action and that it was totally out of character and that I had made my feelings known to the player before the hearing.

The Tribunal said it was going to suspend for 4 games, but because of my strong character evidence, reduced the suspension to 2 games.

Pretty good result we all thought.

Hey Red, I have this parking ticket would you chastise me and then mention I'm a good chap?

Neil 'Hangman' Busse - or before your time? Busse may have only presided over senior cases.

No, you have no right to just blatantly throw something out there that makes me feel this old. I’m getting my QC.

Which Queen?

just saying that we have been poorly treated by the mrp/mro over the journey yet we make less fuss than our contemporaries and rarely appeal.  there's a perception that we just roll over too easily

I wonder what the facts actually reveal??? I suspect most the the paranoia on 'Land is baloney.

Coincidentally, it's 8 years to the day since the successful Viney appeal.

My apologies. I was wrong.

It was actually 9 years ago. It was in 2014 - remember those glorious times? Viney's successful appeal was probably the highlight of the year.

I was reminded of those glorious days by the North-St Kilda match on the weekend. It was like watching Melbourne play Melbourne.

Common sense will prevail here. JVR will get off and be available for selection this week.

I think the converse is true. The AFL changed the system from a panel to one person to overcome concerns about  inconsistency. I'm not sure having a single person eliminates inconsistency - it just removes the argument that any inconsistency was due to having multiple people involved.

In fairness I believe the MRO outcomes are largely predictable, consistent and relatively easy to understand and compare. I also don't mind incidents such as the JVR spoil going to the tribunal on appeal as the MRO grades based on what they see and leave it to the club to argue whether JVR was trying to spoil the ball vs strike the player. While interpretations have changed and the panel may have taken the easy way out when it comes to Brownlow eligibility and finals in years past I think the system has been really good for at least 4 or 5 years now, at least to the point where I could not imagine how a better system would operate. For what it's worth I cannot see the JVR suspension being upheld on appeal but if course we will find out tonight.

👍

Prosecution: “We would like to call our first witness, Jason Dunstall, impartial expert who witnessed the event.”

Tribunal: “Case dismissed, no penalty”

From all the comments by the so called expert commentators and those on 'Land, it seems to me that the AFL, to save face, should withdraw the charge. There was no sensible basis for charging van Rooyen.

and then we'll probably rest him 😅

Which probably would be a good move. He is not setting the world on fire albeit I reckon he will be a very good forward for us. Getting hands on ball but not holding them. Young key forward played plenty of games in a row and must be feeling a few niggles here and there. Week off, rest up and come back in the next game.

For those that want to plan dinner tonight around JVR's hearing.

Geelong (Brad Close): 4pm

Melbourne (Jacob van Rooyen): 5:15pm

Carlton (Nic Newman): 6:30pm

Hey, please keep that between you and your bedroom 😋

He was holding the back of his head.  So it wasn't the spoil that hurt him, it was when he hit his head on the ground.

Common sense and AFL in the same sentence?  What planet are you from.  Even less so from the star chamber tribunal.

stinga - there was no contact between JVR and the back of his head.

He ran into Kozzie's leg earlier (though of course Koz didn't get the free for low contact) - maybe had GC$ followed concussion protocols he should not have even been on the ground.

I'm not so set on JVR, as he is being scapegoated. It is the inconsistency that concerns me. I also assume that concerns the players as well.

If they are serious about reducing brain damage, then he shouldn't hit the player with such force

You can't tell players to go at less than 100%. It's a tough game, players will get hurt - it's unavoidable.

The vision released from behind the goals really does make this charge look like a farce hopefully some sanity prevails, and the lad is free to play this week.

Yeah he was pretty up about it on radio last night.

And so he should be it was clearly high and clearly high impact

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.
