ding 5,126 Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 Made contact with an umpire in a way that can only have been deliberate. Bit rhetorical this question as we know "stars" rarely get cited in finals. If it was round 1 you can bet he would be done for that. Thoughts? GWS star Toby Greene makes contact with umpire Matt Stevic during heated discussion 2 Quote
The Chief 697 Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 Absolutely, no excuse for shouldering an ump at a quarter break. shame because he would have caused problems for Cats. 3 Quote
Deestar9 1,860 Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 Cannot possibly get off with umpire contact plus verbal abuse. Umpires are sacrosanct!! Quote
TheoX 1,222 Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 Deliberate and aggressive. Must get weeks for that. Should probably get something for the throat punch too. 1 1 Quote
leave it to deever 17,621 Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 A fine. Its toby g and finals times.🤨 Quote
Ethan Tremblay 31,389 Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 (edited) Martin received a fine in 2018 for something similar, it was deemed ‘careless’. Ed Curnow received a one match ban in the same year for making contact with an umpire. Different rules for different players. Greene’s is one of the most intentional I’ve seen, it should be a suspension but fully expect him to be fined. Edited August 28, 2021 by Ethan Trembley 2 Quote
whatwhat say what 23,880 Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 should be minimum 2 weeks diesel got 9 for a similar sort of action all those many moons ago 3 Quote
FireInTheBennelly 4,104 Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 He's a protected species, but surely enough is enough. How's 'the look' for the game if umpires can be approached like that. Should get weeks. 5 Quote
1964_2 2,357 Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 Definite weeks. Given his past, it’s hard to understand what he was thinking to go anywhere near an umpire. Quote
dl4e 5,851 Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 Well if the AFL would prefer Geelong to win then they will suspend him. If not it will be a fine. 1 Quote
Queanbeyan Demon 7,053 Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 Had they lost, two weeks. They won, so a fine. 4 Quote
Demon Dynasty 17,169 Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 At least 1 week as per the Tomahawk slap a few years ago and that was alot less contact than Mr Toby's... https://thewest.com.au/sport/geelong-cats/tom-hawkins-ban-sends-message-on-umpire-contact-ng-b88830041z 1 Quote

A free for the throat fend when he had a free kick and a player was charging him is fine. A heavy fine or a week for the umpire contact is appropriate too, because the action was not. 1 Quote
FireInTheBennelly 4,104 Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 Watch the 2 giants walking behind him. Both walk out of their way to go around the umpire. Players know the rules. He blew it, even leaned into the umpire. Gone. 4 Quote
Graeme Yeats' Mullet 6,800 Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 Can't understand how that won't be 4 weeks plus Deliberate, clear cut, forceful enough and exactly what the AFL should be making example of 7 Quote

Redleg 42,182 Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 TBH Stevic had a strange look and continued to discuss something and it didn't look like a report on the spot. I get the feeling Stevic doesn't want to report him and from the angle we saw, you don't actually see contact. If Stevic says he was only lightly brushed and he wasn't concerned, it will be a fine. Otherwise everyone will be at the Tribunal and possibly Court all week. I think Toby will cop a fine and that will end it. Very stupid action and in a final with more to come. 2 1 Quote
Axis of Bob 11,945 Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 Deliberately knocked into an umpire. He looked at him, he thought about it, he walked through him. Every footballer, umpire and kid will see that this week and the AFL needs to send a message that you absolutely cannot do this. Ever. I'd give him 6 weeks. 17 Quote
Jaded No More 68,976 Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 He is a disgrace. That was aggressive. Nothing polite or respectful about it. Needs to be suspended. Won’t because AFL needs GWS to be successful. 6 Quote

Diamond_Jim 12,778 Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 The vision on the AFL site looks damning. He walked towards him... made no attempt to avoid him and then deliberately shouldered him out of the way The impact may have been slight but the action and the intent was clear. I love Toby as a player but tis was one step too far in our game. 2 Quote
Demon Disciple 12,538 Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 Wow just about shoulder charged the umpire. Accident or not (definitely was not an accident), he needs to get weeks for that. Such a bad look. 3 Quote
maximum bob 462 Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 In the past that would have earned a justified 4 to 6 week holiday. Intentional physical contact with an umpire. If that prat gets off lightly I'll go heave. 2 Quote
