Just realised freo taking Jackson is payback for dees taking Jeff White, how did they do out of that trade?

pick 2 and 18 for white and 22

they traded pick 2 (brad ottens) for chris bond and pick 21

we used pick 22 to pick troy longmuir who - being a wa boy - inevitably requested a trade 'home' to freo several years later

i find it BIZARRE how much wa players some to be desperate to play in their home town

And then 2 years later we got done for exceeding the salary cap which was apparently related to the salary we were paying White

So in 1999 we forfeited our first round draft pick (pick 5) to ... Fremantle

And they drafted Leigh Brown with pick 5 who eventually played in the Pies 2010 Premiership team

no, our salary cap breaches were lyon, stynes, viney, and schwarz from memory - 95-98

and freo being 'gifted' an extra early pick beggars belief - one of wayne jackson's gifts for his beloved franchise

That's probably true but somehow it was all tied in with White thus Freo got our pick 5

cos they were wayne jackson's franchise baby

I remember thinking at the time that fair enough, we probably deserved a penalty but it should have stopped with the penalties handed out to our club

So we lose a pick but that pick can't be given to another club (except it was)

But did we not come clean about the salary cap breaches without any prompting?

Fremantle ended up with picks 2, 4 & 5 in that draft year

Some scenarios;

Jackson stays. In a few years he succeeds Max Gawn in the ruck, supported by some carefully recruited bigger-bodied forwards doing some ruck bashing sessions, and thereby providing a dynamism to our midfield that keeps us in premiership contention for a decade.

Jackson goes to Fremantle at the end of this season. Harmes trades out to Gold Coast and Andrew Brayshaw comes to Melbourne. Melbourne wins all the premierships for 4 more years because in the history of the VFL/AFL there has never been a midfield as quality or as balanced as Oliver, Petracca, Brayshaw & Viney.

Jackson, being the lovable young man he is, realises that Fremantle aren't able to offer a reasonable trade this season so agrees to a one year extension. At the end of 2023 the trade is made successfully, with the draft bonanza being traded for a solid worker ruck and grabbing a top quality kid. Melbourne also use the salary cap space opened up to lure both of the McKay twins as free agents, playing them forward together and ensuring we are never short of a contested marking target for the rest of the decade, going on to win multiple premierships.

I keep turning all kinds of scenarios in my head but I can't find one where we drop out of premiership contention, so, it is all fine.

I mean mentally on board. If Jackson does not have his heart in it, why play him?

Coz he is a good player who can help us win this year?

The problem with ‘scorched earth’?

Nothing grows on it.

Please stop this Andrew Brayshaw to Melbourne nonsense. Gus said months ago that Andy is happy in WA. His twin brother and oldest brother are there. Plus Freo are in their premiership window now, and Andy B is a big factor. They're not trading him for Jackson.

Yep, Andrew B is happy at Freo and he's their no 1 untouchable and best player. Besides, he'd be worth far more than Dogga in any trade

Remember Carlton fans saying Oliver to Blues was a lock? Lol!

I have no idea if Luke is going to stay or leave, but his body language suggests that he will stay for at least two years.

Well there you go, I thought he was playing rock, paper, scissors with Max.

Steveo, I'm far more interested in his body language on game day. Some pundits on here feel as though that's the only place to really tell if he is invested and interested in staying!! :mahoney2:

He's making the scissors sign.  Oh no!  It means he plans to cut and run.

Exactly right. Looks like he was going to cut Goodwin in half.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
