I think we are cooked. I really do, dont want it to be true. 

As well as players being out of form, i think the coaches are. That was really strange last night.

Think Chandler needs to come in. Obviously Lever. Tomlinson tries, but he is just a shadow of his former self. Steven May thrashed Naughton, but still made bad judgement errors, and watching him closely at teh ground last night, i think he was to demonstrative to team mates, especially Gus, it was pretty ordinary i thought.

Salem is out of whack, minimal impact. Gawn, again he tried, but he was soundly beaten around teh ground, again, coaching is an issue, Jackson should actually have juts went everywhere English did. Trac had some amazing impact touches, but he was quiet.

Jackson is having a very ordinary season. He should take the 1Mill plus on offer and go.

Angus was great, but his turnovers cost us 3 goals.

Im not into the Harmes hate, he tries, you need players like that.

Kozzi was good. Weed was good first half.

Fritsch i thought was great, but defensively lazy at times.

Spargs touches were good, but 10 is simply not enough and it hasnt been enough for teh majority of the year.

Langdon isnt the player since his ribs injury.

Clayton, Jack and Harry - our 3 week to week players you can count on at the moment.

The dream for back to back is over, but lets hope we dont just totally implode.

I think we need to find a way to get Bowey into  that side .

We were badly beaten when the ball hit the ground in the Dogs forward line and we just don’t seem to have that small mop up sweeper

I agree, he was quiet, but right now, i would take Bowey over Salem. Christian is a very good player, but he has not got going at all. I think when he came back it unsettled Boweys role.

Pickett kicked 6 last week and 2 last night. He is inconsistent but he has absolute star quality and is so dangerous, he threatens to take every game apart. I can't see him being dropped.

ANB plays a high coverage, high pressure, link up half forward role. I don't know if Chandler has that sort of endurance or aerobic capacity?

Spargo feels to me like he has been down on form, but I'm not sure if that is just because he is averaging less goals per game? He is actually up on score involvements, goal assists, inside 50s, disposals and marks than previous seasons. I think he is playing higher up the ground than before which is continuing to less goals. That isn't where Chandler will play.

Melksham is most likely as he is the last in the team and didn't provide the obvious defensive efforts last night that he did last week. But he had 9 score involvements from 9 disposals, including kicking 2.1 and a goal assist. That isn't a bad return for a fringe player taking his chances.

When Bedford was in the team, Spargo was playing further up the ground, so I can cut him slack for averaging less goals. But his possession numbers should have dramatically increased, which they haven't. He just doesn't get involved enough, wherever he plays. I haven't been a Chandler fan, but his form at VFL is hard to argue with. He even takes marks on the lead, not that we utilise that option much. He must get rewarded, and Spargo is the obvious one to get dropped.

Well considered. Need to look at through the wider lense, we were up and about for a season and a half, now mental fatigue showing. To misquote Shakespeare: "My kingdom for a one-grab clunker" (up forward).

We really need two talls up forward. If we play with just BB or Weid by themselves, they just get smashed.

I thought we played a pretty good first half. Our forward entries are generally still garbage though.

I think we've got two major problems.

1. We're not as fit as last year

 AND

 2. Teams have worked out how to spread use the corridor and switch play to beat us.

We have the talent, not sure we have adjusted our strategy to counter the switching and centre corridor use by the oppo.

If players are carrying injuries, they really shouldn't be getting selected.

I wrote the following about JVR in the Casey thread:

"JVR was solid in conditions that didn’t suit. His competitiveness, willingness to put his body on the line, and bring others into the play, are all attributes we currently don’t have forward of centre in the ‘ones’. Low possessions, but he didn’t do his chances any harm."

It might be a bit soon, but given our need for another tall forward, I'd take a punt, in tandem with either BBB or Weid.

Geez.  The criticism of Gawn on here is beyond ridiculous.  15 hit outs to advantage is almost unheard of.  25 disposals for a ruckman, 8 marks - 3 contested and a huge number of score involvements.  English is a good player and played a good game and that can happen - Gawn v Goldstein over the years has often seen both play well.  The reason we did so well in centre clearance, and scored so heavily from it was because of Gawn's dominance.  Maybe you couldn't see it on TV (I haven't seen the telecast) but at the ground it was obvious.

He had a great first half but resorted to grabbing it from the ruck or whacking it forward to no one in the last quarter. It was hero ball kind of stuff when we needed composure and to stick to the basics. 
 

That said, he could probably read that Oliver was unable to handball on his right and most of the midfield were running on empty after last week.

Not the time for wholesale changes for me. We were pretty good and unlucky to be beaten by a team which played their best. Lever for Tomlinson would be the only change. The forward line functioned better with Weideman.

I thought Salem lifted in the second half - will improve over time. Sparrow was great in the first half - can’t understand calls for him to be dropped. Pleased for Weed and Melksham, the loss certainly wasn’t down to them. 
Tomlinson and Rivers seem most vulnerable. 
Langdon had a down day and isn’t the same since coming back from injury.

To take on Free as Richmond did and probably should have won you need manic pressure in the forward line, that is currently lacking. 

Free are quick and run it out of the backline if not pressured they deliver it but under Richmond's pressure they turned it over. Again forward line pressure. The Free calls are good overhead and missed Lobb. The last time we played them they killed us in the air. 

Lever must come in and I think it was Petty on Ugle-Hagen and naughty and Bruce were not sited.

I suspect BBB will not be ready and it is a long plane trip. One of the backs must go forward as a marking target and play defensively. The Gawn/Jackson forward combo isn't working well enough.

Lever returns, I would like to see Hunt or Chandler in. I think Jordan may struggle to get up on the 6 day break. Petty goes forward but not sure who else goes out.

Without TMac, and with BBB struggling to impact games consistently, Spargo has been forced to play higher up the ground to offer options. This has resulted in more marks, more uncontested possessions, more inside 50s, a higher kick/handball ratio, and more metres gained, but less shots at goal because on average he is further away from goal than last year.

I'm not sure that swapping Chandler for Spargo fixes this. (As much as I think Chandler deserves a go)

Apart from our default defensive strategy operating at 70% efficiency or less and some players making uncharacteristic howlers, we are in the same position as last year. We lost a close game to the Doggies and had a few of our weaknesses exposed. As frustrating as this is I just don't get the ranting about this player or that.

With 4 rounds to go, all finals aspirants should be shuffling and sifting towards their best 25 players to shape their finals campaign. For me we need to begin locking in our starting structural set up:

• 2 talls as our F50 spine
• Make the call between Bowey, Rivers or Hunt as our preferred 6th starting defender.
• Move Brayshaw back to the wing so that our starting midfield is Gawn, Oliver, Petracca, Viney, Langdon and Brayshaw.
• In almost every game this year, one (or more) of ANB, Spargo or Kozzie have played really badly. IF one of them is to be dropped, Chandler comes in and he stays in like Bowey did last year. 

So for Dees v Freo

OUT: Tomlinson, Rivers

IN: Lever, Hunt

But apart from the structure and personnel I would like to see the burning angry defensive grunt we saw last year possess every player so no more scores against us over 65 points.

I think Salem is suffering because Angus is playing that interceptor/outlet role. JJ is also playing well on the wing which makes it hard to shift gus back there. 

I wonder if Gus could find a place in the forward mid mix, I think his neat disposal could be utilised there.
