You give him another pre-season to see if his knee mobility can improve further. His first seven games 2021 were very good, he took over Hawkins from May and held him.

If his mobility improves, gives us great backup and possible option with Petty to go forward.

Thomo, like BBB, runs mostly in straight lines or with the turning circle of the Queen Mary. Struggles with changes in direction big time. I hope to hell that Turner steps up next year because I want Petty to play as a KPF in 2023

I think that's it - if he does a TMac style 2020/2021 pre-season and can get back to his early 2021 form he is definitely a best 22 player. If he can't get there (might be hard to know at this point) then he should be encouraged to seek opportunities elsewhere.

Petty should be played forward regardless.

opportunity would clearly exist for him at a third club

what we get for him would be determined by how much of his wage another club is prepared to take on

Spot on.

he was one of our best players, i for one would like to see him back in our backline and petty going forward, hopefully with another preseason he can recapture his form, or better it.

Struggles overhead and is expensive backup. Best to seek new opportunities. Rather take a punt on a draftee with Smith, Turner even TMac as backup.

I wonder what is best for Tomlinson?

At mfc he is competing with Hibbered, Smith and Turner for a spot.  He can see they have been preferred ahead of him.  So a long year playing VFL awaits him.

If he goes now he is 29 and could convert a one year contract @ $500k to a 3 year contract at $350K.  Next year he will 30 and OOC.  So he may figure it is best to be traded this year.

I note that a poster said that he is preparing for life after football so he may be happy to just see out his mfc contract.

Could be a nice little salary dump for us, 500k isn't huge money but it might free up enough space to go fishing.

I  think that Tomlinson was best in the AFL stat for "one on ones" when he did his ACL in 2021.

Keep in mind the sample size was small.  In effect 6 games before he did his knee early in the game against North.

It’s also a bogus stat, there’s no way Tomlinson only had 2 marking contests a game, so most of them aren’t deemed one on ones, including contests that are really one on ones with a pair of flankers also at the drop. Giving up a mark on the lead or failing to control your opponent in a pack situation can be just as important.

A correction to that info.  He has two years to go on his contract.

Thommo provides great depth and at 195cm provides coverage for Lever and May and helps hold Casey defence together when not needed. Happy to keep him, Turner is more a Hibbo replacement and long term prospect.!!

I really can't see Turner playing on Charlie Cameron and Tom Papley - we need someone else to replace Hibbo. Currently it's Jayden or J.Smith. We need to recruit in this role.

Turner is 194cm and is a key back  in genuine competition with Tomlinson.

His reaction after the VFL grand final win showed a man that's most likely has played his last game in the red and blue.

He clearly wasn't Jimmy Munro.

The way I look at it he is a 500 grand backup which is way to much to spend on a just in case, with Grundy coming in we would almost be square cap wise (give or take a 100-200 grand) if we could have someone take him off our hands

They don't anymore, watch games when guys roll ankles, they have no strapping when getting seen to initially, then get strapped.  Maybe there is some modern physiotherapy reason for it, but they just don't seem to anymore.  Maybe someone can ask next time at training.

Wouldn’t it weaken the ankles over time if they continued to strap them?

If Freo relent and let Lobb go to WB then Tomlinson might form part of the Jackson trade in that WB give Freo a better pick for Lobb instead of giving us a pick for Tomlinson, which in turn 'improves' Freo's compensation to us for Jackson.

We may end up 'giving away' Tomlinson for very little but getting his $500k off the books and enabling the Jackson deal will probably be worth it.

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.

  • NON-MFC: Round 09

Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?
