Yep, I'm not a fan at all of requesting to play Footscray in Round 1.

I feel its not really at all humble unfurling the flag in their faces, in fact it could make the difference given how close some teams are in terms of mental application.

We talk about 'respecting' our opponents, well this isn't it for mine.

I don't think we should bite off more than we can chew.

GCS, we could get 70k demons into the ground.

I think we would get at least 70,000, weather permitting, no matter who we played.

Hope it’s same team.

NO CHANGE

I don't agree we need an interstate side. No chance of 70k with pies or tigers.

I'm not overly fussed about opening the season on the Thursday night but can see the financial advantage in playing the Dogs round 1 along with another big home game a couple of weeks later to offset being the away side next year on Anzac Eve & QB.

My only concern would be that unfurling the premiership flag against our GF opponents would have an element of rubbing their noses in it. Maybe they could unfurl Bayley Smith's hair on the same night to give their fans and the commentators something to fawn over.

Having the game on Saturday afternoon would allow the supporters of all ages to attend the match and watch their team unfurl the flag raise by the heros of yester year.

Not too fussed if its us or not, we'll get a good slot no matter what (you'd think) just as long as it's not bloody Carlton!

Would be interesting to know if the Thus rnd1 game is the highest viewing of the round over other time slots like Fri or Sat night.

Mr Pert, if you're out there, please don't request Footscray for our flag unfurling game

You'll have 6 months to plan, and after all of our finals being in different states with locked down borders, you Melbournians still find something to complain about if you can't choose the exact day and time?

I'd be going if it was played in my home town at 3am on a Tuesday.

I personally think the first game of the season should be a GF replay every year, with the previous winner hosting.

I prefer we play an interstate team in round 1, that way we get a bumper crowd for the unfurling of the flag against a team we traditionally don't have big crowds against.

If we played the Pies, Cats. Blues, or Tigers, we would get 90k+ at the  “G”. Why not optimise our current pulling power?

Tend to agree.

Also, it's Melburnians.

I feel that we play our best footy under lights and I enjoyed the twilight game at Optus, gives us the best of both worlds and still get home at a reasonable time.💕❤️💙

I would like our first home game to be at the G against Freo or GCS or GWS. 90k opportunities for Dees fans to do something that hasn't happened for 57 years and has only happened 13 times in 124 years.

Thurs night vs the dogs

Touch the dogs up again & let Rich/Carlton know we are the new big dog on the block

Bombers at the G on a Fri or Sat night would be the best I think. Bombers will be talked up all preseason no doubt. Up and comer against the champs.

Dogs at the G has less appeal to me. Lets play them mid year again.

If the AFL came out and said it will happen every year and lets make it traditional then ok.  But I cant see the point in it otherwise. As others have pointed out that game  will be a huge game any time in the season and we would get a huge crowd at the G for round 1 anyway. Plus unfurling the flag in their faces is really just asking for trouble

  • REPORT: Collingwood

The media focus on the fiery interaction between Max Gawn and Steven May at the end of the game was unfortunate because it took away the gloss from Melbourne’s performance in winning almost everywhere but on the scoreboard in its Kings Birthday clash with Collingwood at the MCG. It was a real battle reminiscent of the good old days when the rivalry between the two clubs was at its height and a fitting contest to celebrate the 2025 Australian of the Year, Neale Daniher and his superb work to bring the campaign to raise funds for motor neurone disease awareness to the forefront. Notwithstanding the fact that the Magpies snatched a one point victory from his old club, Daniher would be proud of the fact that his Demons fought tooth and nail to win the keenly contested game in front of 77,761 fans.

  • PREGAME: Port Adelaide

The Demons are set to embark on a four-week road trip that takes them across the country, with two games in Adelaide and a clash on the Gold Coast, broken up by a mid-season bye. Next up is a meeting with the inconsistent Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval. Who comes in and who goes out?

  • POSTGAME: Collingwood

Despite effectively playing against four extra opponents, the Dees controlled much of the match. However, their inaccuracy in front of goal and inability to convert dominance in clearances and inside 50s ultimately cost them dearly, falling to a heartbreaking one-point loss on King’s Birthday.
