Plenty has been said about trading and deficiencies in our existing players. Every player has strengths and weaknesses and I wouldn't trade them just on that basis. Barrassi always said that each season you have to find at least 5 % improvement in yourself just to stay at the same level. Trading out isn't solving the problem in some instances it is bringing in an unknown problem. Remember that quote about known unknowns etc.

As I see it we have lots of contested beasts who aren't really good kicks. Hawthorn stacked their premiership teams with left footers down back who could lower their eyes or kick long to position. We are deficient in that area. Buddy was never very good over head so they didn't bomb it to him but kicked it out in front or to space. We don't do that or when we do we look a million dollars. May is a great kick out of defence as is Bowey, Salem used to be. Lever isn't a great kick but is a superb interceptor. I hope Turner comes on as he looks like a great kick. The sort of player who would lift us is Kelly at GWS that is the prototype player we need to get.

If we cannot trade for no 1 get 3 first round kids in and develop them. Don't forget this year Roo, McVee, Laurie & Woewodin all played their first game and Chandler was like a first year player

Well said Kelly would be my dream recruit insofar as what we urgently need!!! Just about ahead of anyone, although Walsh has shot up that list in last week or so, Rozee & Butters have fallen off my list completely.

My dream would be:

— Kelly

— Allen

— Dawson

We should have plenty of salary cap space to go after a big target in the next year or two. While I can't see a "big fish" landing this year, next year has some tantalising prospects out of contract.

In no particular order I'd be looking at:

Oliver Florant (RFA)

Hugh McCluggage (RFA)

Ben King

Aaron Naughton

Tom Stewart (RFA)

Sean Darcy (RFA)

Tim English (RFA)

Have heard a rumour, probably not breaking given where our list is at compared to that of the other clubs that could take him. But he's keen to get to us if we can make it happen.

Which worries me slightly as I've changed my mind on nabbing him. I just can't see how we don't sell the farm to land him and shoot our future-self in the foot whilst doing so.

Is the Reid you talk of?

Great news 4 us.. laughable he’s getting that money w/o injury concern, NOW it’s beyond laughable if he does.

Fact we showed NO interest tells me all I need to know, Lamb, Taylor and co if they don’t like you I rkn that’s a big sign for any club to be worried!

We have no interest in Ben McKay because he doesn't address an urgent need, and we have more pressing issues.

Melbourne couldha had Kelly...

Roos opted for Dom Tyson and Salem instead

We move on

That we didn’t have Bont on the radar at that pick (and likely would have selected Billings had we held the pick) are the bits that rankle.

That said, Salo was excellent in our premiership year and should have been AA. Has not reached those heights since (injury seems to have played havoc with his form), but was crucial for us on GF day.

Gee if Whateley thinks we have 2 years left in this window only, I think it behooves us to heed that.

If we had a static list I would agree with him.

There is only one or two years left in this list, we may even have passed that threshold now.

That's why this draft/trade period is crucial to us and has the capacity to keep us up for longer.

Luckily we have a good hand this year.

Over to list management, and hope they get it right.

Interesting, roos might not get pick 3 after all.

If this is true, I bet the afl just give them pick 3 anyway

I’m still sad this is all I have to be excited about (again) at this time of year. Unless the giants do the needful and destroy the pies’ hearts.

I just keep refresh-refreshing hoping for tidbits from Nudge, Goodwindees etc

Both clubs have an interest in the compensation being less than first round. They could end up missing the player they’re after inside the top 10, especially with the award of pick 11 giving the Roos a big crack at pick 4.

Will some of the money offered be tied up in triggers, and if so, will that impact compensation? There may be a benefit to the two clubs left vying for his signature having a vested interest in that end of the draft.

He’s the one we missed and I still don’t get why else didn’t go hard but it also makes me wonder why.. there’s something brewing that’s for sure but damned If I can find out this recruitment team are extremely tight lipped right now, perhaps we didn’t envisage the cap space and Grundy going but mud suspicion is if he’s not signed 4-6wks later than he was. We’d of come hard!

There’s wasn’t really a time in Larkey’s career when he was out of contract and wouldn’t have had 17 clubs on the phone to him. When we got Brown after 2020 North knew what they had in Larkey and were happy to ship Brown off, there wouldn’t have been a reasonable offer they’d have accepted. Same for this year, we’d surely have offered a boat load of cash and picks, Larkey trusts North’s vision  and if they’re really getting more priority picks it’s hard to blame him. They’d have to fire Clarko and hire Neeld to stuff this up.

Gun key forwards pretty much only move if something unexpected has gone wrong in their career or for personal reasons. Hogan, Daniher, Buddy and Barry Hall up to Sydney, not really all that many move.

I never really hear too much about the draft but I have heard we'd really love to take Zane Duursma.

Though it looks likely he'll be taken before our first pick unless we can slide up.

What about Lynch, Cameron, Lockett , Daniher and there are probably more that I can't think of at the moment.

I am feeling very positive for next year. Some of my takes. Max needs support whether he likes it or not. All teams are going after him and roughing him up with blokes not worthy of carrying his bags. Ruck/ forward or forward ruck needed. Mid needs support and variety whether they like it or not. Love them all but a bit unwelcoming of outsiders, in that they are all alpha males and want prime position game time. Need an extra experienced mid and more time for Rivers and co. Need to get langdon back in form and another wingman. Sounds like we have McAdam so with a ruck forward that line may not be as bad as it looked in finals.

Outside of Reid, he’s the other player I would spend chips to move up for. What Duursma does well translates directly to where we are deficient forward of centre.

Something went wrong for Lynch, the Suns stank and were stripping it down and almost entirely starting again.

I’m still shocked Jezza Cameron moved but it took a rare combination of Leon Cameron being terrible and Geelong literally selling the farm (to him).

Free agency opens opportunities now as players don’t look as bad for sniffing around, but guys are signing 18 months out if they’re happy.

I don’t blame our list managers for not getting a big name. I do blame them for not taking more risk/reward chances searching for someone who can do a job.

You wonder if it's injury risk. 18 months is a long time. Get injured next week and you kiss goodbye to big money.

Should we have an NRL type system where players are signed well in advance of moving.

There's really such little movement other than in fringe players you have to wonder how you break it open.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
