I detect an underlying sense of 'put down' of Joel Smith in some of these posts. As though copping injury after injury is a sign of weakness or self indulgence. I would have thought compassion would be more appropriate.

Injury List: Round 8

Blake Howes - Foot | 10-12 weeks

Given Howes’ injury (navicular stress facture) is of the sort that could easily blow out beyond that time frame, the club might give consideration to putting him on the long term injury list to allow it entry into the midseason  draft. Tough call but how much of a season can the kid have even if he’s right to return by Round 20?

How do the mechanics of the mid-season draft work? If we add a player in that way, do we have one fewer pick in the end-of-year draft, would we be required to delist one extra player at the end of this season or is there some other way of finessing our list numbers?

Given the overall history of navicular fractures going badly, wouldn’t it be sensible to maybe write off the season and give him (Howes) every chance to make the best recovery possible?

joel smith has never played more than four consecutive senior games - and then only once - in six years

But he would have if not for covid this year as well right?  He's had an unlucky run but he has also been messed around with being put in different positions and in his injury management (pre Burgo).

Mate, he's had one position change and that's him pretty much swapping opposite ends of the ground.

Bit of a carry on with the 'messed around' part..

he was messed around when he was injured during a pre-season praccy match where he wasn't taken off, resulting in him being sidelined much longer than he probably should have

I don't read on people's opinion of Joel like that dieter.  I think the put down is on Joel's body that keeps breaking down through absolutely no fault of his own.  It's sad but it just keeps happening.

I'm a fan of Joel and have always said if he can some continuity in his game he could be a real weapon down back.  He's a neat enough kick on the rebound, has great speed to play on the smalls, a wonderful leap to challenge the bigs and has no shortage of courage in the air.

He just needs a good trot of luck and stay on the park to keep developing.

edit:  Add on to the above - we definitely did him no favours in that pre-season game.  That was a disaster by the club's medical staff at the time.

I'm not entirely sure to be honest but it would be fascinating to know.  I've never been a club/player basher (even in our dark days) but I was in absolute shock that day that a professional organisation like an AFL team would let a bloke back on the ground when they're clearly injured..... in a practice match.....   what a disaster!

No wonder his old man went off his chops!

Looks like it just got better.

Available this week.

Lol, told ya (unfortunately)

He is out until mid season. Most concerning though is that there has been minimal improvement over the last few months, presumably they may have just ramped it to make see whether he could handle the tolerance of carrying it into games or whether its likely to go again

I hope im wrong but i have a feel we may have seen the last of Hibbo

SCANS have confirmed that Melbourne captain Max Gawn has avoided any structural damage to his knee.

The skipper suffered a knock to his knee during Sunday’s match against St Kilda but was cleared on Tuesday and has been given the go-ahead to train this week.

In other positive news for the Dees, defender Christian Salem, who has been sidelined since Round 1, will return to training this week and will look to be available for selection in the next fortnight.

Joel Smith and Blake Howes have both successfully undergone surgery, while Michael Hibberd is continuing to progress in his rehabilitation of a calf injury.

Unfortunately, Andy Moniz-Wakefield sustained a concussion during the VFL on Sunday and will enter the appropriate protocol period.

Hear more from Dr Laura Lallenec below, as she provides a full injury update.

Great news!

Trains this week and next.  Has a run at Casey the next weekend when seniors play the Roos.  Then cherry ripe for the run up to the bye:  Freo, Swans, Pies.

He could come straight back into the seniors but I don't think there is a need to rush so get him ready for the Freo game.

He may well retire at season's end as well, which means that the quirky stat of a Premiership team never taking the field together again would remain for at least another year.

It was only him missing from our Round 10 team right?

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p

There were a number of Demonland Trackwatchers at Gosch's Paddock this morning to bring you their observations from Preseason Training. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti
