on field are both great leaders (max maybe more vocal?)

off field, can't go past max

max capt, jack vice capt is a great mix

no need now to even think of changes.   maybe give jack more roles/responsibilities, but that's about it

What makes Max a great leader is how he can relate to players of different age and personality. Jack is more of an on-field "do as I do" type leader.

Our leadership group seems to be made up of different types. Max stands alone, but I think Lever is the closest we have to Max. Jack and May are of the same ilk. They expect perfection to the point of being abrasive. Trac and Gus still need time before they're elevated to Capt or VC. And ANB is good in the leadership group, but long term I'm not sure if his position in the team is assured.

I think Jack is the perfect Vice Captain

He still leads by example in the best possible way, don’t put pressure on the bull

Jack is the model captain of era's gone by. The new bread of footballer is different now and doesn't always respond well to his leadership style, which is built on intensity, focus and uncompromising effort.  As others have said, he makes the perfect Sergeant, 2nd in command. But the captaincy now has a more public profile in addition to onfield leadership, which is perfectly suited to Max's character and leadership style.

When Max retires, it will be between Lever & Brayshaw, but who knows who the playing group looks up to beyond Max and Jack.

i agree, bread is very important for all footballers. roman legionaires marched and fought on bread for centuries.

How could anyone say he isn't one? Crazy.

I know.. dont understand it. Can be a great leader but not a natural captain. Max is a natural captain.

Max Gawn is the best captain in the AFL.

Modern leadership is about a lot more than just performance.

Gawn has the empathy and ability to connect with all types of people, which makes him the perfect leader. He has a unique ability to relate to and inspire everyone, from 18 year old rookies to 30 year old veterans.

Viney is a great player and someone you would love to run out with every week. He would die for his teammates and he never leaves anything out on the field. But his personality would not be everyone's cup of tea, and that is absolutely fine. He is a hard man to please, and it makes him a great player and good leader, but for mine he is not the sort of captain you want in 2022.

I think Lever is our next captain. Incredibly well spoken, well loved by his teammates, great footy brain, and has that same fatherly type figure about him.

Different type of bread in the olden days. Modern day players are more your sourdough and multigrain, compared to your Tip Top white sliced of yesteryear.

Perfect VC, and great on field leader.  Complimentary to Max. Am sure, Maxy leverages JV’s intensity, in moments when he feels the group needs it.

But not sure JV has the different emotional levels and awareness of individual player needs to be skip again.

Hopefully not.  For mine Jack and Lever are great leaders and players but do not inspire when they speak.  It's just cliches and platitudes!  Whenever Max finishes up, I'd rather have Petracca or Brayshaw as the captain.  Viney and Lever can still play an important role as vice or in the leadership group.

Since we're talking about it, what about the captain after next?  Petty?

Keep it the way it is. Viney plays the "Patton" role perfectly.

I think he’ll be captain again in 2024. Maxy will be past his best by then

Viney is already our best onfield leader. His intensity and drive to win is unbelievable. I wouldn’t change it next year though. Max is doing a great job

I never thought it was a good idea giving it to him in the first place, Nathan Jones was our captain and deserved to keep it. Taking it off him a couple of years later proved that it was the wrong decision by the club. I don't think we treated him well in that period

It's a real credit to the bloke that he stuck fat when we were a basketcase and other clubs came circling for his signature. Trac, Oliver and Brayshaw are all being lauded for 'signing for life' (and so they should), but I'll never forget Viney for being the first.

ANB is a hard worker and I'd suspect he is a sponge to the coaches message. When I watch his interviews I can't help but think he's got the same turn of phrase as Goody. I can see why he'd be in the leadership group. Spargo and Pickett talk about him often also so he must be doing something right

Was having this discussion with another Melbourne fan over the weekend over a few beers.

We both agreed that we felt Viney was much better prepared and a bit more mature enough now in easily slotting back into the role.

I'd love to see him slip back into that co-captain role alongside Gawn going into next year.

Thoughts?

Mate, I have not read further past your OP.
You have absolutely ****canned this bloke over the years but now this!

I’m having a bit of crack here bro because I’d like to read your reasoning for this considerable about-face.

Brayshaw will be the Messiah.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session. Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
