All our forwards show intense defensive pressure when they don’t have the ball: if Weed doesn’t find this he will not progress. Sadly. He has good skills. 

I haven’t seen the game yet, but it may be worth noting that Weideman had the most tackles of any player for Casey today.

No it's not what Weid does it's how he goes about it, for christ's sake we did beat, a side that's won two games I would like Weid to succeed but he needs to attack the pill as if he is going to hurt someone and chase the same when he is not in the contest.

The afl website had him for one tackle. Bedford had 6

I don't know about others, but when I'm watching Casey games, I'm looking at how a players' performance translates at AFL level. All the observations about Weid were fair. He's still not strong at the contest. His second efforts are poor. Why do you think that Tmac has been preferred?

Anyone who watched the game would have come away thinking that JVR is more worthy of promotion than Weid.

Watching the 1st episode of the AFL draft show on Netflix Dunstan wasn't getting a real lot of interest from other clubs.

Weid mighta just backed himself to get infront of Tmac and play with his mates in a premiership side.
Seems his teammates love him as they tend to get around him when he plays well.
Reckon they want him there.
 

I've heard enough. Bring in Weid and make him captain.

Thanks KC and all posters, that was a great win by Casey and another great percentage booster. I am getting seriously bullish about our depth players and newbies.

Doubtless because people had high hopes for him and he is yet to deliver at that level.

Don't disagree on that, but if those people haven't readjusted their expectations by now then that's their problem.

Had a good game today, hope he takes some confidence from it.

Weideman’s career is tracking similarly to Taberner from the Dockers. He’s a good player but won’t ever be a superstar. 6 goals and 20 disposals is a good game in the wind even if North is a rabble. 

Watched the whole game at Arden Street - first personal look at the VFL side this season. Notwithstanding the quality of the opposition, the things that stood out to me were:

- JVR: echo much of what is said here. Has speed, hits up hard, good below his knees, plays a team game with smart handball, watches the ball, competes strongly whatever his position in the contest, good smarts, hands and nice kick. They may want to have a look at him at senior level if he can produce consistently. Definitely excited about this guy.

- Bedford: everywhere, linking up, tackling, and the blistering speed, plus some good finishes - too good for this level.

- Dunstan: also too good for this level, doing in on the bit - excellent in traffic and good disposal (the knock on him at St Kilda)

- Weid: On the positive, worked hard (as always), crumbed a few, and noticeably, to me at least, he was launching in packs - if he could clunk half the ones he gets good hands on he would be a champ, plus still pushed off the ball a bit too easy, although not as much as last season. Its the same knock on him... Not have Mitch Brown in the forward line gave him much better looks IMO.

- Laurie: agree with the Spargo comparison but probably quicker, cleaner, better kick? Very skilled.

- Majak: had a picnic today, sentimentally, be good to see him get a game at AFL level, but obviously not as a result of injuries to Max or Jackson - a rest for Max at some stage???

- Woewodin, Deakin Smith, McVee, Rosman all did some good things.

Noticeable overall was the tackle intensity, strength around the ball. At the last huddle Corrigan was continually reinforcing the 'play your role' mantra.

Who is Mac Andrew?

Zero second efforts is unnecessarily harsh re Weid.  Indeed one of his goals today came from just that.  Im not a huge fan of where he is in his seventh season but he was involved around the ground, bagged 6 and certainly played his role.

I think this will be development year at Casey for JVR.  With TMc and Ben Brown contracted until end 2024 and both in their 30's easily by then best to ease him in. No rush.  Another good pre season will see him in good stead for a few games or more nest season.   The club long term would be looking at him, Luke Jackson, Weid and Fritter to be the base of our taller forwards going forward. Fritter plays small and tall.

No doubt we will be looking at recruiting another over the next couple of years.

Yep, once he has the fitness i think Laurie might be edging Spargo out of the side.

I watched majority of the game.

There has certainly been some commentary around Weids game compared to Van Rooyen. 

From my perspective, today was Weid just being in the right spots at the right time and took his chances when it presented in front of goal. Though, there were times he could have taken an easy contested mark against a much smaller opponent, but yet his greater weakness was evident and failed to take advantage of this once again. Like he would fly for those marks and you'd think it would be an easy mark but it just either bounce off his hand or he'd attempt a double grab.

I tried to watch for more defensive pressure but it was a bit non existent except for one act which resulted with a goal.

Van Rooyens game was complete opposite to Weid. One of the biggest surprise for me was his defensive pressure. It wasn't just getting a tackle but his ability to use his presence and bash his body around thr packs and stoppages. Stark different to Weid who doesn't really display any of this whether that's VFL or AFL. 

Van Rooyen has more of a presence in the air. I've watched a few games where he's got that ability to draw defenders and crash packs in the way of Josh Kennedy from WC.

His contested marking is elite for his age. He took advantage of the ariel work today and took this huge contested clunk over two north defenders out of no where. It was very impressive.

His follow up work and cleanliness below knees was evident as well because he set up a number of goals just being able to pick up thr clean ball and dish it off to a play in a much better position close to goal.

Weids form at AFL level wasn't really that bad but on today's display I think he may be behind McDonald and Van Rooyen.

There is no rush for JVR to play senior footy even though I'd have him in the team in a heart beat. But he'd be my next in line for selection if McDonald, Brown and Jackson were to miss through injury.

Probably because he doesn't do it in the senior side.

Also I was very impressed with Taj Woewodin and Deakyn Smith.

Both are incredibly well balanced and poised with ball in hands. Smith could become a handy future AFL player off half back with his speed and ability to shut down opposition smalls.

Taj barely missed a target by foot. He really weights his kicks with penetration and links up well through thr midfield. Has a smart football brain and I reckon he's closer to a debut then most think. Doing everything right at VFL and we have a great young prospect on hand.
