Injured Players

Featured Replies

Spoke very briefly to a parent of one of our players this morning and was told that we went into the finals with 11 injured players. No names.

Heard the same yesterday as well. Would not have played if it was home and away.

This is a slippery slope. We had fit players in the VFL and chose not to use them. Injuries can never be an excuse. We got what we deserved.

Just to add to that, I am sure one of the 11 is Salem who we picked over a fit Bowey. Again, we got what we deserved.

More the fool Goody.

I think we all know who they are.

We all jumped on the Burgo mantra of playing through injury. The reality is we had a shortened pre-season, and players were training a couple of weeks after the flag. We shouldn't have tried to replicate 2021 in terms of player management.

We had a VFL team in extraordinary form, and yet we didn't avail ourselves of these players. Match committee preferred to play underdone players than fit and firing players like Chandler, Dunstan and JVR.

Hopefully this is one of the learnings that Goody is talking about.

But were they injuries or were they injuries?
I imaging nearly every player on every list is carrying “an injury” - I must say I was surprised that it suggeats that 11 others had no injury.

Not 11

Benny Brown going in for surgery.

Problem was we tried to play them through the injuries. Guessing it wouldve been:

Salem

Petrecca

Lever (ankle - had no turning circle/speed)

Gawn

Brown

Jackson

--- more guesses

Petty

Oliver

Kossie - Had strapping on his knee at times.

Sure, but we could have covered a few of them. Maybe 3 to 5?

It’s not surprising but it’s not like they all got injured the week of our final game. Our insistence to continue to play so many players who were clearly below their best when we had a strong list of players playing high quality footy at Casey was ridiculous.

I lay the blame for the second half of the year squarely on the coaches. I thought our playing group gave their absolute all and admirably left nothing in the tank.

Pickett was limping in the final home and away against the lions. Knee strapped.

Didn't seem to have the pace or run the miles late in the season.

That makes nine

Brayshaw had serious strapping on his knee and elbow as well.

It's always been a golden rule of footy to play injured players in finals at your peril.

Got away with it with one player last year. 11 might be pushing it a bit.

Why blame 'Goody' for this? Recall, if you may, that 2021 was a year when, whoever the gods of football are, granted us a virtual free pass. Some on this site believe god was called Burgo. I'd rather believe the god was called Serendipity, the same god who spins the wheels of fate and the result has absolutely zero to with Burgo, Goody, or the fact that Melbourne played with 11 injured players. From what I've read, those 11 players should, according to some, been replaced by 11 fit and able Casey players. Yeah, sure. We lose and Goody gets the buckets of poo poured over him for playing Turner, Van R, Brown, Howes, Baker, Tomlinson, Chandler, Bedford, Moniz-W, Weideman, Laurie, Dunstan and Woewoddin.

I rest my case.

We lost our finals because we were not good enough, not because we had “11 injured players”. Nobody would have played if they were not cleared to play.

Maybe if they were rested earlier they would have been fitter for finals

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
