I think there are parallels that can be drawn into in both the Hawks and Norf games.

Both lowly ranked teams in which our out put(2nd gear) and performance were down from previous high level performances.

In both cases i think we have been thinking about the following weeks offering, Hawks followed by the Tiges and Norf followed by the Swans.

The outcomes were almost identical as both teams were blown away in the 4th quarter when the game was needed to be won with 10 minutes of damaging footy.

We can't expect arousal levels are to going to be at 100% every week against the battlers, the main objective is to be banking wins against the lesser likes and avoiding injuries and suspensions.

Expending the energy that is needed against the high quality teams is all part of the game management that is required to get to the end of season with petrol left in the tank.

Where we can launch into September with a health and hungry list that is not limping in with no energy reserves.

Don't get caught up on the performances against the lesser likes, be happy to bank the wins and look forward to the games that matter.

Give em hell this week Dees.

I understand the calls to move Gus into the guts to take over Viney’s role but I think people underestimate how important Gus has been in the wing role this year. He’s been playing a bit of a sacrificial team role (something I’ve heard Goody say about a number of players) and this has allowed Langdon to continue his upward trajectory.

I’m picturing Harmes will come in for Jones (keep him as medical sub) to take on the Viney HF pressure/mid role, Sparrow will come in for Baker, and Petty in for Tommo.

I can see how it might makes sense to some to send Tom to the wing role, and Gus into the guts, but both have taken ownership of the roles they’ve played so far this year. I’m very loathed to change much of our winning formula.

With Petty a confirmed in, I can only see one other change happening and that will be Sparrow or Harmes for Viney. I don’t see Goodwin making any unforced changes this week.

I think it's a mistake. Weideman needs to play now. Sparrow in for Baker IMO.

Amazing that both of these blokes have signed on along with Salem and Max...no stuffing around...be sure of one thing - they absolutely believe!

Disagree. Number 32 was, in my view, best on ground by a mile.

Weed was good and worked hard. But he benefited from a woeful defence and the ball coming in under no pressure.

Missed some gettable shots.

And frustratingly applied little forward half pressure and I can't recall him laying a tackle.

Sparrow was BOG by the length of the Flemington straight. I’ve doubted his ability to make it before but what I saw in that game made me believe he has all the tools to be a Midfield regular at AFL level...he was excellent! Not only was he hard at it and great at the contested ball but his evasiveness and foot skills were very good. He comes in before Harmes IMO

Ok I'll bite, why is Brayshaw back to the wing? Is Viney back in next week?

brayshaw was moved out of wing last game only because none of the 3 emergencies were logical replacements for viney and one of the emergencies was a winger (baker) and so brayshaw became a mid.

brayshaw has settled in well to the wing all this year and is a better winger than baker, so he goes back to wing.

this week we have the whole list to chose from for a viney replacement. sparrow was bog in 2nds so is logical replacement. harmes would also be a choice but has only had 1 game back from injury

Ok, sound argument to a point. The problem I have is associated with equating form Vs a Nth Melb 2nd team.

Your argument appears to be; Sparrow is a better inside mid than Brayshaw based on performance against the Nth Melb 2nds. I'm not convinced. Therefore on what I observed of Baker vs Nth Melbourne (first selections) it is a sum thing. Put another way; Brayshaw Mid plus Baker Wing vs Nth Melb ones is not the same as Brayshaw Wing Vs Nth Melb ones and Sparrow Mid vs Nth Melb twos. Too me it's like one combo gives you 8 out of 10 and the other gives 7 out of 10.

Perhaps I'm not being clear enough. I'll try another way. Is Sparrow a better inside mid than Brayshaw? Is Sparrow a better wing than Baker?

Harmes needs game time and will play a full game in vfl of afl ... hope it's afl playing more of a defensive mid ,,,, Bradshaw to keep building craft on the wing

Still struggling with the lack of love for Baker. Have watched the replay twice now and don't see the negativity. I would think his effort in the last qtr; 1 vs 2, makes the coaching team give him a big tick. On re-watching, his disposal was nowhere near as bad as some are saying.

He wasn’t bad, he just wasn’t good and there is better in form and position. His defensive running and positioning is average, his tackles rarely stick, his decision in making is a touch slow and his kicks lack impact. He is an average player who can play a role on occasion when injuries strike but I think what you see now is what you’ll get. We are no longer an average side.

