That's a mean looking haircut. A 40+ goal year on the horizon judging by that.

And Casey really needs those goals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Very true

Also I notice that he is rarely able to position himself so he is free to get the break on an opponent and take the relatively easy mark. Both Brown and Fritsch have this skill.
If he is to replace Tom Mac his ball skills will need to improve.Tom Mac is very useful as a handball receive and give. Have rarely noticed Weid demonstrating these skills.

Perhaps he is too one dimensional for the modern game

Weid is confused by the word 'clunk' . Before you can clunk 'em, ya gotta be in position or moving to a better position, preferably just about alone.

Personally I hope he makes it, he's got the talent all he needs is confidence. Time after time he gets his hands to the ball but just can't hold them, if he clunks a few it may all come together.

I think everyone wants that Dante. Fingers crossed.

He has to really dominate at Casey, not just 3 goals a week he needs to kick 4 or 5 and on good days kick 6 or 7, he has to show he's too good for Casey.

He has to displace someone and that will be hard, but if he kicks goals consistently, they won't be able to ignore him. Tmac will have to be more consistent if that's the case.

He's got a tank, I recall one game he played in when Jesse was still with us and he was second on the ground to Jesse in ground covered at half time.

There will be injuries this year that will give him a leg up.

My question is: What's changed?

Physical gifts:
He had an interrupted preseason last year and is clearly motivated this year. So there's a chance he's stronger and fitter. The added physical tools then lead to better performance that then builds confidence and away he goes.

The year before he had a really bad hip problem.

It could have been 2 years before the covid years all blend into one.

I've been his biggest critic and would have delisted him but after seeing the photo and knowing how many things the club is getting right at the moment I just have a gut feeling 2022 might be the turning point.

Not to mention players possible missing for a week with Covid.

This could be the year where a deep list becomes very important and we have one.

Absolutely Wrecker but I feel he needs to be in the 2/3rd ruck given a leash to get around  the ground. Stuck at FF he is not marking enough or bringing the ball to ground. Even try him at CHB and he will succeed.

Think about his Finals games in 2018 and even his game vs Carlton best games ticking and around the ground.

That's  the same as Dogga  plays when he is freed up not in the one  position.

Spot on redleg. I think this is worth expanding on. The experience in the US in the NBA has shown that people, even stars, will be coming in and out of the team all year. Teams with a deep list and players who can play a number of roles will be well placed to deal with this.

This next season is going to be way crazier than 2021. Even though there were venue changes and games with no crowds, that is going to feel like nothing compared to teams with non-isolating players who will inevitably get covid and be unable to play. Bring double vaxxed will help but as we are seeing with omicron people can still get it.

i think retaining weid is part of a really careful list strategy to ensure we have multiple layers of coverage in all positions.

Without bothering to open the story up to read it, I'm betting it will be just like pre-season videos of Ben Simmons making 3 pointers and jump shots.

......and what happens to that hypothesis when he cracks the Premiership side?

We saw glimpses of what he is capable of in the 2018 finals and I was seriously impressed. The problem is we have never seen it since despite being given blocks of games to show us what he can do. If he can make the quantum leap next year and starts taking contested grabs and slotting a few I will be thrilled for him. At very least he will provide good backup cover for the club as the third tall KPF. I also like the Weid's mobility around the ground and could see him doing a great job for us down in the back half should that be required. Going to be hard though trying to break into the best backline in the AFL.

He has made the commitment to stay at the MFC knowing how hard it will be to break into this Premiership side so we should wish him well and cheer him on, as we should with all our boys. GO WEID !

He'll probably fail yet again and be dropped, just like has has several times already.

Did you actually have a point to make? Do you think he will suddenly be able to do things that up until now he hasn't been able to?

If he does, wonderful. But I think it's far more likely that he wont based on what we've seen so far.

No, you're right, i don't have a point, but i am intrigued and happy for him to be head down bum up and red hot go.

If he had left i would have felt that we had lost something in the living breathing happy monster that was our Demon family.

In their successful years the Hawks had Ryan Shoenmakers bubbling away as a handy back back up fwd and back but never really cementing a place. Worst case, Weid could be our version. Hitting the right window of development, can be useful in the ruck, I think he will be well suited to the backline as well if required. Hope for stardom, but will settle for good long term back up and clubman.

that's ryan '2015 premiership player' schoenmakers, and a great comparison

12 years on an afl list - 121 games, 51 goals, 1 premiership, 1 acl, 1 achilles

not a bad career at all

Same could have been said of Jackson until halfway through 2021. (Although he managed to double grab a few.) Then he held the marks and finished the season as a star in our Premiership. Come on, Sam! Same thing awaits you.

6 years in the system, and he is still fringe. Unless he alters his marking techniques, he won’t go further. He is trying to replace 2 forwards who take pack marks and win one on ones. And most importantly he has to develop 2nd efforts. Can that be done? I’m not hopeful, as that is an attitude thing, not confidence.

I think he started to show he belonged in 2020 and then had the stress fracture in his hip last preseason which derailed him. His game against the Pies was very bad but other than that he wasn't terrible. I'm not willing to write him off yet, give him a full preseason and I'm backing him in to contribute if not cement his spot next year.

Can't see this. Simmons throws it like Selwood -- could be an advantage -- but overarm so would get pinged by the umps. Would get tackled a lot as he bounces the ball too much. Also he has no left foot. Or right foot. And correct me if I'm wrong but he hasn't even been drafted yet? Most likely to get picked up by GCS or GWS as a "project" player.

Stress fracture in the hip? I've never heard of this condition before, for anyone. It sounds like it might be very painful, given the amount of force that goes through the hips just for everyday activities, let alone football.

He’s pretty much the only player you would say is “under the pump” to perform, he will also need a little bit of luck to fall his way but this has to be his time to wrestle the second forward position away from TMac (can’t see Brown losing his spot).

Him, Hunt, Tomlinson, and Melksham should be coming with the most motivation I would have thought.

Melksham is far past it.

If he plays a senior game next year, then we're starting to take backward steps.

He needs 3 games to get to 200. I bet he will play 3.

If he didnt have the supplement saga year off he would have made it to 100 games for the club and become a life member.

What would be the bare minimum pass mark for Weid this year? I think he needs to show that he can consistently kick multiple goals.

He needs to hold his marks.
not be close, hold them.
At least 4-5 a game minimum

Over the years I've both posted in support of Weid and [censored] canned him. He's played some terrific games and others where he's made a witch's hat look like a Brownlow medalist. He's had more ups and downs than a bride's nightie.

This contract must surely be his last chance at AFL level and I guess he knows it.
