Charlie Spargo Contract talks

Extract from AFL article:

"Spargo's hard running, tackling pressure, toughness and smarts with the ball are highly rated by the Demons and he was a valuable cog in their flag machine last year when he played in every game for the season.

A three-year contract would take Spargo through to his free agency after he was selected by the Demons in the 2017 NAB AFL Draft.

Spargo started his career with 18 games and three finals in his debut season in 2018 but managed eight games in each of the 2019-2020 campaigns before his excellent 2021 season saw him cement his place in the Demons' side. – Callum Twomey"

Love Charlie.  Such a cool cat.  And, already a seasoned finals campaigner.  Not sure if the 3 years is a guess but makes sense as it takes him to FA at the end of 2025.

I totally rate Charlie and his contribution to the side, but I do also wounder if he is the sort of player that we see as replaceable with other similar players we have comming through like Bedford, Kade Chandler, Bailey Laurie etc.

Another article I read reciently put the case that if we are to keep other higher profile, more unique out of contract players like Brayshaw and Jackson, we might need to sacrifice a few mid tier players to keep the salary cap space available.

At this point in the big picture, you would home that the respective players recognise what a rare and unique oppertunity they have have sucess and to win multiple premierships and do place more value on that than more imeediate finacial rewards, but I'd also understand if a player like Charlie prioritised their long term finacial future, though that he is still realitively young should temper that a little you would hope.

Good news, still remember bringing a pal to a Melbourne game last year who hadn't watched much footy in a few years -  In the first quarter he said Spargo looked too small/slow, by the end of the game he saw the light.

if he is paid per cm height we will get a bargain.

As his grandfather siad to him once "...if your good enough, you're big enough..."

He's a giant compared to many other alleged small forwards in the comp.

Getting the contracts for the 'lesser lights' (and I mean that with absolutely not disrespect to Spargs!) out of the way early is a good thing given we have two MASSIVE deals to get done this year in Jackson and Oliver.

has nicely moved from the 15-20 brigade selection wise into the 10-15 slot.

Could be a 200 gamer easily

He so often kicks a goal when needed to break a deadlock

a very underrated crumber and his forward pressure is great. His tackles stick

I don't see Beford and Chandler as similar to Spargs tbh, massive difference in the quality of decision making and score involvement impact IMO.

Laurie we'll have to wait and see, by all reports he could become a very good kick for us, but he's yet to play a game.

Spargo has played 61 games since 2018.

Bedford and Chandler have a combined total of 5 games.

I reckon that tells you if Spargo could be replaced by either of them.

Bedford and Chandler have played that few games because guys like Kossie, Nibbler and Spargo have maintained their form, we haven't had any injuries to that type of player and they have been deprived of opportunities that might have got elsewhere.

I'm not saying I want the club to push Charlie out the door by any means, as he brings a hardness and aggression that some of those other smalls may not be quite up to as you are perhaps suggesting, but if we do have a cap squeeze on, perhaps he's one of the second tier / B grade players in our best 22 that we would be prepared to let go for the benefit of the team?

Yeah definitely hear what you're saying re cap squeeze, and we may very well see a favourite or two depart due to it, I just really rate Spargo in terms of how his particular skills fit within our overall mix. Might not get huge numbers, but his pressure and delivery forward are massive for us I reckon, and I think we lose out a lot if Chandler or Bedford (who I both also like) replace him.

Me personally, I'd prefer to lose someone like Harmes or Hunt than Spargo. I think they're more replaceable.

What I love about Spargo is when he kicks a goal he’s just like, “yeah cool, I’ll take that”. But when a teammate kicks a goal he really gets around them. Such a team first, selfless player.

I’ll be the first to admit that I thought he would struggle to find his place in the team at the start of 2020, but towards the end of the season I could just start to see what the club saw in him. 2021 he showed he’s a vital cog in our machine, love the bloke!

I have such confidence when the ball is in his hands (although he was strangely erratic versus the Suns). He has become so steady and reliable. He knows he isn't a booming kick so concentrates on using it well within his limits. Very important part of our forward 50 setup.

A couple of times watching replays I have re-watched patches of games, and focused on what players like Spargo, Neal-Bullen and Brayshaw do off the ball. They work so hard to ensure team mates get the ball. My guess is that Goody and the coaches love Spargo for this quality.

I also reckon Brown and Fritsch must love seeing him with the ball - his first instinct is to look for a leading player.

His tackles stick and his disposal is near flawless. He's not flash, just goes about his business week in, week out. The definition of a quiet achiever. A contract renewal is a no-brainer. Sign him up

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie
