    SWEET SIXTEEN by KC from Casey 

    The game was an uneven match up from the very beginning. The Casey Demons, representing an alignment between the reigning premiers Melbourne and the outer southeastern expansion area centred around a sprawling Cranbourne with its rapid population growth and the stand alone Northern Bullants from the inner north who sit at the foot of the VFL table. With 14 AFL listed players and a couple more having experience at the elite level opening with the breeze at their backs, the result was inevitable. The game ended with a whopping 91 point win to the Casey Demons who wrapped up the competition’s minor premiership a month early with their sweet 16th consecutive win for the season. 

    Luke Dunstan got leather poisoning with 41 touches and 2 goals to go with them while young key forward Jacob Van Rooyen came away with a 5 goal haul. However, from go to whoa this was a supreme team effort with individuals dominating and pulling together to achieve the desired outcome.  

    They were naturally at their most dangerous with the wind at their backs. The Demons piled on six goals to nil in the first and third terms and, while the Bullants offered strong resistance in the second, the home side maintained its stranglehold with four goals to one at the end - a tribute to the strong defence led by Adam Tomlinson, Daniel Turner and Jake Bowey who were capably assisted by Casey listers Corey Ellison and Matthew Buntine.

    The swirly winds weren’t conducive to sizzling displays of skill but the Demons mastered the elements as much as was physically possible, The midfield was led by the masterful Dunstan and his assistant Jimmy Munro who took full advantage of the strength in the ruck of the returning Josh Smith who had a great duel with his Bullants counterpart. There was plenty of support in the engine room including from skipper Mitch White and improving youngster Riley Baldi.

    Demon fans would have seen a lot to like from players of the future, notably Van Rooyen who showed special talent with his solid marking in the difficult conditions and his boundless enthusiasm and attack on the football. Bailey Laurie, Blake Howes and Taj Woewodin are also names that can be earmarked for 2023 and beyond. The fact that they can be developed in a successful environment at Casey will be of immense benefit to the players and the club when the time comes for them to step up to the next level.

    A lot can also be said for small forward rivals Toby Bedford and Kade Chandler who kicked five classy goals between them and though he was subdued, Andy Moniz-Wakefield managed an awesome goal in a moment of magic.

    Mitch Brown was as always at this level a dangerous foil up forward with three goals and Joel Smith had some pleasing moments up playing forward on his return from a long lay off with injury.

    The only annoyance for this team is the fact that it has another bye coming up in the lead up to the last month before the opening of its finals campaign.

    JVR is a good young player but he wasn't dominant yesterday. The team was and his goals came on the back of that.

    I actually prefer him as a defender, I think he's not a natural forward.

    We'll see though.

    I just believe his attributes are better suited to that of a key defender.

    He was drafted as a swingman who played both forward and back but I don't see any standout forward craft qualities. He's competitive and can take a contested grab. But his goal kicking and forward craft isn't the same as someone like Cadman's.

    I just think going forward we're better off drafting a natural key forward. That's why Cadman is someone I'd love from this years draft.

    JVR may well play end up staying as a forward but I think he'll end up being more of a Brody Mihocek type. 

    A solid second/third tall who competes hard.

    I've had similar thoughts as well. Watching him last year I reckon he looks more comfortable as a defender and his aggression even goes up a notch. Wouldn't surprise me to see him start his career forward but move to defence down the track, perhaps when May is on the way out.

    Didn’t see much of Howes unfortunately.

    This is the reason why I wouldn't hold my breath on TMc returning for the finals campaign. Happy to be proven wrong though

    If JVR can take a contested mark, and has some grit, I’d say he should continue to be developed as a forward. We have defence covered, but no one who can take a contested mark up forward. 
    Similarly, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Joel smith play in round 23 if he can have one more solid hit out before then. We desperately need some more marking prowess forward of the ball in the finals imo. Going to be too much of an as for TcDonald, surely.

    For sure Homsar. Give Smith one more run and then maybe unleash him, would love to see him be a bit of an ace in the pack.

    With BBB and TMc hitting 30 best to develop JvR as a forward IMO.  At this stage he reads the play well for a tall forward,, can mark well and has enough pace. Doubt he will be a crash and bash forward but that is ok.

    Probably can play forward and back like TMc. I think we have a good player in JvR.

    Quite obviously star forwards are harder to recruit and when you have a world class defence with Disco  and Bowsa still not regulars ( how long till though!! ) and JVR is tracking nicely with all the other Weids BBB Tmac etc either in a possible time warp or confidence crisis let's leave him as a potential star goal kicker. 

    JVR has many good qualities that will Make him develop into a fine footballer and let's see a star light up the G to go with our 6/7 year champion mids in their match winning ways for us to rejoice. Leave the future to Disco etc.down back. 

    PS we can always swing Harry Petty  up forward and JVR down back to change things up!!

      The Casey Demons were always expected to emerge victorious in their matchup against the lowly-ranked Sydney Swans at picturesque Tramway Oval, situated in the shadows of the SCG in Moore Park. They dominated the proceedings in the opening two and a half quarters of the game but had little to show for it. This was primarily due to their own sloppy errors in a low-standard game that produced a number of crowded mauls reminiscent of the rugby game popular in old Sydney Town. However, when the Swans tired, as teams often do when they turn games into ugly defensive contests, Casey lifted the standard of its own play and … it was off to the races. Not to nearby Randwick but to a different race with an objective of piling on goal after goal on the way to a mammoth victory. At the 25-minute mark of the third quarter, the Demons held a slender 14-point lead over the Swans, who are ahead on the ladder of only the previous week's opposition, the ailing Bullants. Forty minutes later, they had more than fully compensated for the sloppiness of their earlier play with a decisive 94-point victory, that culminated in a rousing finish which yielded thirteen unanswered goals. Kicks hit their targets, the ball found itself going through the middle and every player made a contribution.

      Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds. 
      This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
