Weed has had enough opportunities, just like OMAC did.

Both had special individual qualities that would pop up from time to time, but neither could sustain consistent output.

On the other hand, look how consistent our new young players have been around the ball. Just what we need.

You know what else they all have in common? They’ve all developed or gotten better under the current successful regime. 
Weid, with a better pedigree than all of them has not improved at all. 

I’d give him a one year cheap contract if he wants it, simply because it’s a hard position to recruit for. And I mean cheap. 
 

If he doesn’t take it that’s fine. Luke Jackson will be clunking them up forward next year. And a red hot Gawn can also go down there whenever needed. We’re not as light on as most think. Gotta buy a couple of years to draft or poach Brown/Tomald replacements. Weid unfortunately isn’t it.

Pre seasons are so important these days he didn't have one. I wouldn't write him off, but if he we part of a deal that involved Cerra or some other star player I would be saying good luck.

People need to read this again and again. 

He has been on the list for 6 years and has never kicked more than 20 goals.  He has no other capability than a FF.  He is being held out of the team by TMac and BBB who is signed on for another 3 years. 

We have 3 years to find another second stringer ( or first).  Giving Weid another year means we are another year behind finding what we want. Just cut the losses, or we finish with another Jack Watts or Colin Sylvia scenario.

Their is no one he can replace he will spend his time in the 2's. Keep Weid if they think McDonald is cooked but I don't think he is cooked he's got a couple of years in him especially if that barracker not supporter dopey Dazzle thinks he's cooked then surely he has more years in him. Know nothing clown. Eventually Jackson can take over the CHF\ruck role if McDonald isn't up to it.

We often see players leave clubs to chase success, would Weideman prefer to stay at a good club with less opportunity of be the main man at a bad club?

You have forgotten the money element CB.

Would he rather stay at Melbourne for 50% less than a down the list side.

 

It was good seeing TMac being able to switch down back in the Geelong game to cover May. That versatility puts him ahead of Weids for me at the moment.

That aside I can see him improving in the future and if he doesn’t want to go anywhere I wouldn’t trade him. Both Browns have injury history too.

Just remember at the start of the pre season both Brown and Weideman were the preferred forward options over McDonald. 

In fact they definitely did prefer him as they initially were training McDonald up to be a wingman. Wasn't until both went down with injuries that this opened up the spot for him.

If Weideman stays and is able to get through the summer unscathed and injury free then I think they'll prefer trial the Weideman and Brown combo.

Problem with Weideman is that he's a man who's lost complete confidence in himself. I would trust a Mark Williams to assist him in regaining that confidence back.

How does one regain confidence? One option is to move to another environment, another is to try again.  
An old hobby horse of mine - do we have a sports psychologist?  Or is Mark Williams filling that rôle?  
In the inner reaches of the club, they will know (or have a good feeling for anyway) if he appears capable of redemption and I will leave it to their collective expertise.  They have done well thus far.

Why?

We were told by the club itself that he was recruited to play on the wing where he was average, and then he was moved down back where he flourished.

Nothing "narrow" about that at all.

 

I’d have Weideman working on becoming a key back and looking to shift Petty forward. Petty reads the play really well and has a good set of hands. If it becomes apparent in January this is a waste of time keep him as a backup tall. Does anyone think our luck with injuries is on endless loop? I want 3-4 Premierships out of this lot and whilst Weideman is no star he surely has a role in our future.

Agree, potential is a ugly word by years 4,5 and 6 plus. A shame as he seems to work hard unlike the others mentioned. Trying him as a key back might work as suggested e.g. the Tarrant brothers,  Liam Jones, Darcy Moore. If he successfully trains as a key utility then he could get a few games that way as we aren't always going to be injury free like this year

I have no idea. The issue with Weideman is that it's obvious he takes things to heart pretty easily and that head just drops when he makes a mistake. When he does that it affects his game and that's him gone for the day

I think it's definitely a psychological thing. I'm sure he sees a sports psychologist but maybe he needs Goody just to give him some clarity and tell him they'll back him in over the summer and Mark Williams takes him under his wing and just install some much needed confidence. 

Assuming Tomlinson slots back in once fit next season, does Petty go forward..?

and, if so, how would he rate compared to Sam?

There is a bald bloke with a beard playing for us, who played 39 games in his first 5 years on the list and kicked 18 goals, while often played forward. Yes he had injuries, as did Weid. 

I am not comparing the two, only that sometimes careers turn around after poor starts.

I would move Weid on if we had a better replacement, but we don't and we have no ruck back up either, after the current two.

So unless there is a great deal to be done, that gets us a better player and a ruck backup as well, he stays another year.

The world doesn't stop turning just because we're in the granny SONS. Other clubs are trade strategising now and so should we.

You'd train Petty on Lever too in the offseason, a defensive forward that could specialise in negating the influence of an intercept defender.

Weiderman is the future. When we succeed as a premiership team he will want to stay to be a part of future premiership teams.

It's entirely possible that Weid has the confidence yips. He might never get it back. It's a long slow road even if he does.

Sending him back ... why not pick up a bloke whom we already know can play back.

Persist with him forward ... why not develop a youngster who can take a one-grab mark.

There's an opportunity cost in keeping him on the list and hoping. He's gone backwards and it might be best for MFC and Weid to send him to a new environment.

B: LEVER, MAY, TOMLINSON

HB: BOWEY, PETTY, SALEM

IC: RIVERS

Tomlinson isn't exactly and aggressive backman like May or Lever he's more like Smith and Hibberd and I think he's an upgrade on both. Don't discount Tommy he's in for a big game this week.

I can't have any talk of Petty forward. He's done it alright in an emergency, but the way he's playing now he could be May 2.0 by the time the original retires. Weid certainly won't be, and as much as I like him and would be happy to keep him, he should 100% go somewhere where he can play regularly.
