Seriously if the AFL put a team in Western Sydney and the Gold Coast then Tasmania can easily have its team.

Channel Seven reported on Thursday night that the Carter report did not recommend a start-up 19th team, saying there was no business case for expansion because it wouldn’t add television dollars, and that it would require relocation or a club deal to play home games in Tasmania.

North Melbourne and Hawthorn can merge to become the North Tasmanian Hawks.

Gold Coast and their hideous jumper can fold and talent divided amongst the remaining clubs (we get dibs on King).

Back to a 16 team competition and everyone is happy. 

Covid will give the AFL an excuse to push the can down the road. 

The sentimental part of me thinks Tassie deserves a team but on the other hand it'll statistically make it harder for the Dees to win a flag (especially since surely they'd introduce a 20th team down the track after Tassie so they can bring in tv dollars from the extra match)

North should move to Tasmania they have nothing.

Just send Gold Coast there. They dont have any supporters and the freezing cold might wake them up.

I think Tassie should have a team.  But when I talk to Tassie people they seem very divided eg ppl in Launceston would not support a Hobart team and Hobart people wouldn't support a Launceston team.  The obvious solution is to play games at both but some say that satisfies neither.

Unless they are able to get on the same page, I can't see the tassie team working for a while yet.

Tassie devils could be fun! TBH an AFL expansion only signals to me that NRL can GAGF! Any increase in AFL exposure is a win for me. They probably need a team of their own, just hope they can support and sustain one

Yep the AFL is a business, it doesn't run on sentiment alone. There is no money in Tasmania, relative to SE QLD. 

 

Great, another team to dilute the talent pool and languish near the bottom in perpetuity. Just what the AFL needs

Well they can't eat their cake and still have it. They either want a team, or they want to sabotage "their" team before it even starts.

If they can't sort out this parochiality ... "big in Biddleonia" comes to mind ... then too bad. National competition trumps backyard turf wars.

I think their pedigree in Aussie Rules means they deserve a team, but only if another club (apart from MFC of course!) relocates, and only if they don't spoil their party with their dung flinging.

That commercial motivations have been put ahead of the game’s legacy is, for mine, unacceptable, and the AFL as an organisation is responsible. If the state itself can’t bankroll a team, then this multi-billion dollar behemoth should, simply out of a duty to the game’s future down there. That they’ve done so with GWS and GCS sets the all too obvious precedent, as do financial splashes like the multi millions spent on upgrading GMHBA. We have no game without we protect its roots, and Tassie footy is currently dying, year by year. I couldn’t care less whether it’s a relocation, or about spurious Hobart-Launceston divisions. The whole state would go nutty for their own team, and of course games would be shared between Launceston and Hobart. The AFL needs to be the game’s true benefactor that we want it to be, and get it done.

I agree that it should get done, but the current mob in charge won't do it unless there is competition down there. If the A League or NRL think about expanding down there, the AFL will swoop in. But currently they don't have any alternative so football in still no. 1.

 

I would have thought that Covid was the perfect time to relocate a team. If the State Government is willing to chip in a higher than usual proportion of money, covid is easy cover for claiming "there isn't enough money to support 10 teams in Vic any more". 

I just don't know if Gil is up for that culture war.

Ten point plan:

1. Tassie secedes from Australia, renamed 'Democratic People's Republic of Devil's Island',
2. Creates it's own currency (The Devil's dollar) and prints money,
3. New 30,000 seat Optus like stadium built with the new currency,
4. Offers Deez big money to be co-located in both Melbourne and to the new nation's capital, Devonport,
5. Deez agree, 11 games in Melbourne and 11 in Devo, with 50 year free travel and accommodation between Melbourne and the DPRDI for current Dee members,
6. Poach Luke Beverage as coach (Bevo to Devo has a nice marketing ring to it),
7. New team known as the Devil's Demons,
8. A 50 year moratorium on salary cap breaches granted to new entity,
9. AFL renamed Pacific International Super Optimist Football League,
10. Eddie, Dean Margetts, Razor Ray, Matthew Nicholls, Malthouse and Tex Walker intercepted at border and placed in Bernie detention centre for undetermined period of time.

I can see North playing 6-8 home games in Tassie, with the same amount of away games guarantee for Melbourne.  Lets say 8 games in Tassie, means 3 home games in Vic plus 8 away games total of 11 games in Vic.  This is the type of incentive they will need to offer to get a team to initially play more games in Tassie.  If you are North you would take this means your Vic members still get 11 games and Tassie gets 8 games a season.

Yep, and that’s of course a commercially driven decision, rather than a longer vision for the game. I’m not concerned about diluting the talent pool either, so I wouldn’t force a relocation, as much as you’re spot on about Covid offering cover for the idea. Improving the ‘pathway’ in Tassie would create its own solution to talent pool diminution, not to mention Australia’s growing population (COVID notwithstanding).

Everything that Gill stated in the report findings are the three options everybody already knew about. So sending Norf up to tassie is still the AFL's preffered option, what a waste of a report and people's time.

It is totally fair of them (as a part of Australia) to feel like they should have a team in the Australian Football League, strangely I think the AFL have done more damage to their brand by having a team on the Gold Coast rather than promoting it. It's not so much their fault as they have done literally everything they could to make them successful but that place is where sports teams go to die. They can continue to have access to all the best kids for decades but the club has no soul and no pride in itself, so when someone says "play for the jumper" it means absolutely nothing to them.

That said, in poker terms, they are pot committed and have no choice but to push forward with them. So the talk of relocating GC to Tassie is not going to happen. The talk of the Kangas shifting to Tassie is equally unlikely, despite the pit they are in there is enough power to stop it from happening. If they weren't going to take the incredible deal the the AFL offered them to go to GC (mistake IMO they turned that down) then I can't see them taking a deal that would take them to Tasmania.

For me the only viable option to get Tasmania a team is to create a 20th team at the same time to get an additional match for TV rights. Eddie Everywhere put forward the idea of a NT team, that would seem logical and would boost tourism to Darwin and Alice Springs but I also would be concerned that there would be low interest in players playing there (same with Tasmania).

And then once Tassie members hold a majority they will just vote to fully relocate the team to Tassie. Whyw ould you do that if you're North?

To be honest I think North are in a better financial situation than the Saints these days, don't know why they're always the first one to be named for relocation.

Tassie becomes 19th team - then a 20th team from NT (split games between Darwin/Alice/Cairns).
