At least Tom Scully did this.

I’m all honesty though, how hard would it have been to put our something on his social media simply saying “Thanks to the MFC for drafting me and giving me the opportunity to become a premiership player. I loved my time in red and blue and thanks to the fans for your support. It’s time for me to go home and be with family” - basic decency. He is dumb, no doubt about it, and has been managed poorly by his player agent.

How about waiting til the deal is complete first! . If he does that kind of thing now it’s undermining our position. I have no doubt he is getting informed by the club in terms how they would like him to conduct himself.

How is it undermining our position? Really interested .. he has announced he is leaving and requesting a trade to WA. How would thanking the supporters impact the trade?

Im just speculating. But fwiw this is my thinking. it would seem to me if he says “goodbye” before a deal is actually done it automatically diminishes our hand. If Grundy said “goodbye and thank you” to the pie fans pre deal, wouldn’t you think it’s possible we could pay less for him?  I understand Grundy is still contracted so it’s not exactly the same, but none the less Jackson is saying no more or less than Grundy atm. And I’m sure both of them care enough about their previous team mates to hold off on saying too much before things are finalised.

Thanking your old club usually only happens after the trade in minted. He is still contacted to mfc for a bit more

Not sure how the preseason draft works these days but can't he price himself quite high?  Say $1.5Million?  For one year only?

Surely North can't just grab him and then pay him peanuts.  And for how long? Or does the AFL have a say?

But a deal will be done before it gets to that scenario and it will almost certainly be with Freo.  I'm still of the opinion that a very big offer came early (the money) so all the rest of it is working out what he's worth in a trade

Others may be convinced that it's all about the go-home factor but I'm reckoning that's the secondary reason

Buddy, Ablett & Scully all went for money.  Dusty held out and as soon as North offered the big money, the Tigers came to the party with the fat contract.  Martin then signed on the dotted line and the rest is history

Oof, Luke. Dunno how often it works when people return to WA. The childhood experience is so different from the adult one, I reckon, if you have been exposed to bigger, less isolated cities. Not to mention becoming the biggest, youngest, flashiest fish in a very small pond. His family is going to need to get around him, cos he will be on the backpage more often than not. Personally, the thought feels suffocating. I wish gratitude and luck to the young fella and would much rather see the Dockers land him than WCE who can continue to go and [censored] themselves forever and a day.

The equivalent in points to pick 3 doesn’t make an offer, equivalent in the real value of the player at the present time. The club used pick 3 to select him and with it came risks as to whether he would improve, be injured and yes, even as to whether he would succumb to the risk of flight which was always there. The club’s investment in Jackson paid off, he improved immensely and is now a premiership player with a long future ahead of him as a top player in a position where the number of players at the elite level is limited. To me, that makes his current trade value much greater than the points equivalent of the number at which he was selected three years ago.

Ouch.  Go back to the first page and early pages. We’d hope that LJ would at least sign for another 2 years (up to 5 years) with the lure of playing with his mates Riv and Kozzzy and further premiership success. After winning the ‘21 premiership, we were high on optimism.

But unfortunately the known poison of the “go home factor” was too strong and the enticement of home-family/surf/$$$ all proven the winner for LJ and his management.

It’s all over after 3 years. His burst of brilliance in games (especially the ‘21 GF) and domination v Lions in round 14 this year will be fondly remembered.  Though he was always “nearly” ready to be a star, yet still at only 20 and often frustrated with dropped marks and silly decision making.

He’s got a lot to thank MFC for and to Goody, the coaches & staff, Jason Taylor and his teammates.

Thanks LJ for 52 games, a 2021 premiership player and 2021 rising star winner.

fwiw, from the sun:

Melbourne says it wants two first-rounders and a second-rounder or two picks within 10 (including one within the first seven picks) for Jackson.

That is doable for Freo:  2022 first (#13) and first 2023 (#11 - #14) first and North's 2023 second (#19 - #21) from the Logue/Tucker trade and we may need to give something back; a 3rd round pick maybe...

That is not dissimilar to Kelly to WCE who gave two first and two second round picks:  #14, 18, 24 and 33 but got back #52 and a future 3rd round pick.

While Jackson is worth a lot more than Kelly I'd do the two firsts and one second deal.

One could always argue “we have to wait and see how we use these picks” but 2 first round picks in the teens just seems like we’re losing out. A top 5 pick should be a must, but I can’t see it happening.

Hopefully we would use the second on Grundy, and not one of the firsts

That’s what happens when mummy still wipes his butt & ticks him into bed. What a weak individual, no respect, no conviction, no acknowledgment at all about the club that made him. Mummy pulls all the strings & runs his life, how demoralising that must be for a man.

Ahwell at least they get to spoon in bed at night. Couldn’t care what happens but hopefully he has a short & unsuccessful career now.I rate the mop headed mummies boy lower than Scully as honestly everyone knew Scully was gone & at least he was man enough to face the public himself.

We should be also willing to accept a number of lower picks rather than just a top 7 pick and a top 10 pick so long as the aggregate value is the same.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
