To be an arrogant fan?

BoBo

Recommended Posts

The entomology of arrogant is the Latin 'arrogare'. It means ‘claiming for oneself’. Many people are perceived to be arrogant, for example, by claiming for themselves excessive knowledge or wisdom that is not theirs to claim.

Most premierships are won with the assistance of external influences. I have written about this elsewhere on Demonland. Recent examples include West Coast (basically granted a state side in the 1990s), Brisbane (picked the eyes out of Fitzroy), Hawthorn (tanked) and Geelong (father/son before the rules were changed).

We shouldn’t forget that we were given a hand-up in 2013 by the AFL when we had shot-off both our feet. We didn't get here totally under our own steam. Arrogance would be thinking we did.

Good thread BoBo.  I'm struggling a bit with this myself with respects to how to get the ballance right and how to go about it.

I've always thought we have had some gun players on our list, some of which have been somewhat underrated until now.  Also thought we'd have the potential in our team to go on and win the big one at some point.  If I had expressed these things in any way to supporters of other clubs in the past, I think they would have just been dismissive, felt sorry for me to be one of those poor Melbourne supporters and not seen it as a sign of arrogance.  But I feel like now that we have actually had the sucess, I might need to tone down some of that at risk of being seen to be arrogant.

The other dimension to this is the expression of celebrating the sucess that we've just had.  Again, I feel as if because of our torrid history, we have been forgiven for any over the top celebrations and I've certainly not held back on any public celebration of our premiership.

I guess it's about walking that fine line of being proud, happy and celebrating sucess without rubbing others faces in it and putting them down.

I think we should be all proud of the way the club and its supporters have behaved over the last week or so, including the ridiculous spout with the Bulldogs over “that” song. I think we have generally remain humble but proud. Whilst this may have had something to do with the action occurring 2k km away in Perth, we celebrated for a week, but strictly down to business when the draft was in sight bringing off  some  of the more deft drafting moves just in the last week.

Imagine how that would contrast with a Geelong, Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon or West Coast in the same situation?

I like to assure friends who follow other teams that I won't be like the smug Richmond pseudo - supporters willing to hand out unsolicited advice on how their team can improve. I then hand out unsolicited advice.

And I offer additional advice for Geelong supporters.

Interesting thread, and so timely.  I'm currently being trolled by Bulldogs supporters on Twitter calling me arrogant after I simply asked the question - "what's the deal? It's a song...." Apparently Bulldogs are accusing Melbourne players of mocking them after singing the same song Bulldogs sang when they got on the [censored] after the prelim....  I'm questioning myself whether I'm showing arrogance by wondering if they're being a bit precious over a song....

Katrina, just a couple of things:

1. From my limited observations, Twitter appears to be where rational debate goes to die

2. Therefore, they can 'suffer in their jocks' (that would be my rationale response)

3. I'm guessing, based on your concern, that you are far from an arrogant supporter. And I'm sure it was entirely coincidental that we sang the same song 😏. But maybe politely suggest that they were gifted the  2016 Grand Final anyway by some of the more lop - sided umpiring ever seen. So be thankful you unwashed plebs. That should assist the trolls.

I remember when we were flogging the Hawks one day a supporter turned to me and said 'You realise that is not Hawthorn out there today'.  Thats arrogance. (Who the heck were we playing).

I follow Melbourne  and dont barrack against other teams.  It must be said though that we need to show respect to the MFC because it is as plain as day they are the best team at the moment by 12 goals.  it is a fact.

Every time I argue with an opposition fan (unless they’re St Kilda) I know it’s inevitably going to come down to “when was the last time Melbourne won a premiership?” I’m really curious to see what they’re final argument will be now

"You wouldn't even have a club if it wasn't for Hawthorn" seems to be quite prominent again lately.

Also..  "you have been rewarded for mediocrity - any team could have won it with all those first round draft picks"

Thank you, that does actually help :). I guess I questioned myself when I replied to one of them "you know if I was a Bulldogs supporter I'd be angrier that my team got on the beers two weeks early, than a winning side singing a song.  Perhaps if Bulldogs didn't celebrate so hard after the prelim they wouldn't have lost by 74 points...."

I would have no problem with that post. I wouldn't be using big words with them however. i.e. celebrate

They’ll hate us soon and we will be ‘arrogant’ by default of reality.

Act how you want to act.

Judging Dees fans for ‘overstepping’ is such a waste of energy.

We were a laughing stock, and now when we laugh, it is with the carcass of a foe splayed out in the rear view.

You be you, Dees fans.

I don't know if this has happened to any fellow Demons over the years your opinion in football or sport type  conversations is generally overlooked and smirked at because you followed a crap footy team.

It's not an either/or proposition. But I think we can agree they are precious, snowflakey, bad losers and umpires' pets who got demolished in a GF and will be forever remembered for being on the wrong end of "that 10 minutes of football". Bit of a shame when you think about it.

And the old catch-all retort for any insult, barb, taunt, etc, to the winners: "Are you trying to make me feel good?"

Yet another Post Deliverance thread that needs a big 'Love Youse All' button 👍

I like (at least I think I do - it's more than 2 years (lifetimes?) ago now...) to sit just behind the Demon Army and its followers. I'm looking forward to taking my 'arrogance cue' from them in Round 1 2020.

I will, of course, need to temper it as befits my elderly station...

I don’t have a lot of time for arrogant supporters of successful sporting teams. I don’t see my contribution of a couple of hundred bucks a year to the club as a reason to act like I’m winning the hard ball gets or making tactical, match-winning decisions behind play. I’m too firmly entrenched in reality to know that I have absolutely nothing to feel personally responsible for with regards to the Demon’s success, and I am totally and utterly fine with that.

However……

A few months ago I was looking around a local second-hand furniture place where the guy in charge also makes small pieces of furniture. I mentioned I liked a particular style of shelf he had, to which he told me to get the measurements to him and he’d whip one up for me. I also noticed quite a lot of Western Bulldogs paraphernalia about the place.

Anyway, I emailed him a few weeks ago with a pleasant greeting and detailed my request, complete with the measurements. No reply for a week. I emailed again asking if he received my previous email, and whether he thought it would be a possibility. A few days later he responded saying words to the effect of “I haven’t forgotten. Just too busy right now.” I wrote back saying “No worries. But do you mean too busy to make the shelf or to do a quote? Sorry, I’m confused. If you don’t have time to make the shelf over the next few weeks I totally understand, but it would be good to know so I can figure out another option”. To which he wrote back “What part of “too busy” don’t you understand?”

Whoaaa….k.

I was so taken back by the dude’s response that I didn’t respond myself. Plus I thought not responding and letting him sit in his own guilt (if it existed) was a fitting punishment. This was all in the week leading up to the GF.

On the Monday after the GF I sent him an email that simply said “Carn the Demons, [censored]!!”

Goodwin has shown the way by instilling respect and humility in the team.

Supporters should follow suit.

There is never a good reason to be arrogant.

And this includes talking of dynasty. There is nothing certain in this world. Each year teams start all over again.

Dont think we need to be arrogant yet.

At the very least we can wear our club gear with real pride and know that people dont feel sorry for us any more.

Arrogance can come with flag 15 in 2023.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
