Simon was questioned in today's presser about 'the commentary on Daisy's commentary' (and - good on him - dismissed it eloquently and forcefully. And absolutely correctly imv - she is head and shoulders (metaphorically!) above her colleagues).

I wasn't aware of this; nor is Demonland generally, it seems. Can anyone fill us in?

Anyway there isn't even a debate. Daisy is the best special comments person in the game right now. The article says Dermott reckons Wayne Carey is superior, I couldn't agree less. Daisy makes Carey look so B-grade it isn't funny.

Thanks @layzie!

Rex and Dermie.

You can close the thread now, mods.

On content alone and not gender, I find Daisy more insightful than just about anyone. Was Carey the gun of guns, yes he was, but he is also proper FIGJAM and the hoary reminisces he offers doesn't actually give me much idea on tactics, which Daisy does offer. Daisy knows her stuff, gender has nothing to do with it.

Really that is super annoying, if anyone had a link to Simon's comments would deeply appreciate it.

He special comments aren’t great and her high pitched voice is annoying… I think Jones is right up there for special comments

Daisy is so good to listen to. Articulate, accurate and insightful. My brother-in-law can't stand her voice which I just don't get. She is the best thing to happen at the Dees for 20 years (apart from the Premiership of course), the best person to emerge out of the AFLW, and the best thing the channel 7 commentary team have done since Bruce & Dennis were together.

I also actually like the input of W Carey. It's people like Ling, Ricciuto et al whose special comments are simply to repeat the bleeding obvious we can see on the screen ourselves.

Luke Hodge is also a shocker - can’t put 2 words together. Nathan Buckley, I like.

Jones is very good but his high pitched giggling can be annoying.

Daisy is a very solid special commentator.

BT is a mistake riddled commentator and it's an indictment on channel 7 that they hadn't adequately prepared a (Friday night/marquee/AFL grand final) satisfactory succession plan post Bruce and Dennis who both left a legacy as VFL/AFL football's  finest commentators of all time.

Basically Rex Hunt had a go saying Daisy only had a job due to a gender quota. Talked up Wayne Carey as a superior commentator and that Daisy stole his spot on Friday nights due to her gender. It’s lead to a swell of toxic support online from some seriously sexist and brain dead people, if you can even call them that.

Rex is obviously an out of touch old fool. Daisy is one of the most insightful commentators going around. She provides better insight into what’s happening in the matches than most other commentators, especially the blokes old boys club types. She understands the modern game better than players from 2-3 decades ago who spend the matches beating their chests and the best insight they can give is getting a players name correct.

You’re best off ignoring the rubbish online if you have any semblance of humanity left. Some of the stuff said about Daisy has been disgusting and shameful.

Some commentators describe whats happening but Daisy describes why it is happening.  Simply the best.

That's not quiet correct. Try sticking to the facts which are on the public record.

He suggested Daisy let Carey get a word in. Then he also suggested networks were employing women on the basis of their gender not their ability.

I guess its matter of taste.  There have always been good & dreadful commentators.

I like Daisy. Rex is even worse than BT.

Watched the Goodes doco on Netflix recently and Dermie said some things back then that haven't aged well. His views on Daisy are also a decade or 2 behind the times.

Goody summed it up well.

Unfortunately there are a lot of people who just can't see past their prejudices (read some of the facebook comments) and actually believe Daisy has no idea.

Good on Simon for setting the record straight...she is enormous and an absolute trail blazer.

The game is the better for Daisy.

Listening to Rex on the radio was shocking, you’d have no idea about the score or even who had the ball, was all about bluster, BS, and  nicknames. It was terrible when no other stations were calling and you had to listen to him.

BT is the modern day equivalent, really embarrassingly bad, but some people must like him, and it takes all types.

Carey & Dermie are very good when talking about playing as a forward, but don’t provide much insight on current day strategy.

Daisy is a star, articulate, explains what’s happening and why. This would be to complex for Rex to understand and why he doesn’t like her! If she added in an Abletttttttt or Yibbydeeeyabbydee, he would appreciate her more!

Daisy is very easy to listen to and genuinely insightful.
Jones is just not suitable for it, he's not very articulate and is not easy to listen to in longer spats.
Dermott is painstakingly horrible and is one of few commentators that I actively mute/don't listen to his commentating.
Carey is decent, speaks well enough and conveys his points.

Other ones who have recently stepped into the role;

Dangerfield is not great and I would tend to tune out/mute in longer parts.
Jack Riewoldt can't articulate that well (same as Jones) and doesn't contribute anything super substantial.

Just when you think we are getting somewhere as a society, I read the hundreds of comments on these articles online. So disgusting. Bagging Daisy and Kelli - stay out of our game etc. I won’t repeat the rest of the tripe.

Why is she being hired by the Cats then you morons?!

Daisy is a gun and dead set legend

Daisy is OK.  Doesn't do a lot for me, but there are plenty worse.  She does have some good insight.  She wasn't selected on merit, more-so her sex, but it is what it is and she's shown enough in the role to suggest she's not misplaced.

Garry Lyon annoys me the most, because he never shuts up.  He must be paid by the word.  He also repeats the same point so many times.  I have to mute it.

I'm also not mad on Nathan Jones.  But he'll get better.  It would be daunting in your first year.  With experience I'm sure he won't sound so subservient.

Kelli Underwood is easily the worst caller I've ever heard.  The voice and hackneyed cliches are the pits.  Thankfully, she gets the graveyard timeslot.  Once again, she's not calling based on merit.

Oh for meritocracy.  But it's not the world we live in.

Clearly ^^^ dubdee will have a conniption at my comments.  C'est la vie.

I agree that Kelli is terrible. She chooses to screech in Strine, one cliche after another. On the other hand, I have previously started to separate threads, at times, about how good Daisy is. I am still cross at the club for letting her go to Geelong as a coach when they should have kept her here.

Rex Hunt is an old fool, was a terrible commentator who was unlistenable, and I have always assumed his name is rhyming slang.

Why would he suggest that Daisey let Carey get a word in when they aren't on at the same time.

He either hasn't listened to the telecast or is saying stuff, which is critical of Daisy, just to make his comment sound valid when it is a fabrication.

  • WHAT’S NEXT? by The Oracle

What’s next for a beleagured Melbourne Football Club down in form and confidence, facing  intense criticism and disapproval over some underwhelming recent performances and in the midst of a four game losing streak? Why, it’s Adelaide which boasts the best percentage in the AFL and has won six of its last seven games. The Crows are hot and not only that, the game is at the Adelaide Oval; yet another away fixture and the third in a row at a venue outside of Victoria. One of the problems the Demons have these days is that they rarely have the luxury of true home ground advantage, something they have enjoyed just once since mid April.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

  • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
