From the coach

"We've had some really good discussions with Luke about his contract and his position at our club moving forward. One thing I know about Luke is he loves his teammates and he loves his footy club. We're really comfortable where it sits with him," Goodwin said.

Completely different.  Tom had his future planned before he arrived.

If I was Jacko I wouldnt be in any hurry to sign a contract because every game he plays is pushing the $$$ up at the moment.

So Ralph says one thing and Edmund says another “safe as houses”.

I guess until it’s signed sealed and delivered, no one is wrong.

Well I believe in Luke…

Who was the last player we really wanted to keep but they left anyway?

Jeff Farmer??

Probably, but once Garry retired he was a certainty to go home.

Scott Thompson - yep; I remember his first game against us he almost followed the Dees players off the ground at half time.

Frawley and possibly Howe?

Why would you EVER want to go to West Coast who will be knee deep in a rebuild if not this season, next, and the ever unpredictable and irrelevant rusty anchors??

Yes with hindsight but at the time not so sure....

Frawley made the correct decision and Howe probably not....

Frawley was out the door after round 2 of his last year.  He was played up fwd thereafter.

Howe priced himself (or his manager did) out of contention.  Declined to be traded to GCS (don't blame him there) and found a spot with his childhood hero, FIGJAM, reportedly at the same $ we had offered, in the role we had offered.

In return we got Brayshaw and later replaced Howe with Lever.

Frawley got his premiership medal, Howe is a bit of a hero at the Pies.  We got Brayshaw and later got Lever.

Brayshaw and Lever have their premiership medals.  Howe is still hoping.

Very happy with the outcome.

Player leave clubs like Scully for money or expectation of more likely success at the new club.

Players like Hogan thought he was better off at Fremantle by being close to friends and his mother after his father died.

I think his friends led him astray and injuries depressed him.

So as we can see, it’s been a long long time since we lost someone we desperately wanted to keep.
Say what you like about the club but list management and recruiting has been on point for a long time. Well before the on field success came the good player management off it.

It's a fantastic point and l think the club would have no regrets in the last 10 years or so. Not surprisingly though considering where we were at and the overall quality of our list in that time.

Personally I haven't been worried about any of our departures save for Hogan but we all know how that's turned out.

On a random note I was sad when Walsh was traded to port, thought he was a quality back flanker for us. Not sure how much footy he played after that though.

Seems like only yesterday I was reading the latest goss. on whether Steven Tingay would or would not go to Fremantle. Fortunately he dropped anchor with the Dees.

We didn't want to keep Howe we tried to send him to the Gold Coast.

Pretty sure we were happy to see Frawley off too knowing we'd get a top 5 pick in compo.

I’m looking on the bright side. The good news is we are cherry ripe for another flag this season and if we win it Luke Jackson barring injury will be be there to hold up the cup.  If he goes we are still in the box seat for another good year and the compensation will be delicious. Would love to keep him but but can cope with a realist outlook.

Spot on. I don't understand the hate for Frawley and Howe by many on here. Neither player deserted the club, and both had to endure our darkest times. And both players should be proud of what they've achieved at their new clubs.

Tom Scully measured up to Luke Jackson's knee in height and ability. All he could do was run and positive lingers can do that and is a better fit for the team.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?
