Would be lovely if we win the flag, draft  a future champion with the LJ pick and Freo finish last, handing us another 2 champions, with their F1and F 2nd picks and LJ has a quiet year in 2023.

Is that too much to ask for?

More to the point in this discussion, is the simple fact that Melbourne's forward entries were a bloody shambles and the ostriches who plan the Forward Line strategy need to learn that only fools keep making the same mistakes with an expectation that some day, something might change. Here's hoping.

And as for Jackson delivering Bell's expectations? Let's wait and see, but methinks he's doing something akin to spitting into the wind.

Maybe...but it's worth asking the question.

They could have an injury riddled, poor form, weight of expectation year like our 2019.

We can only hope.

I look at parrallels between Luke Jackson and Jesse Hogan both played for the MFC, both won the Rising Star award, both went to Fremantle and both left to be closer to family and friends.

Will he go the way that Jesse went or to stardom?

Haven’t seen Jacko ‘jawing’ away on Instagram yet.

Freo will be lucky if Jackson can match the amount of goals Lobb kicked for them last year, I'm thinking probably not.

I’m thinking definitely not.

Lobb kicked 36 last season.

Jackson would be lucky to manage 20 across a full season.

Every time I read DL I think no, then I watch the GF and other things he does below his hips and think wow. Not fully utilising all his skills yet, absolutely worth the coin and risk, his best is amazing. And funnily enough really don't think it will be down to the goals he kicks, more about how he makes others better and can put team mates in space.

Don't disagree with any of that, but Bell's claim that he'll be a great key forward isn't really utilising those tallents.  If Freo do try to use him in that key forward capasity, it could actually destroy his development.  I think their actual coach Justin Longmiur is smarter than that though.

yeah, don't take any notice of what bellend says. he's just shooting his mouth off. he's not the coach.

Are you serious? The Hogan thread got to 400 pages, so this one has a fair while to go.

Yeah but Hogan was much more "interesting " than this other guy.

The Dockers paid almost purely for potential and the hope that it will come through. It's a good investment but absolutely a risky one, there's no way around that and there's no way of knowing until some time passes.

Dockers didn't really pay much for his potential.

Last night showed how grossly unbalanced the trade was.  We couldn't get into the top 5/6 of the draft with their two mid/late first round picks nor get there when we added our F1 pick.

The trade looks worse when we note that we gave them 47, (the pick we got for Bedford but we had wanted more from GWS).  So all up the trade was Jackson, Bedford (aka #47) for two mid range firsts and a mid range 2nd.

I've moved on but imv there is every reason to think he will be a champion for them altho most of us prefer he wasn't.

Can't bring myself to not wish him well but I do hope Freo fail miserably in their pursuit of a flag for being such miserable trade players and especially after Bell's swipe at mfc recently.

Oh sorry I meant in terms of coin LH. Draft capital wise they got a very very good deal.

Happy for him to have some personal success but yeah no flags.

I don't think the narrow kick to the pocket forward 50 entry game that we played for the first 3/4 or 2021 and alot of 2022 is the destination in our game style.

For alot of the back half of 2021, Goody and the coaches spoke about working on the attacking part of our game (or the phase when we were in possession or whatever the lingo is these days).  The lead up into finals 2021 and that finals series, we played a far more effective attacking game when we had the momentum and I think that is actually the game style we aim to play.  Of course you also need the toops to play it and back half of 2022, we had no T Mac etc.  The recruiting of Hunter is another sign we know we need to correct our entry and that's the type of game plan we are really targeting.

That said, it is also a key plank of our game style to kick to the forward pocket, retain the ball and defend from within our forward 50 that helps keep us in games even when we might not be in our best form and help us win games more consistently and set us up deep inside the top 4 in genuine positions to win premierships.  After having watched some great attacking MFC sides over the decades, I'll take the one that finished with home and away ladder positions of 1st and 2nd, including a premiership over consecutive seasons than the ones that would scrape into finals, but always behind the 8 ball to actually get into the GF, let alone win a premiership.

While I don't agree that the kick to the forward pocket plan worked like you say it was how it got there in 2022 snd who was there that determines the result most often. Didn't help us win those 8 matches after Round 10 this season.

When Harry Petty was moved belatedly for 10 mins vs Lions he played at FF not the pocket. We would have won that game if Goody had moved him at 3/4 time I believe.

And in choosing correctly our 2021 and 2022 teams over any others ie 1994 snd 2000 it was not the forwards fault but the fact was we had an inferior defence which when the two or 3 top sides played us could punch holes through it.

From 2020 onwards our defence has been the first ( not only reasons) and major reason that we have contended and won the Flag and in '20 improved our football.

We need to come up with a better plan in 2023 even though I believe we will have some better and more skilled players down forward to convert successfully.

And Harry Petty still might be needed to be switched early in 2023 for us to catch the Cats this year.

Returning to the brief flourishing of poesy several pages ago, may I paraphrase Elizabeth Barrett Browning:

'How do I miss thee? Let me count the ways. Finished.'

Luke i predict will not live up to Freo's expectations at all this year.   He will have some good moments, but will frustrate the coach/supporters/players by chasing the ball around the park.  He is not going to be a superstar of the competition, will just be happy just chasing that ball.

He often plays like a suburban footballer who shows little respect to positioning or his craft.

Will be a massive bust for Freo, they will expect big things from him given his pricetag, i think he will falter under the expectation.  By end of season i expect he will be under immense pressure.

His mum will then tell him none of that matters...as long as he is a good person.

Not sour grapes at all hey...

Remind me which poster made the following comments:

"Then there is Jackson, who is also super important to our future success."

"Luke Jackson may be the answer in the ruck.  He is like another midfielder when the ball hits the ground and we look more dynamic with him in there"

Helped us win a premiership and was a popular teammate, so I don't really get the angst some seem to have, and certainly think references to his mother are childish at best.

To be fair Genghis Khan and Ivan The Terrible were also ‘popular teammates’.

I feel like his mum is fair game. She waded into this with her ill judged Facebook comment on the day he effectively resigned, not when he was traded.

I do think time will make this all go away. I think LJ is still 3 years away from his best, and by then we will all have moved on.

Yeah, how dare she thank the club and the supporters and be happy to have her son back in the same state as her.

Saying a players Mum is "fair game" says more about you than her tbh.

I guess that money which Fremantle offered was not tempting enough for a young man, if the numbers thrown around were true then anybody who is 21 will take the money and run.

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.

  • NON-MFC: Round 09

Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?