I'm guessing the round 1 - 7 is based on 2020 ladder position of the opp, maybe the 2021 ladder position of opp  and possibly travel.  Looking at us and Bulldogs I just can't see 18th and 14th given the minimal travel and the very few top teams the bulldogs have played.

I can see how we would have the hardest fixture going forward as we play Port,  Bulldogs twice, Eagles at Optus, Cats again, Lions (all 2020 finalists) and we have lots of interstate travel.

But who knows.  Could well be HS don't know how it was compiled...

Would have a bot to do with ladder position so far this year I suppose.  But only 7 rounds in, the losses against us for the teams who've played us will go some way to explaining their lower than normal ladder position.  Freo would be knocking on the door of the top four if they'd beaten us.  Saints and GWS would be top 8 if they'd beaten us, cats and Tigers would be top 4 if they'd beaten us.  I'm taking this with a huge grain of salt..

i didn't say sparrow is a better inside mid than brayshaw

i said brayshaw has played wing all season except last week (special case) and has been a success there, so we should stick to a structure that we know has worked. we also have more mid options than wingers.

That makes a little sense. But yeah, defs needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

Petty will be fine.

Remember he will have May and Lever in support this time whereas for the Hawks game there was no May. He’s a promising player and deserves his chance. He’s on the list because the club rate him and believe he has a long-term future. His opportunity has arrived so hoping he can grab it with both hands.

Edited by Better days ahead

My team for Saturday.

B:         Hunt              May                Lever

HB:      Salem           Petty               Hibberd

C:        Langdon       Oliver              Brayshaw

HF:      Pickett          McDonald      Melksham

F:         Spargo          Brown            Fritsch

R:        Gawn             Petracca         Jordon

Int:      Rivers            Jackson          Sparrow

Neal-Bullen

Medical sub: Jones

Ins: Petty & Sparrow

Out: Tomlinson & Baker

I think we have to keep rewarding the side that has got us to 7-0, assuming they are all good to go and no one needs to be managed.

Baker should only be played if replacing Brayshaw or Langdon as he is a natural winger.

Sparrow is the obvious replacement for Viney's role until he is back and same for Petty with Tommo.

Dislike the love for Harmes. Before he got injured he was hardly setting the world on fire..  He plays one game in a non competitive VFL match and posters want him in?

If anyone watched, compare the games of Sparrow vs Harmes. Sparrow's was a much more well rounded game. Harmesy just doesn't do the basics well enough atm and for that, he shouldn't be rewarded.

I'd bring Sparrow in for Viney. Get Brayshaw back on a wing.

Thomo and Baker come out for Petty and Sparrow.

Give Brown another week to see how he goes on the G. Something to note was the delivery going inside 50 last week. It was awful for the most part which clearly didnt help Brown. I love Trac like the footballing world, but one thing he definitely needs to improve is his delivery inside 50. At his best, his execution and delivery is top shelf. But he regularly overkicks the ball going forward under little pressure. Needs to become more consistently damaging kicking the ball inside 50. Would be the comps best player if he manages that.

So are the teams for every game being announced tonight like the good old days or is that not confirmed?

I believe that comes back next week.

Would’ve been just so hard to submit teams on 4 days notice this week. I can’t imagine the high level intelligence and technologies needed to complete that impossible task.

Stunned we are brining in Petty. He was awful vs the Hawks. Every time the ball went to him in a contest he looked all at sea.

Sydney’s plan will be, kick it to who ever is on Petty. Tmac back and Weid up front should be the go.

Oh and Harmes in for Baker, Harmes plays Viney role, Brayshaw back to the wing.

I know that this is a default question  and I ask with due respect but were you at the game or did you watch on TV?  He was poor in the first half but really blossomed in the second which considering it was his first game in over a season made sense.  I rate him and am curious to know if his work did not show up on the TV

Agree with this although now that BB is back in he will need to fully implode to be dropped.  The guy is the great white hope and I am not sure the match committee will drop him any time soon as he has too much proven upside.

Am I wrong in wanting Pickett to have a break and be managed in the true sense of the word.

He is slight and he's coming under increasing heat each week. Might be prudent  to let him have the odd week off to keep him cherry ripe !!

I think your alone there, although he does seem to have a few more bandages every week so something will probably catch up with him eventually and give him a week off anyway

Regardless of whether it’s a good idea or not, this ain’t the week to do it.

For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

  • CASEY: UWS Giants

The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.
