not really. we never had the assets to get him. carlscum was his only logical choice.

forget what he says. he's carlscum now so what do you expect him to say?

agree about where is carlscum getting the money from with all their high priced buys. they will have cap problems before long.

and finally, we don't need cerra and certainly not for a big wage. at his age he's just not that good enough to command that sort of money now. but good luck to him.....he's going to need it being at the basket case carlscum.

I have mentioned this before, but I expect Carlton to start rising reasonably quickly.

They have a lot of very good players in their core group and if Vossy can get a few of the suspect ones to give a little more consistent effort, sky is the limit

Unfortunately when you have a team of champions they have to play as a team not individuals so players who are playing for survival often are the ones who forget about team first and play as individuals.

I hate to say this but I believe players who are under pressure because they are well paid or on the team fringes like Williams Petrevski-Seton Saad Cripps Martin Betts and Casboult where playing for survival not for the team and Carlton suffered because of it.

It is now upto Voss to change all that and get it right otherwise they will be in the same boat in 12 months time.

What they have now is their finished product. I’d have went about it differently. But history will be the judge. Personally I think Carlton have overpaid b-grade level players who were at their top prior to trading for them (Saad and Williams). Cerra isn’t a dominant impactful player, he is more of a “nice” player. Hewitt is a good pick up, but he is what he was at Sydney - midfield depth. I just feel they’ve overpaid complementary players, and paid them like they are bonafied stars.

Thought about this today, and bias aside Cerra has made an incredibly poor decision or lacks the ultimate drive for career success.

Perhaps Carlton offered more, regardless they are a club in tatters. If I were him, I'd be very concerned about my development and long-term future there if ultimate grand final success was a factor in my decision. If this is not the case and cash were the ultimate driver then we haven't missed out on too much. Maybe he was just convinced by a better sales pitch. Who knows. Poor decision regardless.

Funny you mention that. Recently I was offered a lucrative contract, ~salary increase of ~35%, by a competing company. Without a doubt I ummed and arrhhed. I had ZOOM meetings with key figures in the USA and Germany along with the local GM. They seemed like a nice bunch of people to work with. However, this week I formally rejected the offer despite my current employer being unable to match it (they did provide some additional incentive but it was far far less lucrative).

In the end I chose to stay for several reasons. My current employer is far bigger with many more long-term career pathways. I also consider the products and services we sell to be some of the best in the market, so they better suit my values when working with customers and clients. In the end I figured I'd be happier with my current company and colleagues as opposed to going to a smaller name in the market with few career options and products not as well established. Call my stupid for turning down such an offer but I'm pleased with my decision.

On the note of Cerra, he was coming home regardless. I feel at the Dees he had guaranteed development, culture, and success in front of him. He opted to go for the larger salary and unsupported promises. I question if he has the ultimate drive to win a premiership or if he's merely looking to stretch out his high-paying career for as long as possible.

Good call.

Kane Cornes raised this issue yesterday.  Cerra and Hewitt can't simply go to thr Blues and be  nice players doing a role. They must become bona fide stars fro what they are on and what the Blues have given up.

. I think he referenced some melb players in comparison, Trac and another, but I may be wrong. I have never seen so many A-graders in the one Dees team as we have now. Its incredible to contemplate 2022.

He opted for what he could get and the team he could get to for acceptable money and coming home.

Dees were never ever a chance. A deal is 2-way and we had nothing to offer.  Everyone's happy at Demonland (to quote Luke Dunstan and to watch the premiership celebrations)

But Cerra will always think what might have been I guess. Good luck to him though.

That is a very good question. Given their recent high priced acquisitions and their already highly paid players, it is difficult to understand how they are fitting in so many more not cheaply paid player.

Maybe a lot of new employees/consultants at Visy, who are related to Carlton players.

To be fair Carlton are much like Melbourne a few years back when Hibberd and Melksham joined, then Lever and May.

FWIW I thought he worded it pretty well. Pushed up his new club, showed respect to ours.

Also, I doubt it was a monetary issue. A few weeks ago Fox Footy's Tom Morris (if you give him any cred) said that we could afford Cerra in our salary cap as we'd made provision when we were pursuing the interest of Zac Merrett. I guess a chunk of that cash will go to Jacko now which is no bad thing

Way way too harsh. By all reports Carlton are not offering him crazy money, if he wanted money he would’ve stayed at Freo.

By far and away the biggest factor in Cerra not picking us would’ve been the ability to do the trade, and I respect a player who says don’t screw my old club or tear apart my new club to get me.

If Peter Bell got on his high horse there’s a chance Cerra could’ve been dumped in the pre season draft. Or almost bullied in to going to Carlton. Trading away premiership players would’ve hurt us too. It would’ve taken a whole lot of drama to get anywhere near a deal that Freo would’ve accepted.

Did Steve May really pick us in 2018 when half the Victorian clubs wanted him? I’m not 100% sure we were his first preference. We were the team that could do the deal whilst everyone else said wait until free agency. After a rocky start he’s been fantastic and a great clubman.

i can just see this years trade as Saad and Williams v2. The issue has never been with the talent they have on the list. The situation is comparable to an amateur golfer buying the new sexy driver at $1K thinking it will make them a scratch golfer. 

Carlton's problem is gameplan, plain and simple. Maybe Vossy will make a difference, but i think they will endure a lot more pain in the short term (like we did when Roos came on board) before they really really commit. its not like a light switch that you can just switch on and say im going to be selfless or a defensive gameplan is just going to work. These changes will take years and i wouldnt be surprised if Carlton go backwards a bit before they improve. 

Im not phased that Cerra went to Carlton tbh. Im actually stoked that we got Dunstan. He is a clearance specialist, which will work really nice with our new found weapon in scores from clearances.

I'd hope some Melbourne players might take a pay cut if it means keeping the group together as they develop and focussed on premierships. Hawthorn did it.

As for Cerra, nobody knows what Carlton will achieve in the next 3-4 years. I think they could improve, and Cerra could find himself in a good place.

But there's plenty of sneering prognostications being thrown around in this thread that might come back to bite some posters. (Bit like the Goodwin thread from 3 years ago.)
