Not sure if there is a Separate Rising Star 2022 thread, sorry if there is.

I was looking at the stats of some of the Rising Star players so far this season, and then out of interest went to see what the odds were on sportsbet were for the 7 nominees so far.

  • Daicos ($1.90)
  • Horne-Francis ($4)
  • Nic Martin ($6)
  • Rachele ($9)
  • Newcombe ($12)
  • Ginnivan ($15)
  • Bowey ($15)

Not meaning to take the topic into gambling, or advocating anyone places a bet, just thought he'd be better placed. Not sure if my MFC bias is pumping him up too much? Are the others more favored as they play "sexy positions'?

Daicos is favourite mainly because his name is Daicos - simple as that

And he plays for Collingwood. Betting odds also reflect the bookmakers' liability. Hence, because Daicos is a Collingwood player, the bookies will be holding a lot of money from Collingwood supporters, because there are just so many of them.

It comes down to the opinion of the 'judges' so the players' status, club, name recognition, playing style and media profile all feature in the decision being made.  Bowey is a tough, yet skillful small defender who would sits behind a huge list of Melbourne players that the media would want to talk about before him.

I'd think he'd pick up some 'safe' 1 and 2 votes and finish top 5.

(Then win another flag)

Spot on

I can't really see him winning the rising star from some young gun midfielders, but i think if the MFC got to pick from that list we'd probably take Bowey..

He's the type of kid that just plays his role really well for 250-300 games and probably doesn't really get the accolades he deserves until towards the end of his career.

Still a long way to go, but it would take a miracle for Daicos to lose as he plays in a really friendly position. Bowey somewhat the same, but he has to defend.

one injury and it’s wide open. Bowey will have the stats to go with him, and as posters have said - get a heap of 3, 2 and 1 votes. I’d love him to end up with a podium finish.

If Bowey

was placed in the centre and played a Sam Mitchell type game he would challenge the best no doubt. Only debit on Sam is I can't remember him ever kicking left foot yet.!

I am hdppy him playing where it's best fit our team as he has  never let us down yet .

David King was asked a few weeks back about Bowey possibly win the Rising Star.  His response  "can a half back flanker win it?"  This backs up your point.

Bowey is already a very good and consistent player in a great team. I agree with others here that I would choose him above all other Rising Stars to be in the Melbourne side right now. The fear is judges will see the others best highlights package and think that happens every game. It doesn't.

Bowey plays like a 10 year player, full of poise and class, week in week out.

He is an important cog in a Premiership team, not a sparodic, flashy player in a middle to bottom side.

I know what I value most.

There's some very good talent in there ahead of Bowey, though I'd rate him higher than the meeting odds place him. Horne-Francis is over-rated based on draft pick thus far compared to output of others there. Daicos and Martin in particular have been next level good and a clear level above the rest of the pack. I'd rate Bowey after them in 3rd spot. Very strong crop this year though. All those players there have had a big impact at their clubs and on games, Ginnivan has been a match winner on the big stage too.

Absurd comment. He's averaging 25 disposals a game to start his career and has already had some BOG games. He's probably having the best debut season from any midfielder in my lifetime. Others up there are Buckley, Selwood, Judd, Oliver (more his second season due to now abolished sub rule), and statistically he's well ahead of them all. He obviously gets more attention due to his family name, but take the blinkers off and acknowledge his output. He's having an incredible debut season and looks set to become an elite midfielder of the competition for many years to come. Barring injury, he will rightly win the Rising Star award no contest.

I would give Horne-Francis bonus points by the way he flew the flag for his team last week.

Didn't flinch.  Great leadership, character and tenacity.

Hopefully the award is assessed beyond stats and flair.

I reckon the Rising Star is an award the AFL have created to maintain hope for crap teams with high draft picks.

That's why Jacko's win last year was all the more extraordinary. I put his win down to some highly visually spectacular acts (strong contested pack marks, goal assists from picking the ball up below his knees etc). Poor Bowser is an equally worthy recipient but won't win for general excellence alone.

Bowey is over-the-odds but the problem with him winning is the  criteria used for this award. OK, you have to be nominated as a weekly winner during the season which he has been already (and you can't be nominated more than once so that means there will be a pool of 23). I don't know the process employed each week but I'm sure that the whole panel doesn't watch every game played for that week. Regardless, it's just a panel of 'experts' that choose on a 5, 4, 3 , 2, 1 basis for the whole season. It's not done on a cumulative  basis each week so it will be hugely influenced by media coverage, rather than an objective appraisal of the rising star across 22 games. If it was like the Brownlow you would assume Ginnivan has taken a lot of votes off Daicos already this season, giving a lot more chance to Horne-Francis for instance, but it won't work like that. Following is a list of the experts used last year. Do former players really have any special expertise?

Yep I’ve got a whole 4 bucks on him at 15/1

Not holding my breath but believe he deserves it

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.
