One thing which was really obvious was the aerial contest - it seemed like whenever we kicked to a contest (Max, a lot)), they punched back in the direction where the kick came from and they had multiple players at the drop to extract and clear

Not sure if just something from the night but happened a bit

A technique borrowed from the centre bounce where the Opposition mid field just rove to Max.

It makes sense.

Things are going to be harder all over the ground this year. I dare say for the first time in decades coaches have been putting work into the Dee's over christmas

I’ll be really surprised if they pull any levers on the talls (TMac). I don’t think you can make decisions for talls based on a game that really didn’t suit aerial contests and I think Goody largely errs on the side if “if in doubt, leave it alone”, especially when we’re winning.

I also can’t see Tmac being out of the side until the backline is back to full strength. Because heaven forbid another defender goes down mid game he is the one who can go back and do a decent job.

Who replaces Hunt will depend on who is available.

And not sure of any injury updates tonight - Rivers was said to be hobbling a bit again.

I guess Tom McD gets to stay largely because of his adaptability, though were Weed to have a really good game tomorrow it could be tempting to give him a run.

Speculation on Weeds form in the "twos" takes me  back about 4 seasons when the Dee's had a list full  of second level champions who, when called for, weren't even depth players

Hunt has to go. I mean he really is great at hitting up players, i just wish it was his team mates not the opposition.

The calls for Tom Mac to be dropped are not to do with last night alone, not sure why posters think that.

He has been poor and underwhelming now since the start of the finals last year.

Now, I can see that he is more versatile than Weed and has runs on the board as a defender but surely at some point enough is enough. He constantly complains to umpires, regularly fumbles the ball and the longer he keeps his spot playing at this level, the more I see Weideman wanting out, (regardless of him signing).

It just sends a poor msg to players that are busting themselves to get into the side. The fact that weed wasn't given a look in after his four goal half against the blues VFL side still baffles me. You'd think they'd give him a chance playing a full praccie game.

I also don't buy the "don't drop anyone after a win" talk. It's a nonsense and such a simplistic view.

Every side is different, match ups are different and structures are different. Selection is based on a number of factors. Not only a win or a loss.

lol, but unfortunately very true. That was a shocker of a game for him from a dismissal point of view. He was directly responsible for 2 goals. Hunt on song is a very nice thing, opens up the ground for us so well. Hunt playing like that is really damaging. If lever or hibbo are ready to go he may well have stamped his own papers last night.

IN Hibberd  Bedford

OUT Hunt  Spargo

If Hibberd is ready he must come in for Hunt

Spargo looks slow and not have a big impact. no goals again. had a few neat kicks but not enough imo. Let'v give Bedford a go for a couple of weeks and see what he can do

T Mac on notice if Weed or Brown plays well.  his body does not look good, looks fumbly and not marking well

When was the last time Goodwin made 3 unforced changes?
Also Spargo getting dropped? Absolute LOLs

I don't reckon Spargo's place in the team is that assured.  He has not impacted games like he was last year. despite his few clever kicks inside 50 which are good he needs to hit the scoreboard and influence the game more imo.

Bedford and Chandler have shown almost nothing when given their opportunities at AFL level. Spargo isn't getting dropped for either of them in the near future.

Going back to last year Tom's now up to about 8 ordinary games in a row.

I wish we had a decent medium sized forward to provide extra pressure and some marking, but given we don't should we just give Bedford a run in the starting line up and maybe use Tom as sub.

Last week Tom was good

Down back after half time. Couldn’t haven’t caught covid in the eagles change rooms as a forward

I agree with everything you’ve said about Tom.

But Sam would be playing as our 3rd tall after Brown and a ruck and we just don’t need nor can we carry another tall.

If Weid was to play I’d almost say we use Jacko at centre bounces and then play him CHF whilst Weid rolls up to ruck around the ground for the 30-40% Jacko usually does on ball.

Weid’s spot on the list is to cover Brown and Jackson, not as a replacement for Tom.

Weid, Ben Brown, Fritsch and a ruck - nope, no way. North tried something like that in round 1, it’s just no good.

In May's post-game interview, he mentioned Bowey copped a couple of injuries/knocks, and also that Rivers probably came back "early" from his knee injury.

Probably keep a watch on those two this week.

On form Mitch Brown is way ahead of Weideman and deserves a game at least.

Watching the VFL today Weideman has zero confidence and struggled to take a mark. He was very poor today.

I can't see Spargo getting back in form getting a couple of touches each week.  I'd like to see him go back to Casey and rack up 20+ touches then bring him back in 3 weeks.

No other changes needed in winning side until Salem and Lever are fit.

Has he ever had 20+ touches?  He isn't in the midfield.

On your criteria he would never get back into the side!

Based on Goodwin's press conf there are unlikely to be any unforced changes.  He said Lever and Hibberd will be assessed.  Their were no hints of other changes; may depend on recovery.  Goodwin said he was very happy with our defence vs GCS , understandable as we kept them close to our goal of 60'ish points.

Ess are missing a few fwds and with Cox out they won't have many talls.  So we could give Lever another weeks rest.

Just saying he doesn’t always need to hit the scoreboard himself if he sets up his usual few.

No way Weed or Dunstan get considered from the Casey game.

The only players who were noticeably bad versus the Suns were Hunt, Spargo and Fritsch. But Goodwin continues to affirm the success of the defensive unit.

I would rest Rivers - he improved during the game after a horror start but he looks unfit for 4 quarters and was proppy to say the least.

OUT: Rivers

IN: Hibberd

If Weideman has a really good game today then Tmac's position must come under serious consideration right?

Even if Hibberd is fit, they won't bring him straight back in after missing 4 weeks of no match play. He'll need a full game in the VFL to see if his calf can get through before he is considered in the AFL.

If there is one player I'll be keeping a close eye on today at Casey it's Deakyn Smith. Speedy half back who's got good poise and skill.

He's the one I want putting pressure on Jayden Hunt.

Forget Weeds, if Mitch Brown kicked 7 then he DEMANDS Inclusion

I think that the Suns deliberately used the opposite wing to Langdon to take his run out of the game. I noticed that we used him more in the second half.!

Yeah, they always seemed to play through the non crowd side of the ground.

Oh wait, that was both!!

(Dees supporters seemed to easily outnumber Suns supporters).

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
